Well, here in Vermont it is anyways... singing drag queens and more rainbows than a care bear factory, good times! So, happy Vermont Pride Day to anyone to whom it applies. *throws flowers*

Woo hoo! Hope it went great. Ours was in June but I couldn't make it this year ... reports from pals say it was one of the best-ever, and it was certainly great weather for it ... hot and sunny.

Cheers,

Good for you. Every other day Vermont has no pride, so good for you.

Look, I'm probably going to regret this, but I HAVE to ask--if homosexuality is a biological condition (i.e. you're wired that way), why does there need to be a Pride Day?

Now, that said, I'll bet there are things like "Left Handed Day" and "Twins Day" so maybe it's as simple as that. Some genetic anomolies are minorites of one kind or another and as such, want a day to feel special. I guess I got no problem with that.

We don't have anything like it in Ohio so I can't speak from experience of having seen one. That might change my opinion.

There are similar occurances such as Black History Month and there are Latin festivals and hell there is even a Talk Like a Pirate Day. People celebrate all kinds of things.
I think it is fabulous and I am always happy to participate. I think of it as being a way to let people know you are not ashamed about something that some think is shameful.

I think of it as there are a lot of morons out there that disagree with this way of being so much so that they have gone out and created a terrible image of what homosexuals are/aren't. So, this day is the community going out and displaying what they actually are and that they aren't afraid to say it anymore.

It's kind of a protest against the terror that they've been put through over the years. Unfortunately, this will have to continue for, IMHO, generations as there are too many idiots that are still against this way of being.

That being said, after the job is complete it's still good to have a party every once in a while and to remember your past, etc.

Okay, I'm NOT tryin' to hate here, I really want to know this. Please read with an open mind.

The pics I have seen of gay pride parades and stuff from NYC and Frisco are typically involving a lot of leather, guys in drag, really over-the-top stuff. Is this "displaying what they actually are" or in fact anything to be proud of?

I think if I were a young man and not sure about my own orientation, I would be scared away by this kind of behavior--I'd be afraid that, if being gay means I have to be THAT, even one day a year, then it isn't for me.

Maybe the media focuses on the extreme examples of people in these parades and some of them look normal. I really don't know. But obviously the majority of gays don't go through life looking like La Cage aux Folles extras.

Yeah, our local newspaper tends to take pics of only the outlandish stuff ... that's the trade for visual media: exciting visuals. A bunch of homosexuals talking about this, that, or the other thing during the speeches gets practically no coverage at all.

So I'm voting that you're seeing media bias, for the most part. Attend one some time if you get the chance ... they're probably mostly *not* what you think (and a lot of fun, besides).

Cheers,

JCKnife:
I (nor I think anyone here) is trying to say that you are haten'. I just mentioned my thoughts on the matter.

The media tends to stick with the outragous stuff. I have seen as many crazy pics as normal at these functions. I guess it's just where you look.

I'd suggest going out and seeing for yourself. Mingle with the people to get a good idea of what's what.

Just being careful--I've been a fairly staunch voice of conservatism in other posts and I don't want to be pigeonholed as a homophobe just becuause I'm a gun nut.

I'm from Ohio and we have our share. Here's a sample:

Destroyer Escort Day (3rd Sat in June)
Ohio Mammography Day (3rd Thurs in October)
Oktoberfest (in October)
St. Patty's Day (held twice a year in my town)
National Administrative Workers Day
First Monday (Supreme Court Day, held in October)

And what about those of us (like Adam Baldwin for example) who like to dress like that and are not gay? Nobody considers their feeings.
