This is a kick:

Oh, I do love the drama of our Congress. I do agree with him, but it's always somewhat amusing to see one of them go off.
Quote:

Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner was raging Thursday night on the House floor after it became clear that Republicans had enough votes to defeat a bill that provided health care to 9/11 first responders.

Democratic leaders made a motion to suspend the rules, a maneuver that prevented Republicans from offering amendments to the widely popular James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

In a dramatic one-and-a-half minute speech, the New York congressman excoriated Republicans for mounting their opposition to the bill's passage on their inability to offer amendments to it.

"It's Republicans wrapping their arms around Republicans rather than doing the right thing on behalf of the heroes," Weiner said. "It is a shame. A shame! If you believe this is a bad idea to provide health care–then vote no! But don't give me the cowardly view that 'Oh if it was a different procedure'…"

Republican Rep. Peter King, also of New York, drew fire from Weiner when he tried to interject midway through the Democrat's tirade.

"The gentleman gets up and yells, trying to intimidate people into believing he's right–he is wrong!" Weiner shouted. "The gentleman is wrong! The gentleman is providing cover for his colleagues rather than doing the right thing!"

I LIKED THAT!"...how do you defend them, Wulf, for leaving HEROES out in the cold?

I so like the circus of Congress.

That has nothing to do with the issue, Wulf--wasn't even a good try.

Still waiting to see you defend the Repubs for voting against giving TRUE heroes healthcare...given your love of heroes, here are some REAL ones, or don't even real heroes count against your partisan jihad?

They're not real heroes because they weren't in some silly costume when they were saving people. Plus, they didn't kill anybody. You can only be a hero if you're killing folks in Wulfie World.

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

The bill could have easily passed with a simple majority of the Democrats hadn't tried to make it amendment-proof.

I've seen some suggestion that the Democrats wanted to do it this way, and have it fail, so they wouldn't have to vote for more spending. For example:

Quote:

One of the measure's key supporters, U.S. Rep. Peter King, a Long Island Republican, said that would almost guarantee that the bill would fail, in part because it would block Republicans from proposing amendments.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg called the vote an "outrage." He said it was clearly a tactic designed to stall the bill, which has raised concerns because of high cost, even though many members of Congress claim to support the measure.

"This is a way to avoid having to make a tough decision," Bloomberg said, adding that the nation owes more to "the people who worked down at 9/11 whose health has fallen apart because they did what America wanted them to do."

Cuda: hee, hee, hee, thanx. That explains it. Sill me.

Geezer: you may be right; I'd hate to believe it, but stranger things have happened in politics. I do hope you're wrong, tho'. I'd like to know more, like what kind of amendments Republicans wanted to add.

And if that's the case, why didn't the Republicans call their bluff and accept the "no-amendment" bit? It would have made the Dems look really stupid then if they hadn't voted for it...this way, it makes the Republicans look bad. So why not make 'em ante up, if that's the truth?

Exactly my thought Cuda. To Wulf, folks aren't heroes unless they're on the big screen with really good lighting and a blaring heroic soundtrack. French horns and all.

In Wulffantasyland, the heroes don't need health care, because all they ever get is a shoulder wound (the sexy kind: a bunch of blood and a manly grimace of pain that makes all the females swoon over his macho heroicness.) We all know that shoulder wounds heal perfectly by the next episode.

ANTHONYT

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I think the Republicans were foolish for rejecting the Bill.

I think the Democrats were foolish for changing normal procedures, thus putting the Bill in greater jeopardy.

I don't think either group of representatives actually expressed much tangible concern for the heroes of 9/11.

This feels like shameful political maneuvers and counter-maneuvers by both sides, with our nation's heroes caught in the middle.

I checked it out. Apparently the Dems tried to put it through under the procedure that doesn't add amendments because they got a sniff that the Republicans were going to tack on a bunch of amendments to stall it and hopefully make it so the Dems wouldn't vote for it. The Republicans used the change in procedure to one that doesn't allow amendments.

I don't know what the Repubs had up their sleeves and I don't really care. If the bill was about healthcare for the first responders of 9/11, why would you vote against it just 'cuz you couldn't tag amendments on? What difference does it make? The bill ITSELF is what's important, so either vote for it or against it on its merits. Isn't that what they're supposed to do?

Blows my mind how anyone can excuse the Repubs on this one. What if the'd let amendments be tagged on and the Repubs added a whole lot of bad amendments? Should the Dems have voted for it anyway? WOULD the Repubs have voted for it even if they got all their amendments? They apparently said they'd have voted FOR it if it were under regular procedure. Do you really believe that??

It costs money. That is, purely and simply, half the reason they wanted to kill it. The other half is they'll about die before they go along with anything the Dems try to do.

For me, this one is a simple black and white: if it's about healthcare for the first responders, it doesn't need any amendments, it should be passed. STILL waiting to hear Wulfie defend the right's actions with regard to TRUE heroes...
