Hello,

The Republicans were reportedly defeated in their attempt to prevent 'lame duck' legislation. An odd idea, since the duck isn't lame if it's still flying. It seems petty to me, to try and prevent a person's final days on the job from being significant.

I can understand WHY they try these kinds of stunts, from a political standpoint. If someone is voted out, but is still *IN* until the new guy gets sworn in, he can theoretically try to "set us up the bomb", as they say. ;)

Of course, it could be just this kind of thing that could be really freeing for an elected official; if he's got nothing to lose, he just might feel like proposing a really SUBSTANTIAL piece of legislation, the kind that nobody in their right mind would ever propose if they thought they had to run for re-election ever again. Third-rail kinda stuff, y'know?

Of course, you'd need an awful lot of lame ducks for such legislation to ever have anything close to a chance of passing...

That's one of the biggest drivers behind the idea of term limits. Take away someone's need to be re-elected, and you take away their fear of doing the right thing AND you free up their time to actually DO shit instead of having to spend all their time fundraising to run for re-election. It's not without its merits.

Lame duck, schmame duck! Whatever anti-American, anti-Capitalism, anti-Freedom bullshit the badly defeated Pelosi/Reid cocksucker Dems pass between November and January will be Gone With The Wind soon enough. Or perhaps one or two of the defeated Dems will grow a conscience out of their guilt, ponder the tremendous damage they've done to America by voting in unison with Socialists, and refuse to rubber-stamp any more Obama/Pelosi bills.

Of course - just repeal and replace everything! Hey, it worked with everything Bush did, right?

Decide we don't want to be involved in an illegal war? Just repeal the authorization of force, and we're magically not involved anymore! Decide we don't like the Patriot Act? Boom - it's gone! Don't like torture? Wish it away!

Sadly, it's not *quite* that easy to undo laws and Executive Orders, despite what the uneducated morons on the right would like you to believe. They are running on a "Government for Dummies" strategy, hoping their base are too stupid to figure things out.

And their base is eating it up, clearly showing how ignorant they are.

Oh, by the way Mr. Shipping Clerk genius, you failed to take note and correct Niki-bitch's spelling error above. She typed gaul when it should have been gall. So either your big brain missed that mistake, or you don't care about spelling when one of your liberal pals, like the nymph of the woods is wrong.

Or its perils either, remember just how MUCH sabotage Engler managed to pull off en route to the door when we finally booted his ass, and rejected his fair haired boy for Jenny...

And we've STILL not recovered from it.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I heard it was because they feared the Dms would try an energy bill, which is ridiculous; that's dead in the water. OR that they might try to do something about gay marriage or DADT. I think they fear just about anything the Dems might do, so with their belief they'll take over a majority in House and Senate ( ) of COURSE they want to stop ANYONE from doing something which might follow their conscience!

Given our only hope of someone acting according to our conscience is in a lame-duck session, I vote for a SINGLE-TERM term limit. Who's with me? That way EVERYONE would be a lame duck, and maybe we could get something DONE!

By the way, voting one's conscience isn't ignoring the will of the people--remember the majority of Americans wanted a publc option. It didn't make it and what we got pretty much sucks, but if they'd voted "the will of the people", we'd have it.

Voting one's consciense is usually not done because of the need for re-election, the need to tow the mark of the party, the need to please lobbyists, etc. Lame ducks might fix all of those but the last one anyway...

Hi Lightbringer, I'm Niki. Haven't been around much the past couple of days. But don't worry about it, River and a couple of others look for any chance to go after me; it means nothing. I wouldn't even have noticed because I don't read their posts, but I read yours.

Going after a typo is pretty common around here...although going after at typo on on thread in yet another thread...well, it's new but it's all of a piece. They just can't reist.

Nice to meet you.
