Fox News gets front row White House seat after shakeup
Aug 2 11:38 AM US/Eastern

Fox News has won a front-row seat in the White House press room after the shakeup following the retirement of the longest-serving journalist in the presidential residence, the correspondents association said Monday.

The White House Correspondents Association agreed to move the Associated Press to the front row, center seat, which had been held by Helen Thomas, who retired in June at age 89 after coming under fire for controversial remarks about Israel.

The new arrangement allowed the conservative Fox News to snag the front row seat previously occupied by AP. National Public Radio got the second row seat previously held by Fox, next to Bloomberg News.

"It was a very difficult decision," said the association, which is a self-governing body of the correspondents assigned to the White House.

"The board received requests from Bloomberg and NPR in addition to Fox for relocation to the front row and felt all three made compelling cases. But the board ultimately was persuaded by Fox's length of service and commitment to the White House television pool."

The new seating arrangement gives Fox, with its conservative bent, a coveted front-row seat in the press center where daily press briefings from the presidential spokesman are given.

The association also made a series of adjustments to the larger seating chart, including the addition of a new seat for the foreign press pool.

"These deliberations mark the third time in four years the board has tackled this issue, and we urge members to view seating room changes as an ongoing process that will be revisited again as our industry evolves," the group said.

Thomas, who served for decades as the White House correspondent for United Press International (UPI), apologized for the remarks she made about Israel during a May 27 "Jewish Heritage Celebration" at the White House, and then resigned.

Musical chairs, petty politics and a supposedly independant association (WHCA) that's anything but, sounds like business as usual - remember these are the same folk who considered Talon News Service a legitimate outfit and gave them preferential seating.

As for Helen, say whatever else you will, I think it pretty offensive that even questioning our backstabbing, treacherous so-called-ally is off limits, cause NO topic should be, these are our elected leaders and supposed to be accountable to US, the people of america, not some foreign power with a history of espionage, sabotage and political manipulation against us.

Yeah, the Talon thing was outside the scope of the The White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA), I believe.

Talon wasn't so much "given" preferential seating, so much as it was allowed entry into the WH press room.

The WHCA is an independent group of journalist, working outside the scope and control of the White House.

As for Helen, she dug her own grave, and it was long past time for her to go.
