No, REALLY?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn my heightened intelligence and high capacity to smell political bullshit...

However...

IF you were the Demos in charge, and saw a fucking tsunami coming.... wouldn't you move out of the way?

Heh. They just sacrificed the NAACP, in order to try and gain some higher ground.

Wow.

Even the NACCP is backing off.

People, the movement has TEETH.

Good.

The T-party dumped Williams and so Biden - kind of like O's secretary - said some nice stuff in return. It's just politicking - don't be fooled so quickly. Be greedy and ask for more.

Just putting it out there for consumption.

I doubt very much this will be the last word from the administration on the issue of the Tea Party.

Of course not.

Im fucking pissed off that the movement thru the Express under the bus (heh, see what I did there?) to gain some clout... but whatever, the NON-VIOLENT revolution keeps going.

And for those paying attention... this NON-VIOLENT movement, its lucky, and for your benefit.

Do I really have to spell out what would happen if we got tired of playing nice?

Oh, Wulf, I wish you'd stop threatening...you don't realize that you don't speak for any large majority of people, much as I know you'd like to think you do. And it's a good thing you don't, because the other thing you don't realize is that wholesale revolt wouldn't help thing, it would make it worse. It just sounds exciting.

Nobody's "playing nice" now, if you hadn't noticed. The world will go on...and armed revolt isn't necessary, nor will it probably happen. The MAJORITY of Americans have lives to lead and realize taking arms up against their government would do their own lives, and all those around them, more harm than good.

As to Biden: I realize those on the right here don't want to recognize or acknowledge it, but few, if any--and NONE here--are saying the Tea Party IS A RACIST ORGANIZATION. The point is trying to be made that there are racist elements in the Tea Party--which I'm not going to debate because I already posted enough FACTS to show it's true.

Many people would like the Tea Party to distance itself from THOSE PARTS, there it is in a nutshell. Nothing more.

I know it's easier to see black and white: "Obama and the Dems claim the whole Tea Party is racist!" -- "There are absolutely zero racists in the Tea Party". But reality lies in between.

I wish you could read up about the Express...it was a fake from the beginning, trying to make hay off the Tea Party; it wasn't even what you SHOULD want as part of your political group. There are those here who can give you better facts and cites than I am willing to look up now to show you.

The Tea Party, at the same time, didn't throw them under the bus; they responded in a very realistic way to Williams having put them in an untenable place, putting something out there which was guaranteed to shock most people and which was unquestionably racist. Whatever else they did, trying to defend him would have been deleterious to their aims, weakened their power, and distanced potential voters.

But none of that matters, because when you said there were "racist elements" amongst the tea-baggers, all THEY heard was "The tea-baggers are racists!"

Joe Biden is, of course, 100% correct. He didn't throw the NAACP under any bus, but rather reiterated and confirmed their point, as did the Tea Party movement itself, in giving Tea Party Express chairman Mark Williams the old heave-ho. In other words, they danced to the tune that the NAACP sang.

How's that taste, tea-baggers?

Our local Party of Tea Whiners seem to have a hard time hearing this. It messes with their image as poor, pitiful, helpless, put upon victims.

Yeah, Rappy and Wulfy (and others) missed the point from get go: the NAACP condemned RACIST ELEMENTS WITHIN THE TEA PARTY. That's it. Check the wording of the resolution boys, and show me if I'm wrong.

ETA: oops, Mike already made my point. Well, it certainly can't be made enough, since the duo of dimwits can't seem to hear it right.

Well. I guess that leaves a non-violent overthrow of the current order of being.

See how easy it could have been. Imagine:

"It is a sad reality that, no matter the strides that have been made in the past decades, there remain elements of our great American society that cannot leave the inequalities of the past in the past. In times of political unrest, when new voices speak out to challenge the existing leadership, it is an unfortunate truth that some individuals will take advantage of the opportunity to bring their biases to the forefront.

"Those who taint the message of the Tea Party movement with their racism and bigotry not only hinder us in our quest for smaller government and greater individual freedom, but they act directly against our goals. And so I stand before you today to unequivocally state that any discrimination based on race, gender, or sexual orientation is unwelcome in the Tea Party. I hope that all of our members are active in keeping the focus of our movement where it needs to be, so that we can achieve our true aims in November..."

Why couldn't anyone have said something like that weeks, months ago? Why's it so hard? Yee-haw Tea Party! Yee-haw freedom and the America way! Yee-hew acceptance of ALL potential members, and focus on what they CLAIM to be their issues...

The fact that I could write that up in 2 minutes, yet no Tea Partiers did, speaks volumes to me. Maybe "discrimination based on race, gender, or sexual orientation is unwelcome in the Tea Party" would not have been a true statement, and that's why it wasn't said?

Tea Party Express stands behind Mark Williams on response to NAACP racism resolution

Quote:

A leader of the Tea Party Express (TPX) says the Tea Party Federation was wrong to banish one of TPX’s highest-profile activists, Mark Williams, for what have been described as racially insensitive actions.

Williams and the Tea Party Express were expelled from the federation after Williams came under attack for a satirical response to the NAACP’s resolution last week condemning racist elements of the Tea Party movement. The satirical piece mocked NAACP leader Ben Jealous in a “letter” to President Abraham Lincoln, and was used by critics to say Williams is a racist.

Joe Wierzbicki, a founding member of TPX, told The Daily Caller in an e-mail that the federation was “wrong.”

“Circular firing squads of groups within the Tea Party movement attacking one another accomplish nothing, and on this issue the Tea Party Federation was wrong, and enabled and empowered the NAACP’s racist attacks on the Tea Party movement,” Wierzbicki said.

He said it’s no big deal that TPX, which has been a very visible organization in the grassroots movement, was expelled too. “We’re really not concerned by it,” he said. “The Tea Party Express with over 400,000 members is far larger than the Tea Party Federation’s entire membership.”

Hunh. So these two main groups of what's supposedly a huge, game-changing organization have a membership of maybe 400,000 + 300,000 = 700,000 out of a population of 308 million. That's 0.2% or 2/1000th of the population.

I guess we can give them credit for being very squeaky wheels to get so much attention on themselves, though perhaps they don't realize how many people are laughing at them, not with them. I remain skeptical of what they'll accomplish in Nov, especially if they remain short on actual ideas and long on vindictive insanity.

It's a shame. I wasn't against the idea when this whole thing started. They might have done something useful, if they'd been based in something more than hate.

Just wondering when they're going to condemn the racist elements within the Democratic party, or the Republican party, or among the Independents.

Singling out possible racist elements only within the Tea Party and asking for the Tea Party leadership to repudiate them is a clever piece of political theater because there are a lot of folks of all political persuasions who will read it as "The Tea Party is Racist". Also, there's not really any unified national Tea Party leadership, so there's no one group which can act on the accusations.

Mawl4, you should be a public speaker. Or speechwriter. This isn’t the first time you’ve written something concise and eloquent which sums it up n a nutshell. However, I don’t think the Tea Party would have gone for part of it, that “sexual orientation” thing probably would have offended quite few of them. I think a more politic way to have said it would be ‘And so I stand before you today to unequivocally state that any discrimination based on race OR AYNYTHINGELSE is unwelcome in the Tea Party. But the more I think about it, the more I think I can guess some of the possible reasons why they never came out and said anything like that. Not the majority, but enough of the Tea Partiers, from what I’ve heard/seen, DO have discrimination aspects, be it for homosexuals, poor people, blacks, immigrants or something else. So:

-rhetoric riles people up. As long as they’re free to use code words which subconsciously appeal to people’s baser feelings; it works. What would undoubtedly look like caving in doesn’t work so well (look already here).

-“See how unfairly they’re characterizing us” riles people up. They already believe they are fighting against the status quo and are underdogs for it; it works.

-there ARE racist elements alive among Tea Partiers (remember the “literacy test” thing which was applauded, and there are many more. To decry them publicly; well, they want everyone they can garner, whatever their views or however extreme, they’ve shown that; it works.

-Even admitting it exists makes them look weak. They want to see themselves as the True Patriots, Real Americans, so even admitting it is bad; it doesn’t work.

-Being able to cry “reverse racism!” and “racism!” against everyone ELSE is a way of avoiding the problems with their issues. If they admit/decry racism, they lose that tactic; it doesn’t work.

Those would be my guesses, there are probably more.

As to the TPE, thank you DT.

I was hoping you’d chime in with some illumination about the fact that the TPE is a “fake front” in a way, someone (GOP?) using the Tea Party for their own agenda—I posted long ago about who funds the TPE...don’ wanna go back and dig it up, but it’s not the REAL PEOPLE who have REAL GRIPES with things, it’s not and never has been grass roots. It’s been CAPITALIZING on the TP and the grass-roots movement, but not of it.

I have no doubt as to their numbers, Mike...flash always gets attention. However, how many of those 400,000 know what the TPE IS? Or have they been pulled in by the flash and the “Tea Party” name, not knowing what’s behind it? I do find the TPE’s retaliation strange in a way, given they want to USE the Tea Party movement. But maybe they feel they have garnered enough support that they can rival the various other TP groups and incorporate their members. Certainly those offended by the TPF denouncing them might move over...

Mike, why are you seeing a change in partisanship in DT? To me he bounces back and forth between stuff according to what he sees, rather than ever having been solidly on one side or another. Am I missing something? Besides, if he’s giving good information to help people see what’s really what, that’s a good thing, isn’t it?

Yes, Mal4, in the very beginning they MIGHT have done something useful. I’m afraid I never had any hope, tho’; right off they seemed very much on the fringe, and it was immediately apparent they didn’t understand what they wanted or wanted to stand for, they had so many mixed messages and their message seemed to be mostly about hating Obama, not issues per se. Then it became more about hating MANY things, tho’ primarily Obama, and their rhetoric got so hateful it was pretty obvious they’d only attract those who are angry and scared, but don’t quite know who to blame for the state of the country. It’s a shame.

Sorry Geezer; whatever the legislative or other actions of other parties may be, the apperance and wording of the Tea Party has had the most visible racism of anyone, and they have gotten more attention than anyone, so they get called on it. I have no doubt there's racism in every party, but they're not as overt about it, so it's only natural the TP would pick up the condemnation.

They ARE also a vocal minority; while the Repubs have been accused of racism, they're big, they're powerful and it's probably impolitic to officially call them on it. Politics.

Biden is still a dimwitt

I was gonna ask just when Biden got any credibility with anyone, about anything, in the Tea Party movement, but you just answered.

Hey, is it MY fault if the average tea-bagger can't read?

By the way, you might have missed it, but I *DID* call out the racist idiots of the "New Black Panther Party". I can see how you might have missed that, since acknowledging it would kinda deflate your "poutrage" about it now...

I don't miss Robert Byrd, and I doubt many Democrats do. Of course, unlike the racist elements among the tea-baggers (I can't call them the Tea Party, because you claim there IS no "Tea Party" as such, so I'll have to call them tea-baggers, which is what they called themselves at the outset), Byrd actually repudiated (not "refudiated" ) his own racist past. Maybe more of the tea-baggers and Republicans should emulate those actions and words of his.

Yup, admitting it exists makes them look weak, and denying it makes them look even more crazy and out of touch than ever. So they decided to get stuck on crazy.

Which is a perfectly good explanation as to why Biden should clarify it, to counter that assumption. Thank you.

LOL! Heavens no I couldn't be a public speaker. Not about politics. I can talk about physics all day, and a few other things, but politics no. I'm sure could write speeches though. String together a bunch of pretty generalizations, pile on the B, and add plenty of S.

Yeah, I knew the "sexual orientation" part would be completely unacceptable. I included it just for the pure surrealism. Kind of makes a point - the fact that someone cannot openly say they welcome homosexuals proves where they stand, huh? Do they even try to deny this one?

You're right about the rhetoric. Even if the Tea Party is not generally racist, I think they've intentionally let some bad messaging go because they need to stir up all that subconscious anger. Just look at what it's done to Wulfie. He'd hand out over his firstborn to the TP, he's so grateful to them. They've given him someone to blame, and permission to vent his hate and anger at them. (Really shouldn't drink and post, Wulfie.)

Ain't that the truth! You can see this alive and well even on this site. It's Rappy's MO, as well as a few others, to push at people's buttons until they turn around and smack him, then he goes crying "No fair!". I wonder if he's like that in real life.

Funny, because the ONLY folks around here who read it that way are you right-wingnuts. The rest of us understand that saying there are racist elements in the tea-bagging ranks means that THERE ARE RACIST ELEMENTS IN THE TEA-BAGGING RANKS.

I'm really sorry y'all can't read. Blame it on your shitty non-public education!

Anyway - here's my new theory with the Tea Party, which came out of my exploration of old threads. Just after the 2008 elections, someone (signym?) starting a thread about a meeting the upper level Repubs held within days after they lost so badly. A super secret planning meeting, apparently. Who wants to bet that the "grass roots" Tea Party movement and the Party of No came out of that?

Maybe not the specifics, but the Repubs, after getting spanked so badly, had to recognize that they needed a "grass roots" movement to counter Obama's successful campaign, and they also needed a theme to organize around as a minority in Congress. [ETA: the "socialist agenda" was likely another facet of this, since the line had gotten such traction during the elections.] Of course, they had to use the Republican machine to plan and fund the "grass roots" uprising, and the Congressional battle has been working directly against the economic recovery and the interests of the American people. It was all about getting back in power, which shows. The cracks in the supposed movement are showing.

Not that there aren't some Teabaggers who truly and honestly believe in what they're doing. But I think they've been played.

BTW, interesting stuff about the TPE. I hadn't known about the factions, and how they're splintering. Really, I'm feeling more and more that November is going to be a slap in the face for folks who still haven't figured out why they got slapped in 2006 and 2008.

Oh, good, I'm glad I checked this thread before going. Because that was excellent!

No, I don't blame you for not want to be a public speaker, but you not only have an excellent grasp of language, you also have (even more rare) the ability to cut to the core, see reality, and express it clearly and concisely (at the last of which I am particularly pathetic). You would write GREAT speeches!

What you write here is clear and eloquent, you see, but it's obvious you're speaking reality; use that same talent and grasp of English to manipulate, many, you could rule the world (or at least the Republican party, and probably the Dems too!).

Yes, it does show where they stand (the racist thing does too, but we've done that to death). They no doubt don't dispute the homosexuality thing because it doesn't get press or attention; I'd be willing to bet they'd try to deny that one too if it came to it...which would be truly hysterical!

And yes, too, sigh... of all the RWAs here, Wulf is the saddest to me, because it's not all spite with him, it's blindness, and I wonder what he'd be like if he'd just take the blinders off...

Such is life. Thank you for ending today on a high note for me. I'm outta here...Eeep, just looked at my watch, I've JUST got time to make it to my physical therapy appointment! Perfect timing!

Mal4, found yours just as I was leaving, wanted sooo bad to read it but I'd have been late so I waited until I got back.

I think that's a very astute conclusion. Certainly the "party of no" thing was probably cooked up then, and given Obama had such enormous luck with grass roots stuff, it would make sense that they'd try to utilize the concept.

I agree with pretty much all you said. And it IS a damned shame, if that's the case! An honest movement based on the issues at the supposed core could have made some important changes in our government. Oh well.

Last night, listening to the Repubs say "tax cuts don't have to be paid for" directly opposite HW Bush calling Reagonomics "Voo Doo Economics" and people in his own party saying it doesn't work and tax cuts do add to the deficit, then listening to them argue against extension of unemployment, which has been passed by them without a question previously, I began to wonder if some of the pundits aren't right: Are the Repubs deliberately trying to drive this country into the ground in order to win in 2012??? I mean, no, I wouldn't put it past them, but my gawd, what a HIDEOUS thing to do, if so!!!

It just boggles my mind that any group of people would deliberately do something like that just to regain power... okay, so maybe I'm naive, but it still does...
