World Sees Obama as Incompetent and Amateur

The president is well-intentioned but can't walk the walk on the world stage

By Mortimer B. Zuckerman
Posted June 18, 2010

President Obama came into office as the heir to a great foreign policy legacy enjoyed by every recent U.S. president. Why? Because the United States stands on top of the power ladder, not necessarily as the dominant power, but certainly as the leading one. As such we are the sole nation capable of exercising global leadership on a whole range of international issues from security, trade, and climate to counterterrorism. We also benefit from the fact that most countries distrust the United States far less than they distrust one another, so we uniquely have the power to build coalitions. As a result, most of the world still looks to Washington for help in their region and protection against potential regional threats.

Yet, the Iraq war lingers; Afghanistan continues to be immersed in an endless cycle of tribalism, corruption, and Islamist resurgence; Guantánamo remains open; Iran sees how North Korea toys with Obama and continues its programs to develop nuclear weapons and missiles; Cuba spurns America's offers of a greater opening; and the Palestinians and Israelis find that it is U.S. policy positions that defer serious negotiations, the direct opposite of what the Obama administration hoped for.

Fantastic article. It is amazing to me that people still cheer for this guy. How they can not see the disaster that is Obama is beyond me. His presidency will go down as the worst in U.S history. You can take that to the bank...........But hurry. I'm not sure we'll have banks at the rate we are going....

I think Obama remains liked outside the US. At the very least, he's seen as someone struggling to clean up a big pile of poo. And he's not george w, so that kind of counts with....just about everyone.

Obama is generally seen in a positive light here in the UK. Always interesting to hear a thoroughly partisan
right-wing perspective though.

"The economy is ON FIRE!"

Yup, if you want to know what's going to happen, just ask a right-winger. Then you'll know that the exact opposite is what's REALLY going to happen. :)

Agreed. It is a shame to me that our first Black President has brought the underlying and often subconscious racism still existing in our country to the fore so forcefully. I know our RWAs will argue until they're blue in the face that there's no racism involved, but fear of the "other" is strong in this country...just look at the furor over Kennedy as a Catholic so recently in our past.

It's not even conscious on many of their parts, they just feel the fear and attribute everything negative to him. I've given up defending him to others; to me he's another Jimmy Carter thus far; well-intentioned but ineffective. We've had plenty of those, the fact he's Black has nothing to do with it. Unfortunately, far too many can't just see him as a President with good and bad traits, whether consciously or subconsciously, he's something to be feared.

I think there are FAR fewer of us out here who see him as any kind of "savior", it seems to me even the most die-hard supporters have seen enough to be disillusioned. But anti-christ still persists, and sadly probably always will. I'm ashamed of my fellow countrymen in that respect.

Actually, the Obama = Reagan thing is pretty close, except that it was well into Reagan's third year in office, so surely his economic policies must have taken hold by then! And he had peak unemployment higher than 10%.

Of course, Rappy will insist that that was all Carter's fault, but somehow THIS mess we're in today ISN'T Bush's fault, in any way.

So in reality, Obama > Reagan.

Well, I suppose I'm not left-wing enough, either, because I never bought into the whole "savior" and "messiah" thing. Maybe I'm a libertarian after all (but if so I lean that way from the left, not from the right); silly me, I always figured every man was his own savior, and that government, at its best, should be there to lend a hand and give a boost, or provide a bit of a safety net.

We're not talking about the stock market. Or Iraq, Afghanistan, North Korea, the Middle East, Iran, U.S. standing in the world, healthcare costs or the economy in general - any of the things that happened to get worse while Bush was in charge, no, we're talking about nailing Obama with just one measure of performance(and this one turns out to be a silver bullet, unlike all the others): 10% > 5.4%

And nobody should mention that unemployment is a lagging economic indicator.

1) Obama said his favorite president was Reagan, and he wanted to be just like him, I think he was telling the truth, and he's not regain yet but in some way he is. I'm not one to revere Reagan, but its better than what we usually have, or have been having lately.

2) numbers are irrelevant, since the president is t really in charge of the world markets, and they tend to be rolling on data from years ago. Think about it, a guy elected in 2008 takes office in 2009. And in 2009 they right the 2010 budget. In 2010 budget is spent by the end of 2010 so by 2011 companies who feed off of the public till have posted those as earnings, which means in 2012 they can start hiring people and spending money on growth... So if obamas policies totally rule, Sarah Palin can take the credit. But seriously, I don't think presidents have a lot of effect on economic figures.

3) Mince just made a very good point. Not only is this administration more similar to the last on than any admin. Of the 20th c. But psychologically, this never works. "go out with me, I'm not your last bf. Nah, doesn't work, you have to be positive about yourself, not negative about someone else.

4) phooey there were other points.

5) niki, sig, funny how you think this is the right. I saw a lot of racism during the campaign, and it was all coming from fellow dems against Obama. Not saying there isn't any in fox news comment boards, just saying it's all over the place.. Now when I see it, it's bipartisan, usually against muslims and Latinos, az aside, but also, I see a fair amount surrounding Michael Steele, who strikes me as competent and sharp. So yeah, it's a problem, but it's not a partisan problem. Just cause you don't like ti doesn't automatically mean we like it, or that we own it. Surely, there are more white people in the GOP

Mike, bush was Clinton when the market crashed. Follow the delays, the market did pretty good under bush, not that i credit him with it.

That people could hold Bush the Lesser (or Bush the Elder, for that matter) in esteem never fails to boggle my fragile little mind. Nonetheless, Obama is in charge now. Reminding everyone that the previous president sucked, as a sort of obligatory intro to everything, does nothing to establish Obama's identity or administration as anything other than the-not-Bush. Thats not enough.

JONGSSTRAW

Funny how when a state like Iowa that is 98% White chose Obama over Hillary during their Primary, or when America chose Obama over McCain for the election, the Leftist Media promulgated, and general concensus was that America had finally transcended race, Americans had evolved from the dark evils of our past, and that Americans simply chose the better man.

But now that Obama has done nothing but fuck up everything, plunged American into the depths of generational debt, and championed vastly un-popular positions that go against the will of the American people like Govt. Healthcare, civilian trials for terrorists, etc. now that America sees him as the radical ideologue that he is.....well now we're just all a bunch of racists for not going along! Racists who elected a Black man to be President? Man, that dog don't hunt. It's the last, most pathetic, and blatantly RACIST excuse possible for these Obama defenders to use. They're the real racists, not people who think Obama is a fucking retard and screw-up. My only hope is that in a few months the disasterous legacy of Obama-Reid-Pelosi will be wiped away from the memory of mankind. I'm not ready to say that Republican Congressional leadership will be much better, but at least the Obama beast will be caged up for 2 years. Maybe we can get back to fiscal responsibility which was lost under the George Bush era when Repubs in Congress forgot all the lessons it had taken them 40 years to learn. And Bush just went along with their unfunded spending sprees. Bush and Rove's actions GAVE us Obama. That is their legacy, and they will have to live with that the rest of their lives. Rove knows it, and has openly said the same many times. I hope Americans have grown up a bit since 2008, when their childish naivete and emotional exhuberance elected the Chicago thug and grossly inexperienced Obama. There is still no Republican out there that I can see as a serious challenger to Obama in 2012. But that's ok, I just want the Dems in Congress neutralized first, then we can find us a candy date for Prez.

ANTIMASON

president Obama is incompetent, and will, through the prizm of human history, be seen as a failure, because even the most competent of socialists are failures. it's an eternally flawed ideology counter-intuitive to human naturea and counter-productive to realhuman progress.

most of the latter day AMerican presidents were ideological 'progressives'- save probably Reagan, Kennedy, Ike to a lesser extent.. and especially Coolidge and Harding. the rest were Keynsian, central planning, collectivists- who had no faith in individual liberty and self determination.

America will only be great, when it endorses those principles again that we once held so dear, of true human liberty and freedom. look at Europe! if soialism had any hope of working, surely the brilliance of Americas ancestors would have figured it out. and yet the EU is a complete tyranny! plead to me otherwise?

Obama wants something that is counter-intuitive to human nature. only i can control my destiny- period. once you give government the authority to lay claim over your life, you lose your basic human liberty of self ownership. we are setting ourselves up for a massive, centralized government of tyrannical control, with no accountability, that is destined to fail at whatever it does. if you want that, you are officially mad..

Well, that's actually why I voted for him, and I have a strong feeling that's why many voted for him. After eight years of insanity, and McCain looking like Bush-Continued, and the hypocrisy/fraud/religiosity/ass-kissing/lying/blind/anti-environment/neo-con attitudes of Palin scaring the hell out of us at the time, I think a good portion of us voted for someone who seemed to be not Bush.

Personally, I never saw him as any kind of "savior", etc. Actually, my FEAR at the time was that he was a novice and the pols would run right over him, he'd compromise, so he'd get little or nothing done. Gee...I guess I was prescient or something...

I voted for Edwards in the primary; if anyone were paying attention, he was talking about all the issues that later came to the fore and had everyone looking at them. Unfortunately not enough listened, and fortunately, as it turned out, he wasn't elected.

If he hadn't been in the race, I'd have voted for Hillary...I'd hope she'd be more like Bill, who for all his faults did some good things, and I thought she was savvy enough to hold her own in Washington. But Obama got the nomination, so as usual I was compelled to vote for what I saw as the lesser of two evils. I'm sick to death of voting that way.

I was hoping he would UNDO some of Dumbya's more egregious damage to our Constitution, and some of the environmental rape Dumbya put into place. He did the latter, not the former.

I said all that long ago, by the way, several times, yet, have been pegged as an "Obama lover" ever since, which initially I find weird, but by now understand, even tho' I'm sick to death of it.

The difference was that I was willing to give him a chance, not hate him from the outset because of some partisan ideology as the "anti-christ". I gave him a fair chance; he did some good things; but by now he's proven himself to be pretty much exactly what I feared, so I've pulled my support. That does NOT mean that I won't debate the more egregious blaming of him for everything that's wrong, or debate ridiculous points, but beause I do so, and because I'm not Conservative enough--given it's obvious at this time in history that you have to be a toe-the-line deeply conservative partisan to be accepted as anything but "you liberals", "you Democrats" or "you Obama lovers", which is sad.

I doubt that will ever change. As I remarked elsewhere, unless you hate Obama vigorously and think every single thing he or the Dems do is an abomination, you are the enemy, and RWAs need an enemy.

So as far as I'm concerned, there IS an element of racism in the attacking of Obama. It's not the sole reason, which I see my saying has been ignored over and over too, and it's not even "racism" as I see it...it's more "fear of the other". I think people voted for him despite their fear of the other, but in reaction to what Dumbya had done to us. I think what I believe about his being elected as the "not Bush"is upheld in part by the incredibly low approval ratings Dumbya had at the end; call it pendulum swing.

Obama's failure to fix things, the anger and frustration caused by most people's fear for their own financial sitaution, his name and the feeling that he's Scialist (which was created by right-wing pols and contributed to the "fear of different") has been played on, played TO and heightened by the rhetoric which began during the campaign and has continued, and gotten worse, ever since.

I think the lack of change from the state of the country which Dumbya left us in has caused people to become totally disillusioned. We were already suffering. 'Hope and change" sounded good at the time--they always do (catch Dumbya's own remarks on that which I posted). But the lack of same has been manipulated to focus the frustration onto Obama, and the fear of the other has been effectively played to. Whereas many people were willing to overlook his "otherness" initially--given he's actually half white--but the right-wing politicians' and talk radio and TV have used this Socialist tag, his name and the birther thing have brought the fear of "other" into people's minds, albeit subconsciously, and that this is borne out by the things his detractors in the Tea Party especially say and do.

That's how I see it, and have seen it all along.

I disagree with virtually everything Anti said, which is no surprise. The concept that all but a few of our Presidents have been "progressive" is absurd to me; besides Wilson, Taft and of course Roosevelt, I don't see it.

As to
Quote:

those principles again that we once held so dear, of true human liberty and freedom
, I'm so sick of "take our country back to what it once believed in" that it's not worth debating. It's a talking point, and the worst partisan right-wingers use it as a visceral tool, nothing more. I don't buy it.

And I absolutely don't agree that "Obama wants something that is counter-intuitive to human nature". That's also absurd, to me. If you don't think everyone except those in power actually wants some protection FROM their rich overlords, you don't know humans.

I believe Obama may well be seen as a failure, because weak people who can't get government to do what people view as right will always be seen as failures, despite the good they might do along the way; it has nothing to do with socialism. One has only to look at Dumbya to see someone who was the antithesis of failure, yet may well be seen as one of, if not the WORST failure by history.

"If George W. Bush had been the first President to need a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference, would you have laughed and said this is more proof of how inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes?

If George W. Bush had made a joke at the expense of the Special Olympics, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had given Gordon Brown a set of inexpensive and incorrectly formatted DVDs, when Gordon Brown had given him a thoughtful and historically significant gift, would you have approved?

Here we go again; who exactly said Obama was "brilliant and impressive"?? I haven't caught it, you must be reading from somewhere else.

As to all the things you listed, don't get me started; there are so many more faux pas on Dumbya's side it doesn't even compare.

Start with: If Obama had given the German Chancelor a back rub, would you have disapproved?

I could go on from there...Comparison is futile, man, give it up!

By the way; nice copy/paste from "The National Republican", if that's where you got it. That one is floating around all over the place, but it can be equalled and one-upped by Dumbya, if anyone cares to take the time.

P.S. He DID use a teleprompter...repeatedly....and had names and places spelled out phonetically so that he could say them and even then he failed!

Oh, wait, how about I give you the FACTS on your questions, dear? I found the "brilliant and impressive" quote, it’s from one of the postings of the above idiotic questions; Tom McMahon, http://www.tommcmahon.net/2009/07/what-if-george-w-bush-had-.html.

The entire list is an e-mail floating around, and it's bullshit. It’s been disproved and retaliated over and over, you’re once again swallowing the pablum without checking your facts. Okay, for OTHERS here who might take it seriously:

If George W. Bush had given Gordon Brown a set of inexpensive and incorrectly formatted DVDs, when Gordon Brown had given him a thoughtful and historically significant gift, would you have approved?

FACT: George bush gave Gordon Brown a Bomber Jacket which Gordon Brown promptly gave to charity, I imagine that was a better gift?

If George W. Bush had given the Queen of England an iPod containing videos of his speeches, would you have thought this embarrassingly narcissistic and tacky?

FACT: It would…if only the ipod had any Obama Speeches on it. It did however have show tunes that she has been well known to like and pictures of a visit she had to the U.S. Nothing about Obama was on the IPOD… so this is just a flat out lie. but while we have the queen in mind I would be a little mortified if my president winked at her.

If George W. Bush had bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia, would you have approved?

Are we seriously going there? Dumbya KISSED the Saudi Arabian King! See photos at:
http://mediamattersaction.org/rd?to=http%3A%2F%2Ftinyurl.com%2Fpmc98x

If George W. Bush had visited Austria and made reference to the non-existent “Austrian language ,” would you have brushed it off as a minor slip?

You mean like Bush thanking Australian premier John Howard for allowing him to visit their ‘Austrian’ troopsAlso, who can forget when Bush said he “doesn’t speak mexican”….Is that a language?

If George W. Bush had filled his cabinet and circle of advisers with people who cannot seem to keep current on their income taxes, would you have approved?

FACT: If Tim Geitner is considered “FILLING HIS CABINET AND CIRCLE OF ADVISORS” then this is correct. There is not one other cabinet or advisor that has had any discrepencies in taxes.

On the other hand, if Obama had appointed incompetent cronies with no background in what they were appointed to do, what would you have thought? For example, Michael Brown, who’s job before being appointed by Dumbya was as a Judges and Stewards Commissioner for the International Arabian Horse Association. Remember his “good job, Brownie” in Katrina? Check out a list of inept cronies at http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Bush_administration_cronyis
m_and_incompetence

If George W. Bush had been so Spanish illiterate as to refer to “Cinco de Cuatro” in front of the Mexican ambassador when it was the fourth of May (Cuatro de Mayo), and continued to flub it when he tried again, would you have winced in embarrassment?

Another lie. It was a joke becasue they were celebrating it a day early:

Quote: “Bienvenidos. Welcome to Cinco de Cuatro — (laughter) — Cinco de Mayo at the White House. We are a day early, but we always like to get a head start here at the Obama White House.” was the exact quote.

If George W. Bush had mis-spelled the word advice would you have hammered him for it for years like Dan Quayle and potatoe as “proof” of what a dunce he is?

FACT: It is a handwritten letter that had the word “advice” in it and someone mused that his “c” looked like an “s”….. Seriously? This is to the point it is humorous.

If George W. Bush had burned 9,000 gallons of jet fuel to go plant a single tree on “Earth Day”, would you have concluded he’s a hypocrite?

FACT: In 2004 Bush flew to wells maine to celebrate earth day, In 2005 Bush flew to Tenessee to celebrate earth day…we could go on and on….but no one seems to care how much Bush spent so this would be pointless. Otherwise we would have seen big e-mails making fun of bush flying around for earth day, which did not happen.

If George W. Bush’s administration had OK’ed Air Force One flying low over millions of people followed by a jet fighter in downtown Manhattan causing widespread panic, would you have wondered whether they actually “get” what happened on 9-11?

FACT: If the George Bush administartion allowed saudi evacuees to leave our country within 6 days of the attacks and then denied it until the 9/11 commission record came out and then rewound the first lie and stated … The Saudi embassy requested there evacuation after we had been hit by all Saudi Ariabians and this was allowed? Where was your anger and “wondering” then???

If George W. Bush had been the first President to need a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference, would you have laughed and said this is more proof of how inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes?

FACT: Dumbya DID use a teleprompter...repeatedly....and had names and places spelled out phonetically so that he could say them, and even then he failed! See photos at:

http://mediamattersaction.org/rd?to=http%3A%2F%2Ftinyurl.com%2Fr43fxj

If George W. Bush had failed to send relief aid to flood victims throughout the Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans, would you want it made into a major ongoing political issue with claims of racism and incompetence?

FACT: 1836 people killed and over 275,000 homes were lost in Katrina. The midwest flood killed 24 people and approx. 10,000 homes were lost. What is the comparison and what does it have to do with Barack that has passed additional funding for the midwest flood relief?

If George W. Bush had proposed to double the national debt, which had taken more than two centuries to accumulate, in one year, would you have approved?

The national debt in Jan. 2001 was 5.7 Trillion
The National debt in Jan 2009 was 10.7 trillion.
Was this a trick question? What IF Bush nearly doubled the debt?

If George W. Bush had then proposed to double the debt again 10 times within years, would you have approved?
Can I get the place that proposal came from? Funny enough I cannot find a quote from Obama proposing to double the debt again 10 times within the next few years. and by the fact checks of this post, I am going to go out on a limb and say this too has been fabricated.

If George W. Bush had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to take Laura Bush to a play in NYC, would you have approved?

FACT: George Bush took a total of 237 Vacations (1020 DAYS) during his presidency. This is an average of 2.5 vacations per month every month he was in office. Are we seriously talking about baracks ONE NIGHT IN NEW YORK?

“George W. Bush had made 149 trips to and spent 487 days at Camp David, with another 77 getaways to (and 490 days at) Crawford. Toss in 11 visits and 43 days at his folks’ compound in Kennebunkport, Maine and President Bush spent 1020 days – 35% of his presidency – getting away from the White House. Breaking the record for vaction days.”

HOW MUCH DO YOU THINK THAT RAN US?

As to” If George W. Bush had reduced your retirement plan's holdings of GM stock by 90% and given the unions a majority stake in GM, would you have approved?

According to one commission set up to investigate the use of private contractors, "billions of dollars of the massive contracts given out to private contractors ended up wasted due to poorly defined work orders, inadequate oversight and contractor inefficiencies. In one example, defense auditors challenged KBR after it billed the government for $100 million in costs for private security even though the contract prohibited the use of for-hire guards." Would you have approved of THAT?

How about: If Obama had given the German Chancelor a back rub, would you have disapproved?

I could go on from there...Comparison is futile, man, give it up!

You want faux pas in speaking? I thought I gave you enough...sigh...but okay, here’s just one more:

"One of the very difficult parts of the decision I made on the financial crisis was to use hardworking people's money to help prevent there to be a crisis."—Washington, D.C., Jan. 12, 2009

I believe you've got your sources wrong, Wulfie. That bill is being sponsored by Joe Lieberman. Remember him? He was the guy who was out stumping for McCain, and was rumored to be on McCain's short list for VP in '08.

Quote:

A widely-cited report in Wired describes a legislative initiative by Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and Senator Susan Collins of Maine that would vastly expand federal powers over "critical infrastructure," including commercial Internet providers, in the name of Homeland Security.

He wants "the President" (ANY President)and "the government" to have the ability to take control of the internet "in a time of war". And when in the last half century have we NOT been "at war" with one fuzzy concept or another. War on (some) Drugs, War on Poverty (Poverty won!), War on Terror, War on Hunger, etc., etc.

Sorry, that's not Obama or his administration. And it damned well better be voted DOWN, too, if anyone's even stupid enough to ever let it get to the floor for a vote!

Lieberman is a right-leaning independent; Susan Collins is a Republican. Neither of them have ever served in Obama's administration. Your rage and anger are midguided and off-target. Again.

I don't "rush to his defense"...there are many instances where I have condemned his policies or actions; you and others just choose to ignore them. As I clearly wrote (or at least I thought it was clear):
Quote:

That does NOT mean that I won't debate the more egregious blaming of him for everything that's wrong, or debate ridiculous points, but beause I do so, and because I'm not Conservative enough--given it's obvious at this time in history that you have to be a toe-the-line deeply conservative partisan to be accepted as anything but "you liberals", "you Democrats" or "you Obama lovers", which is sad.
Yes, I will try to bring perspective to discussions and debates, and the anti-Obama, anti-Dem, anti-liberal material which virtually fills this forum prompts me to speak up.

I rarely defend Obama; more often I point out that he's not the whole government, or point to what he HAS done. As to what you listed:

1) I'm thoroughly disgusted by that, and have said so previously.

2) I'm not convinced the healthcare reform bill was as bad as most Tea Partiers and RWAs are. Time will tell. I have said repeatedly, however, that I'm pissed off it's not as good a bill as it could be, and frequently blame Obama for his insistence on "compromise".

3) What's "floating around" has nothing to do with what Obama has or hasn't DONE.

4) I'm not against Affirmative Action; I think it needs revamping, but not elimination.

While we're at it, DADT IS on the way out, which fails to get any credit.

Alternative energy may well get a new life, and just possibly could start going somewhere, after every single President since and including Reagan has been saying we'd do something about it. Time will tell on that too.

While we’re at it, despite the RWAs among us refusing to acknowledge any of them, he HAS done or helped to get done some things:

Instituted enforcement for equal pay for women
Families of fallen soldiers have expenses covered to be on hand when the body arrives at Dover AF
Ended media blackout on covering the return of fallen soldiers to Dover AFB
Removed restrictions on embryonic stem-cell research
New federal funding for science and research labs
Increased infrastructure spending (roads, bridges, power plants) after years of neglect
New funds for school construction
Better body armor is now being provided to our troops
The missile defense program is being cut by $1.4 billion in 2010
Restarted the nuclear nonproliferation talks and building back up the nuclear inspection infrastructure/protocols
Signed national service legislation; expanded national youth service program
Instituted a new policy on Cuba, allowing Cuban families to return home to visit loved ones

Some are minor, some are incomplete, some he hasn't done enough on. But there have been accomplishments.

What you see as me "rushing to his defense" is actually me citing good things sometimes, mitigating some of the flat statements against this administration; essentially being devil’s advocate to counter the consistent attacks on him, liberals, dems, and his administration.

I also have NO doubt Bush accomplished some worthwhile things and freely say so. In other words; I speak my piece, pro or con, as I have learned about it, see it and believe it on any subject which comes up. And again, it’s pretty obvious that here, and other places, unless you damn Obama, libs, dems, etc., universally, you’re seen as an Obama lover. It’s not true for me, I believe in fairness and calling ‘em as I see ‘em.

Oh, dear, that was a good one (wiping tears...)

Lieberman is officially an Independent; he caucuses with the Democrats; he votes with the Republicans an awful lot of the time. He's an "Independent" in order to get elected.

Remember who he campaigned for??

Aside from which:
Quote:

Earlier this month, it was reported that Lieberman and Sen. Susan Collins were prepping a bill that would allow the government to "take over" civilian network in an emergency. The news prompted many to dub this option an "Internet kill switch."

On Sunday, Lieberman denied that this was the case, but said the government needed the option to shut down certain parts of the Web should they come under attack.

The country's "electric grid, the telecommunications grid, transportation, all the rest is constantly being probed by nation states, by some terrorist groups, by organized criminal gangs," he said.

As a result, "we need the capacity for the president to say, Internet service provider, we've got to disconnect the American Internet from all traffic coming in from another foreign country, or we've got to put a patch on this part of it," he said.

Sure, it could potentially be abused, but pundits calling it a "kill switch" are feeding you more pablum... Those who want to use the visceral "kill switch" verbiage are the kind who write on the internet that the bank bailout is "The greatest bankster heist in history and the looming greatest depression rumbles on." and "a massive stretch of Arizona has become effectively off limits to Americans, Prompting questions over whether the Obama administration is giving a major strip of the south-west back to Mexico", such as the author of that link you put up, who thoroughly enjoyed inserting "Bilderburg" wherever he could.

Sigh...Some of us READ material and make up our own minds. Some of us, not so much.

Joe Lieberman is a Democrat.

Wow.... what a surprise.

Actually, he really isn't. Or rather, he is a "Democrat" to the exact same degree that the tea-baggers are "Republicans", since the overwhelming majority of them ARE registered as Republicans. I don't know a single liberal around here - or anywhere, really - who supported his reelection bid, or who has supported anythin he's done or said since.

Lieberman ran as an "Independent" after he lost his Democratic party primary last time around. And he's stayed pretty close to the Republican side of things ever since, even endorsing McCain in '08, and offering to speak at the Republican National Convention.

Or do y'all just make a habit of inviting EVERY "Democrat" to speak at your little meetings? Sorry, he's your boy, not ours. You're welcome to him, too.

ANTIMASON

Niki2, what mess did "Dumbya" leave us, that Obama hasn't perpetuated or propelled into hyperdrive? the spending? its worse now. prescription drug? we've got Obama-care. the war in Iraq? we havent pulled out like the president promised, we're bombing Pakistan and Yemen now. do you blame Bush for the high energy prices? because wait and see what Cap and Trade does to your energy bill. besides social policy, which both parties are guilty of sticking their noses in.. as a whole, the only difference i can see is the economy is now in worse shape after almost 4 years of democrat majorities.

Bush was no free-market capitalist. he was more a Nixon, Ford, country club republican, who in 2008, around the time of TARP, said 'we had to temporarily abandon free market principles.. to save the free market'. i mean what? Bush tried a stimulus, based on the Keynsian theory of economics, and it failed! if government could simply print money and hand it out to people, and this simple act alone would sustain and grow the economy, we wouldnt be in this mess! why not then just give every unemployed citizen a government job? because it doesnt work like that, which is why Obamas 1 trillion dollar stimulus was inherently flawed and fallacious

I disagree with virtually everything Anti said, which is no surprise. The concept that all but a few of our Presidents have been "progressive" is absurd to me; besides Wilson, Taft and of course Roosevelt, I don't see it.

i didnt say all, i said recent presidents, like the last century or so.

Quote:

, I'm so sick of "take our country back to what it once believed in" that it's not worth debating. It's a talking point, and the worst partisan right-wingers use it as a visceral tool, nothing more. I don't buy it.

we dont follow the original intent of the constitution. i dont see whats so annoying, and contemptable, about people wanting to restore the law as it was written. im pretty sure the executive branch was not intended to be a dictatorship, or the congress an unhinged 'democracy'

Quote:

And I absolutely don't agree that "Obama wants something that is counter-intuitive to human nature". That's also absurd, to me. If you don't think everyone except those in power actually wants some protection FROM their rich overlords, you don't know humans.

rich overlords. you know who the biggest violators of human liberties have been throughout history? governments. only government can pass laws to restrict liberty. liberty, or natural law, is intuitive to human nature. tryanny, coercion, slavery, central planning.. these things are counter intuitive to human nature. when you talk about 'protection' from these overlords, what you mean is government, using force, to take the liberty and property from one class of people, to give to another. it's wrong, no matter how you look at it

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety". and that's not Antimason saying that.. thats old Ben Franklin. so... yah
