http://foodfreedom.wordpress.com/2010/06/29/choosing-healthy-foods-now
-called-a-mental-disorder
/

In its never-ending attempt to fabricate “mental disorders” out of every human activity, the psychiatric industry is now pushing the most ridiculous disease they’ve invented yet: Healthy eating disorder. This is no joke: If you focus on eating healthy foods, you’re “mentally diseased” and probably need some sort of chemical treatment involving powerful psychotropic drugs.

The Guardian newspaper reports, “Fixation with healthy eating can be sign of serious psychological disorder” and goes on to claim this “disease” is called orthorexia nervosa — which is basically just Latin for “nervous about correct eating.”

But they can’t just call it “nervous healthy eating disorder” because that doesn’t sound like they know what they’re talking about. So they translate it into Latin where it sounds smart (even though it isn’t). That’s where most disease names come from: Doctors just describe the symptoms they see with a name like osteoporosis (which means “bones with holes in them”).

Getting back to this fabricated “orthorexia” disease, the Guardian goes on to report, “Orthorexics commonly have rigid rules around eating. Refusing to touch sugar, salt, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, gluten, yeast, soya, corn and dairy foods is just the start of their diet restrictions. Any foods that have come into contact with pesticides, herbicides or contain artificial additives are also out.”

While I agree with you reaction to this "disorder", I disagree with your gripe about Latin disease names. They make translation between different languages easier, for one. Plus, it's usually shorter than a descriptive name like you suggest.

But geez. Healthy eating disorder?? Someone needs to go stand in the corner and think about what they've just done.

ETA: Correction, not your gripe. It's the guy who wrote the article.

ETA, again, to criticize: while the rant itself is fairly new, the article it claims as a source is nearly a year old. The concept is not without controversy in medical circles and the main factors that is used to classify certain behavior as a disease is if it causes the person undue stress or suffering, basically if it decreases their quality of life, as opposed to improving it, if it's about control rather than health concerns.

So while still entirely questionable, I find it slightly less offensive now that I've thought about it more.

Terrible.

"Salt" is the new drug of choice among the people. "Sugar" too.

Got to ban it, ban it I say!

Otherwise, people might become addicted to it.

Why, just the other day, I saw someone put salt on their watermelon! Imagine that?!!

But then again, eating healthy is the same way. You can get all sorts of mental illnesses from it.

Tofu is a gateway food to being a hippie.

heh

(You know what would be nice? If noone told us what we could eat... that would be great. Just make sure the food doesnt have any glass in it, or rat crap... Mexican taco trucks, Im looking at you... and that would be awesome! If someone is fat, its because they ate too much. But is that too much free thought and freedom of self-determination?)

The constant change in the science of what is good for you is enough to make anyone crazy. Latest research shows a good steak is better for you than the carbohydrates they've been pushing on us for years. Personally I just eat what I like because eventually some scientific study will show it's good for me.

I made brownies today too, fuck that vegetable oil crap, melted me a stick of real butter, tossed in a couple extra teaspoons of Godiva cocoa, and just to be a complete freakin hedonist, topped em with chocolate candy sprinkles!

Yes, but don't you know, anything good for you can be taken too far, just as anything bad can. My granny makes a point of telling me EVERY DAMN TIME we eat together of how many calories are in something...So I don't eat with her anymore, which is a shame...I'm over a foot taller than she is so I imagine I do look like a goliath to her but all I want is a pinapple shake, for crissakes! When eating healthy becomes such an obsession that ya CAN'T let it go-even for one meal- then yeah, you do have a problem...

the opinion on latin names is actually a direct quote from this rant of an article.

If anyone had taken a moment to read the actual article instead of the headline and the abstract they would see it is conspiracy tripe on the order of the garbage PN digs up. The author says that this disorder (an unrecognized by national health organizations and is actually just a theory by one doctor saying there are people who become so fixated on food being unhealthy they will actually malnourish or kill themselves in their almost phobia like state concerning the nutrition value of food) *see wiki about Orthorexia Nervosa*

The author goes onto claim this disorder/disease/theory is the fabrication of the government trying to keep us eating "toxins" and chemicals in our junk food that drug us into a docile and suggestible state so that our leaders can keep us under their thumb. According to the author the only way to overcome this is to shrug off the yoke of processed foods which enslave the mind and eat "living food" a term I can only assume applies to organic, natural foods. The fear of hidden strings in this article is ludicrous.

Now, I'm all for eating healthy. I need to do that more myself, and the more I read and learn the more I'm supportive of certain movements to better control our standards of treatment for food animals, not saying don't eat them (I love me some burgers) saying treat them well while we're raising them because unhealthy animals probably don't make for healthy meat.

However, the stress upon "toxins" (a laughable term because if we were consuming the level of toxins these people insist we are, we'd all be toast by now) and the stress upon government credibility for the diet of the American public is just plain foolish, with a few specific exceptions. those being 1. As I said higher FDA meat expectations and regulations that meat (often the means of production are not readily transparent to the buying public) are raised. 2. State institutions that feed people (military, prisons, schools) should be monitored by the gov't as it is a gov't facility.

Otherwise it's as Wulf expressed, up to the self-respecting consumer to say "oh this has a lot of salt in it, or a lot of sugar, maybe I shouldn't eat the whole box in one sitting." instead of telling the potato chip company they are not allowed to use salt.

I also support careful observation of the effects of preservatives on health, as not every consumer can be a bio-chemist, but the push to increase studies and discerning information has to come from the public, not from some government entity on a mission to save everyone.

Reenact: (EDIT: I think this turned into something of a rant, so for courtesy sake to you, I'm snipping it.)

The thing is, there are toxins a PLENTY, and they seem to be having an impact, because statistically we're a lot more unhealthy than we've been in the past. Maybe it floors you to imagine that many toxins, so you think no one can have that many toxins and live. It's a matter of dose, exposure, and accumulation. But the food definitely isn't good for us.

And it doesn't help that we don't understand the long term effects of the chemical additives in food, because the FDA so doesn't really require safety and efficacy testing for "dietary supplements", and the longest test period I've ever heard of for other food additives is about two years. It's hard to prove it, but much like the inspectors for the oil platforms out in the gulf, there's some strong indications that both the FDA and legislators loosening quality control standards on food and drugs have a very close relationship with the food (and pharmaceutical) industry.

Quote:

The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 mandated that the FDA regulate dietary supplements as foods, rather than as drugs. Therefore, dietary supplements are not subject to safety and efficacy testing and there are no approval requirements. The FDA can take action against dietary supplements only after they are proven to be unsafe. Manufacturers of dietary supplements are permitted to make specific claims of health benefits, referred to as "structure or function claims" on the labels of these products. They may not claim to treat, diagnose, cure, or prevent disease and must include a disclaimer on the label.

Sometimes things that sound crazy aren't actually crazy. The FDA is doing the exact opposite of being a crusader for public health, they aren't getting us the information we consumers need to make the right choices.

and that's not even getting into the stuff we take in because of pollution, such as mercury from fish, and leeching BPAs from plastic.

Yeah, the guy might be a nutcase, but in this case he's not that far off the mark.

I try to eat healthy. Okay, healthiER. Less meat, better meat, organic produce when I can, less fat, I've pretty much given up the heavily processed foods, etc.

As for the FDA, here's something I really wish people would take to heart, and remember. The FDA is part of the "safety net" of the government. It's not supposed to live your life; it's supposed to help you. Think of the FDA as the LOWEST seal of approval you should be willing to accept. Instead of looking at something and saying, "Hey, this is FDA approved - it MUST be good!", try looking at it and saying, "Hey, the FDA says this probably won't kill me. At least, not today, anyway..."

FDA approval doesn't mean it's safe. It means they haven't found any lethal side effects YET.

The FDA wasn't designed to insure that everything you put in your body is perfect and healthy; it was designed to make sure the stuff you put in your body wasn't completely toxic. That was the general idea. Think back to snake-oil and patent medicines - the "Cobalt Cure" and "Rhodium" dietary supplements and the like - things which, when taken as directed, would absolutely kill you. The FDA was put in place to try to stop those kinds of abuses.

Everyone ought to either 1) have an organic, fair trade vegan diet and die of pellagra or 2) "live" solely on fast food. To hell with balance. Balance is for cowards. The only kind of balance I have is swinging from one lunatic extreme to another. Over the long run, it evens out.

Oppositional Maladaptive Mental Disorder (OMMD)
OMMD is usually associated with stubborn resistance to conform to social norms in conjunction with the aberrant inability to adjust to normal responses or behaviors when engaging in strenuous cognitive activity.

Source: Page 619 of the DSM-IV-FE*

Found the disease you like? Take these steps to get filthy rich!
Patent a dangerous chemical as a "treatment" for OMMD.
Invent fictitious trial results that prove the drug is effective in treating OMMD.
Bribe FDA officials into approving the drug as safe for everyone! (Even if it kills people.)
Submit to the American Psychiatric Association for inclusion in their DSM-IV (the standard reference guide of psychiatric disorders).
Create an emotional TV ad that shows unhappy, confused people being transformed into perfect beings after they take your drug.
Issue press releases to mainstream media outlets who will run your propaganda as news with zero skepticism.
Bribe doctors with vacations, extravagant meals and "consulting fees" in order to get them to prescribe your drug to as many patients as possible.
Buy off politicians and legislators to block alternative medicine and enforce a pharmaceutical monopoly.
Sit back and rake in the dough** while Americans go broke buying your drug to treat OMMD!
When the lawsuits roll in from the families of dead patients, simply use a small portion of your windfall profits to settle out of court, admitting no guilt.

The worst of it is trying to point that shit out to people and being dismissed as a nutter, by everyone, including those closest to you, and then having to watch as the horrible cost of that comes to bear, to feel so powerless against the STUPIDITY of even the people you love as they go back to lapping up the propaganda of the corporate machine - even when the price is clear, even when it cost one of them... everything.

But no, right back to the fuckin koolaid they go.
