"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

My take on it is that many of the "serious" actors and actresses would rather have a series to sink their teeth into these days, rather than just another two-hour explosion-and-CGI-fest, because a series really gives them the chance to explore the character, to live in that character's world, stretch their acting legs, so to speak.

And I'm tellin' ya, some of the very best TV you'll find these days is on cable: FX, TNT, USA, HBO, etc.

Also, if they can work the deal right, and the show goes long enough (say, five seasons or more), then they can be set for life money-wise on the syndication revenue, not to mention DVD/Blu-Ray/iTunes/digital download sales...

Oh, and I too missed BSG the last time around. I've heard good and bad about it, and it's on my list, but that's a long list... I do like Caprica, though (the "prequel" series on SyFy now)

I couldn't take it. It seemed like she just took too many opportunities to appear naked in it, and her body looks kinda haggard, in a meth-addicted kind of way... [shudder]

I like Holly Hunter as an actress, but I did not like that show. "Saving Grace", I think it was called. Watched most of a season, so I definitely gave it a chance, but it wasn't for me. And I actually *LIKE* "gritty" realism.

I thoroughly enjoy Goldblum replacing Donofrio on CI. Not a big CI fan, prefer SVU, but a big Goldblum fan from way back (NOT saying he has talent, he's just so tall and--in my opinion--yummy!)

Have not caught CI in quite some time. They were getting really desperate when it went to USA, and it showed in the writing, I thought. I grew bored with its formulaic predictability, and wandered away and lost track.

I know there are others, too--oh, Glenn Close has a series I saw (haven't caught it)--something starts with a "D"? Can you think of others?

"Damages". Again, it's gritty. She's amazing. I hate her character, but I can't stop watching her. Good supporting cast, too. Ted Danson, William Hurt, Zjelko Ivanic, Campbell Scott, and more. Loved Glenn Close's performance on The Shield, too.

Others... Sons of Anarchy; Ron Perlman puts out a pretty solid performance. Justified; Timothy Olyphant is damned good, but Walton Goggins's performance is a revelation (He played Shane Vandrell on The Shield).

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Here's the most accurate way I can convey what Battlestar Galactica was to me...

1) Think of Voyager, a lone ship separated from its government.

2) Think specifically of the one episode of Voyager that truly conveyed the reality of that situation: "Year of Hell."

3) Now imagine that Voyager actually has no way to EVER get back in touch with the Federation, because the Feds are just gone.

4) Oh, and imagine that Voyager is being pursued relentlessly by an enemy they can't escape and can't outfight.

5) An enemy who has spies in their ranks.

6) Now add the Maquis as an additional antagonist, the way they should have been: with endless infighting and threat of mutiny spawning from within even 'trusted' ranks. This goes on throughout the series. There is no happy episode early on where everyone just agrees to get along.

7) Stretch the pain and uncertainty of this for multiple seasons. The ship and crew continue to degrade and die without reprieve.

8) Surrender the idea of 'happy endings.' At most, aspire to brief moments of relative peace. There are no long-term solutions, no time-travel fix-it episodes. Technobabble eureka cures can't save you.

9) Finally, add in the religious overtones of Deep Space Nine.

That's BSG.

Niki2, you have gained a new friend. I didn't know how much you enjoy movies and tv shows.

I feel the same way. I could watch (and have) something like Passion Fish, but thoroughly enjoy a "bad" movie like Flash Gordon or the HI-larious Galaxy Quest over and over. Enjoyment is key. What tickles you may not necessarily tickle me, but I'll defend your right to embarass yourself ;-)

BTW you make a good point about The Fog. Remake....hated it! One of my guilty pleasures is Dave (with Kevin Kline, pompous windbag) and Princess Caraboo (the lovely Phoebe Cates was awesome in this little movie). Whenever I'm a little down I pull out that or Snatch (Brad Pitt has a small HI-larious pivotal role).

I get what you mean by characters growing within the course of the movie or tv show, such as in Serenity and Firefly. Its the small, almost imperceptible, nuanced growth that I look for.
In Serenity - River throws up after viewing the disc about the secret of Miranda, then she tells Simon "I feel better." You could see it in her eyes that she means much more than her physical well being. Genius, both the writing and acting.

In Rainman (yes, that movie) Tom Cruise's character discovers that the brother he kidnapped, Ray, was the Rainman of his youth. The big brother that cared and loved him. You could see the transformation and the bond between 2 brothers who lost their way. So yes, I consider character growth to be a biggie in the movies I watch.

But there are times when a performance is so minutely detailed and subtle, sometimes purposefully so, that it takes a second or third viewing to catch it. Watch Book of Eli, if you haven't already, Denzel is masterful. I'm going to watch it a second time soon. A co-worker and I talked about this and he turned me on to something I totally missed in his performance.

Same is true for Philadelphia. Tom Hanks was a powerhouse in that one, but Denzel was like a good dance partner, supporting his dance mate. Although his character grew from beginning to end, it was more in the how he got there.

Mystery, Alaska; Dogma, but especially a Fish Called Wanda ("what was that middle one again" and "It's K-K-K-Ken, he's coming to K-K-K-Kill me.") classic farce. I have another guilty pleasure that I get a kick out of "Oscar" with Sly Stallone. Rent it, it's HI-larious. Stupid funny! It's Galaxy Quest, but with Roaring 20's mobsters.

But your right, there is no right or wrong when it comes to movie watching. Sometimes a "bad" movie will give you a better chuckle than a supposed intentional comedy (Baby Mama, love Tina Fey but that was hard to watch).

Well, its good to know that there's another film aficionado in the house.

Next time you watch Book of Eli, look for the movie poster for "A Boy and His Dog" in the background of the room he's staying in at Gary Oldman's place. :) I liked it, as a nod to another post-apocalyptic movie that is all but unknown.

"It seems to me like the movie business ain't doin' so good...so many heavyweights are showing up on TV who I'm used to seeing only in the movies. Holly Hunter, McDonnel, Jeff Goldblum and others all getting their own shows. Makes it feel like the steady paycheck these days is in TV, rather than movies..."

Hey Niki2,

What's happening to these and other actors who onced ruled on the silver screen, is that Hollywood is going in the direction of the new market - namely the teens to under 50 crowd. The actors you mentioned can no longer get lead roles as they once did.

It's the nature of business in H-wood. It's all about Twilight this and 3D that. Very few really good quality movies, with one exception, Chris Nolan. Well, maybe Clint Eastwood, and even he, as a H-wood heavyweight, must really need to pull strings.

Imagine, M. Night Shyamalan got $150 million to make Last Airbender. So far it's made close to $100 million in the 3 weeks it's been out. The Back-Up Plan with Jennifer Lopez (once a solid actress) with a $35M budget has made $37M but it took 12 weeks to get there.

What am I getting at. Money, bottom line. The new trend is 3D and young stars that the kids want to see. Miley Cyrus' The Last Song (which did not get good reviews) has made almost $63M and the budget was only $20M (it's been oout about 3 months). So yeah, there's gonna be a sequel.

So those actors are going to where they can work, and right now it's TV.

I have friends who insist that A Boy and His Dog is the only valid argument that Don Johnson should be allowed to live. As the only film helmed by LQ Jones, I also think it exposes his talents, mostly hidden with his stereotypic castings.

For Ben Kingsley, his Suspect Zero would have been challenging, he did amazingly well, although I expect the material is too far overhead for most to get - I was actually surprised the subject made it to the big screen. And no, Niki2, I don't expect you to get it, no need to watch.

Although not a juicy role for Mary, Sneakers was a major pic with all-star cast and was effectively her follow up to her breakout Dances role - a large film to help cement her presense in castings, a critical step to successful acting career.

And the greater objection to Jane Fonda was not political, but the fact she used enemy guns to kill U.S. servicemen in combat, and she facilitated the executions of American POWs during her support of the Communists, traitorous acts against America. Treason is not the same as politics, although the liberals will try to convince you it is.

Somehow I always thought that Grand Canyon gave Mary McDonnell a more significant role following her solid performance in Dances, but your right about Sneakers.

As for Jane Fonda, I know very little about her stupidity regarding the Viet Nam war, except that she very publicly and foolishly supported the VC at a time when we needed to support our troops. Sometimes actors amaze me with their lack of brains.

While the accusation is bunk, lemme ask you this.

So what if she *HAD* ?

Consider well that some of my ancestors risked treason charges in a time when the US was actively supporting Franco, a murderous fucking facist, via the ironically-named Lincoln Brigade, neh ?

But consider also this, all the times WE have been the jackboot, or the sumbitches behind one, Pinochet, Franco, Noriega, Peron, The Shah, Saddam, Papa Doc, Batista, so *many* others, look into the history of the fruit wars, and the contras, and all of that mess - and you will find a lot of american "advisors" or troops involved.

Do you really think we should "support the troops" when they're doin shit like Phoenix did in Vietnam, committing deliberate atrocities, war crimes, wholesale slaughter of entire villages, terror tactics, which COIN *did* use in Afghanistan, which the Dirty 3rd *did* use in Fallujah.

"As a nation we need to support..." NO!
How bout this for ya, fuck the troops - I'm sorry, I thought we'd already answered the question of "just following orders" at Nueremburg, did we not ?

That idiotic, knee-jerk, blind nationalistic loyalty, that my country right or wrong shit, that VALIDATES the fucking atrocities, and encourages more, and lets us just keep goin down that road, considering that those troops see controlling *us* the same way as a potential, damn near inevitable, mission objective.

Would you continue to "support the troops" if they went committing those kind of deeds in Oakland, Los Angelos, Detroit ?

Would you ?

So why is it "ok" to do that shit to others, why should you support what you KNOW to be wrong ?

I'm a serious hardass about this, cause one of the things that caused my own break with the military is that I *was* willing to fire blue-on-blue over this, I *would* fire on my own to stop an atrocity, to stop the knowing and willful abuse of american citizens.
(See Also: Twentynine Palms Survey, et. al.)

Do you really think, if the State Dept decided to declare RAWA a terrorist org as a sop to Kharazi and his goons, and I was still in my prime and at one of those schools when some platoon of US Infantry decided to destroy the place I would not make an issue of it, that I would not fire on them just because of the colors they're flying ?

There is NO flag large enough to cover the murder of innocents - and that the VC were every bit as guilty of the same is NO FUCKING EXCUSE.

If "the troops" want my support, they can very well find it in themselve to not take part in such acts, to ground arms and have the courage to say No Sir! I will NOT obey that order! - and I got as much or more right to feel that way than most because I've fucking DONE it, what do you think I was in the brig *for* when they decided to change my assigned mission instead of booting me ?
Quote:

"Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world - "No, you move.""
— Captain America

I swear, every time I hear that support-the-troops bit of tripe I am pointedly reminded of abused spouses or children making excuses for their abusers, who won't cut the chain because they cannot find it in themselves to admit that they placed their faith in someone who should not have it - and this is the same goddamn thing on a national scale, which if continued, will eventually result in americans looking down the gun barrels of their own military, while other blinded, deluded, foolish americans cheer them on...

Till THEIR turn comes.

You know something Frem, I'm ashamed to admit this but I was actually repeating the populist answer of the day rather than using my brain.

"But consider also this, all the times WE have been the jackboot, or the sumbitches behind one, Pinochet, Franco, Noriega, Peron, The Shah, Saddam, Papa Doc, Batista, so *many* others, look into the history of the fruit wars, and the contras, and all of that mess - and you will find a lot of american "advisors" or troops involved."

I remember learning about our involvement with those dictators. I also remember learning about Pedro Albizu Campos, a Puerto Rican patriot, who studied here in the U.S., and actually believed the bill of goods he was sold regarding the 'benevolence' of the U.S. He fought for independence for Puerto Rico and was summarily jailed, like a common criminal, for his efforts.

I am a man. I can step up and admit when I've made a mistake. One thing is true though, I really don't know enough about Jane Fonda.

You know, that up there is prolly the politest calling of "bullshit!" I have ever heard, and imma be less polite.

I call bullshit!

Of course, being by now quite drunk, polite ain't likely to happen, especially what with being bitched at by someone technically not old enough to knock em back - not that it matters cause if she did with that weight and metabolism it'd be giggle, giggle, thump in like a minute anyway.

Seriously, I just pointed out that if she did it's not like I care too much, but lemme rip your claim to shreds cause the rum is stokin the furnace of my grinning hostility to jackboots and you just happen to be an easy target in range.

The gun in question is a manually cranked ANTI AIRCRAFT GUN, which means it's no fucking threat to any bloody thing but maybe a DC3 or a C130 flying at the edge of a stall, even a shithook could outrun it's traverse for heavens sake, and it's not fired by hand but a foot pedal if I recall correctly, not to mention the shells themselves explode in the freakin air, either at presets or on a default timer so ya don't hit folks on the ground because anyone in range of such a high angle lob is likely one of your guys, and trying to pass that piece of shit off as an artillery piece is both laugable and insulting to anyone who knows any bloody thing about the hardware at the time - besides which even the dumbest VC grunt would never have let an american, no matter how sympathetic, near enough to operate any piece of viable military hardware after the atrocities committed by the Phoenix teams, since by then it was pretty clear we'd spend our people even quicker and with less qualms than they would, after all, we could just conscript more from any ghetto in america, right ?

Say what you want about the VC, they didn't have to stick a gun in their back to get THEIR troops to fight, cause they actually gave a shit about what they were doing (whether or not they had any real clue what their leaders intentions were is immaterial) as opposed to our troops, forced to throw down their lives unwillingly for LBJ's world domination games and the agendas of fuckheads who didn't give a shit about them save as a resource to be used, some of which thought it a fine idea to get our "undesirables" killed and dragged this shit out for that very reason.

And maybe when the troops get tired of "just following orders" and realize they in truth have all the value of a used kleenex to the powers that be, and happen to be quite rightfully scorned and distrusted by large segments of the population thanks in great part to that willingness to "just follow orders" even when americans are the target (or did you not see the 82nd backing up arms confiscation in New Orleans, you blind partisan fuck ?) maybe they will wake up to the fact that rather than defending freedom, for the most part they've been stomping on it for a hundred and fifty years, and every time they've tried to hold the Gov to all those bullshit promises all they get is a kick in the teeth - ask the bonus marchers about that one, or did it somehow escape you that MacArthur and Patton "make their bones" by stomping american veterans into the fucking dirt ?

I'll respect the troops when they are respectable, and not before - so long as they are the deluded, ignorant, and willing arm of tyranny, the bullets in tyrannys gun willing to be expended without a thought to the target or the mission, and the potential to be someday aimed at us, the very people they claim to be protecting, in much the same fashion...

The troops can kiss my ass.

How many current 50-60 year-olds who hate Jane Fonda for her actions in 1972 actually LOVED her in 1972? Count me in there! C'mon, we were All anti-war and very Liberal then; at least everyone I knew was. The anti-war fervor was at a high, and people like Fonda became icons for the young.

Don't forget that the majority of the war dead in Vietnam happened under NIXON's watch. And he ran on a platform of getting us out of Vietnam, and then upped the ante and doubled down once he was in office, and it took 'til well into his second term to finally admit that it was a lost cause and get the fuck out.

Or, as Michael Steele would no doubt agree, "Vietnam was a war of Nixon's choosing."

Nixon considered taking legal action against her, but he chose not to. He didn't want to further fracture the country, and he had his own problems distracting him at the time.

In other words, you admit that you have such a hard-on for Fonda that you'll resort to making shit up in the vain hopes that it will stick, huh?

Personally, I never could stand her, but that was just because I didn't care for her acting or her movies. Or her fitness tapes.

And when you say Nixon didn't take action, are you suggesting racism on his part? He didn't take action against her because she's WHITE? Is that what you're saying? 'Cause if you flip forward to today, the righties sure as hell maintain that any black person not prosecuted by the Obama DOJ ( or even the Bush DOJ) confirms racism on Obama's part.

So you're saying Nixon protected her because she was white, right?

Ummmmmm... Hate to break it to you, but Barbarella really is a terrible movie. It's badly made, has really no plot, and is nothing more than a chance to Ms. Fonda to bounce her boobies. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but that isn't "acting", and it's not a good movie. I like tits as much as the next guy, but if I want porn, I'll just go ahead and watch PORN, instead of watching cheesey softcore porn masquerading as a mainstream movie.

I've never actually watched Barbarella all the way through, because I find it insipid corn-porn aimed at 13-year-olds. Sorry to hear you're still stuck in your adolescence.

Oh lord! And next you'll be talking smack about Heavy Metal the Movie! (The original, of course.) Hey - there's room in everyone's day for some cheesy pseudo-porn aimed at 13 year olds.

I admit, I'm fond of both movies, though I'm not at all drawn to bouncing boobies and I thoroughly concede the crap level. I find Barberella's costumes and kitsch highly entertaining, and Heavy Metal has an excellent soundtrack.

Jongsie, there's lots and lots of free porn on the internet. Maybe you should look it up sometime. You don't need Jane Fonda movies to jerk off to - there's actual REAL porn available for free now!

And while you're at it, see if you can dig up any valid cites for that ludicrous claim of yours about Ms. Fonda shooting U.S. soldiers. I know you don't want to, but I've asked twice now, and you DID make that claim, after all...

I haven't posted one word about Fonda shooting any guns. You are mixed up, as usual. Also, you're the one who said Barbarella was porn, not me. So once again you show me and the world you're just an idiot who has no idea, and doesn't care who he is insulting at the time. A pathetic loser who has not changed in years; just stuck on being a juvenile jackass.

Kaneman, if I was to agree with you, then Kwicko might attack me for no other reason than I was agreeing with you. It means so much more to me when I post neutral stuff and still get attacked by the Liberals here. They are conditioned to fight and attack. They cannot be reasonable. That's where you come in. We all have a place.

Well Kwick,

I just had to come down from my mountain to inform you and the ignorant masses of what you are doing... golden calf and all of that...

No wonder you are all addicted to power and have a "superiority complex".

Its fun.

Says the "person" who claims that anyone who doesn't believe in HIS gods "fails".

You say you believe in people, in our ability to overcome - and when I say that's what I hold to be the greatest power on Earth, you say that's why I fail.

So believing in people, in their ability to overcome, is failure in your book. Good to know.

Let me know when you're done with all that "superiority". Seems a shame you had to come down from on high to let us all know we're acting superior and godlike, when it's clear you hold that as YOUR sole right and power, what with you being all superior and godlike, and us just being poor, ignorant masses. ;)
