I'd say pipelines everywhere are poorly maintained. It's the downside to them being weather vulnerable and so long that visual inspections are improbable.

I've heard BP does, amazingly, do some repairs on their pipeline up there, but it tends to be more along the lines of the structure support legs that hold the pipe up, they sink on the occasions when the groundfrost thaws. But they don't tend to do much with the pipe (besides pig monitoring), that would require stopping flow through it (horror!).

This was the spill they had just a short while Dep Water Horizon, right?

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

It seems that this company can not even maintain a pipe, much less a sophisticated drilling operation.

It's nice to know, for all those arguing for Alaskan operations over Deep Water drilling, that the oil industry is quite capable of mucking up anything and everything.

So it's not either-or. It's all-or-nothing.

Heh, that's what payin attention nets ya.

This is every spring/summer - every single one, and coincidentally right around the time fuel prices usually dip due to folks goin outside and walkin, riding bikes and whatnot cause the weather is nicer.

Ain't that it didn't happen, you just didn't NOTICE.

Sick bastards...and these are the people we are trusting to clean up the Gulf? Don't make me laugh.

They are quite willing to sink to any depths to do their thing, and it sickens me.

In one case, BP's CEO of Alaskan operations hired a former CIA expert to break into the home of a whistleblower, Chuck Hamel, who had complained of conditions at the pipe's tanker facility. BP tapped his phone calls with a US congressman and ran a surveillance and smear campaign against him. When caught, a US federal judge said BP's acts were "reminiscent of Nazi Germany."
WHY is our government letting them handle the gulf gusherfuck again? Oh, yeah, that's right; 'cuz they're bought and paid for, I forgot...

The REAL question, Niki, is why do we let them drill here at all?

You must have me confused with somebody else. Maybe you're looking in the mirror.

You're talking to the wrong person, Kanegirl. I voted for Obama because he was the lesser of two evils--do you think things would have been better under McCain/Ms. Drill Baby Drill??

Trying to stop drilling, Mike, is an impossibility hard to even conceive of, given our country's addiction to petroleum. Just getting our government to provide SOME kind of oversight and to take over in this clusterfuck and HELP clean it up, since it's obvious to all that BP has no interest in that part of it, SHOULD be realistic.

And yes, I realize virtually ALL our politicians are in the pocket of big oil to one degree or another. I happen to think Obama would get some stuff through if the Republicans weren't determined to stifle any kind of legislation or regulation, but I put the blame on Obama for not taking over and telling them to go to hell where the cleanup is concerned.

That's a good place to put some of the blame, because he is allowing multiple Govt. Agency bureaucrats to make decisions down there. Coast Guard, Labor, EPA, Interior, etc. etc. are all "in charge." And their uncoordinated hip-shooting is just hurting each states' efforts to protect their land and citizens. Little tin-plated Government keystone kops with badges running around with their little books of rules & regulations. It's total chaos and insanity running the show now.

You misread and misunderstood me, Niki. What I'm saying is why are we allowing *BP* to drill here at all? I realize that some drilling is still going to happen, but are y'all trying to tell me that we have no say in WHO drills on our land, in our waters? Really?

We can find a way to run a community organizing service (ACORN) out of business by singling them out for a bill of attainder; certainly we can do the same for BP if we so desired, right, and run them out of this country?

JS, you nailed it:

I don't think it's total chaos and insanity, but it's all too obvious what's happening and who's behind it (BP). Maybe we should have given them a chance at first, by by now nobody's fooled about the fact that they're doing whatever necessary to minimize their responsibility and make it look less bad than it is, while there interest in the gulf and its residents is NIL. "We" should have taken over weeks ago when that became obvious.

If you mean me, DT, yes, I voted for Obama. You think I'd have voted for Mr. "I'm not a maverick" McCain and Ms. "Drill Baby Drill" Palin? You think things would be BETTER under them?

I used to respect McCain, whether I agreed with him or not. Early on I realized he had sold his soul to the party in order to get his last chance at the prize. I'm convinced that's how he let them foist Sarahcuda on him, and she helped sink him.

What I'd love is a VIABLE third party, but I'm not holding my breath.

Mike, I repeat what I said even if it’s just applicable to BP. They’ve bought our politicians—I’d bet more than any other company (tho’ I don’t know the facts). There’s no way, given we NEED oil, that our government would tell them to take a long walk off a short pier...they may have BLUFFED they would to get the $20 billion, but I don’t believe for a second they would actually DO it. Follow the money...it doesn’t just lead to Obama, and Obama couldn’t do much if he WANTED to; surely you’ve heard the Repugs bitching and moaning and spouting their line about drilling, trying to minimize BP’s responsibility, etc. It’s not hard to see which way the land lies, and ousting BP just ain’t gonna happen any mo re than stopping drilling altogether! JMHO.
