Top officials in President Hamid Karzai's government have repeatedly derailed corruption investigations of politically connected Afghans, according to U.S. officials who have provided Afghanistan's authorities with wiretapping technology and other assistance in efforts to crack down on endemic graft.

In recent months, the U.S. officials said, Afghan prosecutors and investigators have been ordered to cross names off case files, prevent senior officials from being placed under arrest and disregard evidence against executives of a major financial firm suspected of helping the nation's elite move millions of dollars overseas.

As a result, U.S. advisers sent to Kabul by the Justice Department, the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration have come to see Afghanistan's corruption problem in increasingly stark terms.

"Above a certain level, people are being very well protected," said a senior U.S. official involved in the investigations.

U.S. officials point to multiple instances of interference. The most prominent example to surface publicly involves Afghanistan's former minister of Islamic affairs, who fled the country this year as prosecutors were preparing to charge him with extorting millions of dollars from companies seeking contracts to take pilgrims to the Muslim holy land, a trip known as the hajj.

Critics say Karzai's initiatives are meant to appease the international community. "It's all a show," lawmaker Sayed Rahman said, noting that no senior government official has been imprisoned on corruption charges.

Over the past year, U.S. officials said, Afghan investigators have assembled evidence against three Karzai-appointed provincial governors accused of embezzlement or bribery. All three cases have been blocked. The interference has persisted, officials said, despite Karzai's pledge in November during his second inaugural address to make fighting corruption a focus of his new term

A key capability is a U.S.-provided eavesdropping system that allows Afghan investigators to intercept cellphone calls in the most populous parts of the country.

The wiretaps, approved by Afghan judges, have yielded key evidence in a growing list of embezzlement and bribery cases. U.S. officials said the wiretaps have also caught senior officials and members of parliament discussing efforts to derail certain cases.

Niki, you know Afghanistan. I'm trying to remember if you said before. Is this just... How it works over in Afghanistan? Is this just a transition phase between what Afghans are used to (corruption) to a point when people who are corrupt in the government can be held accountable?

Or is this outside the norms for an Afghan government?

She likes to talk about Afghanistan, I'm interested to hear what she thinks about the status of government corruption in Afghanistan, if it's fixable and etc. She knows more about it than most of us do, having lived there.

It's Chalabi all over again, Curveball II - no, this level of baksheesh is a bit beyond even Afghanistan on a bad day, Byte, and it doesn't help that the State Dept is so busy kissin Sunni ass they don't see the Shiite apocolypse looming behind the very INSTANT Kharazi and his goons are no longer supported by our guns.

Cause that's the thing, we'd done did it, and all we're doing now is piling the shit higher on the other side of the wall, hoping some kinda fuckin miracle will happen (yanno, like being safely retired or no longer in office to blame) before that wall collapses and it all comes down in a heap.

So essentially we're gonna wind up with a bloody civil war that makes everything up to this point look like mild foreplay, and a radical Shiite government with lots of Tali-tubbies *AND* Northern Warlords on it who utterly, passionately despise our county, it's government, and our culture/society, which will drive Afghanistan even FURTHER back into the dark ages cause they'll rampage against the slightest hint of "westernization" like they're the motherfuckin spanish inquisition, and probably steamroller RAWA in the bargain - ideas are bulletproof, but the people holding them aren't.

So no, it's not a matter of if - it's a matter of when.

Hate to disappoint you Wulf (since I know you just love to lump all "libs/progs" into one group), but McDonald doesn't bother me at al, I really won't miss Byrd, and even Orin Hatch says Kagan's going to be confirmed, so that "grilling" she's getting doesn't seem to be going your way.
