Main article: Rainbow flag (LGBT movement)

The rainbow flag, sometimes called 'the freedom flag', was popularized as a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) pride and diversity by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978. The different colors symbolize diversity in the gay community, and the flag is used predominantly at gay pride events and in gay villages worldwide in various forms including banners, clothing and jewelry. For the 25th Anniversary of the Stonewall riots, held in 1994 in New York city, a mile-long rainbow flag was created and post-parade cut up in sections that have since been used around the world.

Originally created with eight colors, pink and turquoise were removed for production purposes and as of 2008, it consists of six colored stripes, which should always be displayed with red on top or to left. It is most commonly flown with the red stripe on top, as the colors appear in a natural rainbow.[11] Aside from the obvious symbolism of a mixed LGBT community, the colors were designed to symbolize: red (life), orange (healing), yellow (sunlight), green (nature), blue (harmony), and purple/violet (spirit). The removed colors stood for sex (pink) and art/magic (turquoise). Another presumed origin is the song Over the Rainbow, synonymous with gay icon Judy Garland, whose film The Wizard of Oz has often been interpreted as an allegory of gay coming out.

Wizard of Oz... The only thing the Wizard of Oz and homosexuality have in common is that in the book sequels Dorothy goes insane, and electrotherapy was used to "treat" both insane people and homosexuality back then. A famous gay actress was in the movie, but I don't see that the movie was about homosexuality or coming out.

But it also occurs to me this may not be a completely invalid viewpoint, despite my inability to see it. The discrepancy between perspectives is likely an issue of homosexuals and non-homosexuals not sharing the same world view. I wonder, most heterosexuals assume that everyone else is heterosexual unless told otherwise, because this is what they are and therefore are familiar with. Clearly the reverse isn't true for ALL gays and lesbians, but I wonder if for some of them it does influence the world view a little. Maybe humans tend to automatically assume everyone else is actually overtly or secretly like them.

Because right now homosexuality is so stigmatized, and coming out is an important milestone in their life, some gays and lesbians might see symbolism of homosexuality everywhere. People who don't have this frame of reference might see a different milestone important to them everywhere, like a coming of age story.

Sorry, spec.

I see symbolism in the rainbow in that it rejects black-white thinking, too. Figures it originated in SF

I didn't know any of that, Byte, thank you!

Giggle thought crossed my mind when I first saw it: "Maybe all those people who can get married in California now will take it on their honeymoons..." hee, hee, hee.

Where IS that train, PN? Just curious.

Well, yeah - just ask someone left-handed, if you want an example and free fifty cent rant.

But see, you suffer from the same problem most folk like us do - you expect or at least hope for, people to MAKE SENSE - and they don't, really...

So rather than beat your head against a wall, you could just do what I do and choose to assume they're all insane, instead, cause that really does work for me.

Back in the day... "gay" meant happy (and when was the last time you saw a gay person NOT swishing?).

A "faggot" was a bunch of wood (heh... I guess it still is)

And "queer" meant strange (which I guess is still true).

Things stay the same, things change, things are sometimes just funny.

It's also a very common assumption at the base of a Type 1 Jerk Justification.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/JerkJustifications

Type 1: "Kindness is weakness, and Nice Guys Finish Last. If you want to get ahead in this world, you have to be ruthless, mean-spirited, and manipulative."

Heh, it's funny because it's ironic (I mean that in a good way). Though good luck finding anyone who's NOT insane... Or who wants to be.

I agree, Frem: The way the American people vote sometimes shows it (as in Dumbya getting a second term). I've seen far too much too often to convince me otherwise!

Ahh, prejudice at its best. I know MANY gay people who don't swish...worked for two of them, a gay and a lesbian, in a law office. You'd never have known if they didn't tell you. As usual, your opinions reflect only your own experience (and whaddya wanna bet a whole lot of people around you are gay and you can't tell?)

Jeeze, Nix. You really can't see humor in anything can you?

Thats actually kind of sad.

Sometimes, the best way to deal with ridiculousness is to laugh.

That didn't come across as humorous. Maybe I hear those kinds of cracks too often so I'm predisposed to respond to them. If you meant it as a joke, I'll half laugh, okay? It's still an insensitive statement, which, yes, many "jokes" purport to be.

The whole symbolism thing and how folks view images and icons is something I find interesting.

Thinking of the movie, The Da Vinci Code. Image after image is shown, and immediately, we're programmed to think of one thing, based on our own, limited perceptions.

Pretty much how humans operate through out life.
