a) It's already been shown in another thread quite capably that Fannie and Freddie, while they CONTRIBUTED to the problem, were not the main cause.

b) The question is "hard earned", which in more cases than not, isn't valid. Most of the gap in haves and have-nots, or "have-lesses", if you will, has come about via collusion with boards of directors, manipulation of the economy and control of/connivance with the government. If it were "earned", the division of earnings wouldn't be so huge.

c) No, SSI is what I paid into for over 30 years; my husband and I will probably be among the last to get some of it back, because it's been steadily raided by the government (mostly Republicans). If it had been handled properly, those after us would get their fair share back, too, upon which to live in their old age. We also have retirement funds; between them and Jim still working (at 72), we get by.
