Damn straight. Yes, I adore Carlin, too...a wicked brain with no compunction about telling it like it is. Once again, comedians can get away with SO much stuff politicians can’t; and once again, we need two jesters, one for each party, who get to tell their jokes ON CAMERA as soon as the Congressmen and Senators leave the House and Senate. Wouldn’t that be FUN? To hear their idiocy put in REAL terms right after they said it? Gawd, I’d love it!
Quote:

The poor are there...just to scare the shit out of the middle class
Oh, gawd, he’s awesome, I agree.

I didn’t know he died, dammit. And yes, he would have LOVED any joke anyone could make about his death!

Oh, GREAT one, Story. Do you think history will ever admit he was senile while still in office? And Nancy was actually running the country? I’ve never forgotten Robin Williams’ line “Blaming Reagan for the state of the country is like blaming Ronald McDonald for the state of your hamburger”.

Don’t forget Carlin in Dogma:

It’s not funny, but I LOVE this:

“When you’re born into this world, you’re born into a freak show. When you’re born in America, you’re given a front row seat”.

I, too, think the title should be changed to "The Truth About Politicians"...it's too universal, doesn't describe JUST the Republicans!

In keeping with the Carlin theme, this is my latest favorite quote of his:

“The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I really want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.”

You guys are funny. Niether Leary nor Carlin did anything substantial to ease the life of the working class other than give them a laugh - that's laudable but don't lose perspective. Honestly, for all the practical knowledge they shared about how to improve the lives of the folks buying their tickets and making them really f@cking rich, you might even think they were hired by tptb, "get them riled up, play to their egos and sense of entitlement, and leave them with nothing. The next morning they'll be spent and back at work ready to make more widgets.”

Hello,

Yes, that's probably it. Carlin was probably a paid employee of the Federal government, used to spread reverse misinformation to quell the sheeple into making more wool. I'm sure Piratenews has a source that can give you more specifics.

I don't think he ever proposed a "big fucking plan". You seem to be implying he should have, but I'm not sure why. He was a comedian and cultural critic. At best he was trying to wake people up, get them to question things a bit more and maybe begin to realize that there's a problem to solve. You have to convince people that there's actually something wrong before you can begin putting together a solution.

I'm not sure there IS a big plan. Maybe the idea is that if you realize the honest truth, you might not be such an eager participant in the system. You might decide to throw a wrench in the gears now and again. You might decide to not play by the rules, or you might just decide to have your own private revolution now and again, even if it was just painting subversive street art.

Does any of it change anything? Who knows? What if all it changes is a mind? Would that be too much to ask? Too little?

Is it somehow harmful or detrimental, or unhelpful, to know some hard truths?

The best comedians I've ever heard make you THINK after you've stopped laughing. And if you can get enough people thinking, and asking hard questions, you really can make a difference?

Hello,

I'm responding to what you wrote. You seem to think the man failed us somehow, or even helped 'The Powers That Be' because he didn't start a movement to topple the government.

I'm not sure where you get your expectations about people from.

Mr. Carlin talked about us and the world we live in, holding up a mirror to our absurdities, our absurd government, and our absurd socio-economic conditions. He shared this information with an audience of millions.

If that ain't laudable enough for you, I can only imagine the supreme failure the average bloke is by comparison.

For my own part, he did a metric butt-load more with his life than I've done with mine, so I'll give myself permission to think he's cool and admire his contribution.

I grew up with his comedy and hear the same notes you all hear, the same things to applaud, but after his last attempts that failed miserably (as Wulf mentioned), I started hearing nothing but him trying to do his schtick. It was sad, like entertainers are slaves to the persona they created. So he was stuck doing his, "get them riled, look behind the curtain" routine because it's how he paid the bills and because he had to.
And *now* when I hear it - in the context of this site - I think schtick pure and simple. He hit those notes just like cnn hits them in a way, to play on our emotions and make us pay attention and in both cases you could ask are they making us think or are they just using us? Are they just trying to keep their audience?

Frem, when you get a chance and some spare time, Google "Banksy street art". His stuff is hi-larious, but it's also the most scathing social commentary I've seen from any artist in a long time. Scenes like this one, painted on the side of a building adjacent to the roof of another, about three stories up:

Or his take on Buddha, and what would befall such a passive figure in today's world...

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

The day we lose the ability to laugh at ourselves, we are TRULY doomed as a species. Viewing it from the "if he really felt like that, he should have DONE something, or else it's worthless" mentality is a very sad one.

What you are missing, in part, is that the population is depressed, dysenfranchised, and feels helpless. Someone who can come along and speak the TRUTH, and make it funny, makes us feel less alone, that we're not the only ones who see what's really around us. That's far more valid than anything 99.9% of the populace "does about it".

I think a sharp mind turned to social commentary is a wonderful thing. I'm still in favor of those jesters, I think it would be really productive. The politicians and governments talk to us like we're two year olds. Unfortunately that works for far too big a percentage of the population. But the rest of us hear the bullshit and KNOW it's bullshit, but feel impotent to do anything about it...as truly, we ARE. Carlin and those like him give us a method by which to vent some of those frustrations, to realize we're not alone, and to appreciate hearing the truth spoken by SOMEONE, even if it's blown up to be humorous.

I deeply admire social humorists, I think they're an integral part of our society. Do you think you'd find a George Carlin in many other societies in the world? It's a mark of America that we can laugh at ourselves, allow people who are going to "say it like it is" about the government and everything else to do their job. They make money off it?? You have to be kidding...how much money do Palin and the politicians make for lying to us with a straight face?? That's BETTTER? Don't make me laugh.

Jon Stewart, Carlin, Colbert, Robin Williams (back in his heyday), Bill Maher...you might not agree with them, but they're brilliant. And angry like us...probably comes as no surprise to anyone that studies have shown stand-up comedians are almost invariably angry people. Just as actors are generally lower-self-esteem than most, part of the reason they need attention.

Social humorists CAN help bring about change, and they have. It's just very subtle and doesn't take shape immediately, but you can bet your bippy people have heard things from them that started them thinking.

Lack of ability to laugh at ourselves is a very sad thing to have, and makes survival that much harder. Psychologically it's healthy to laugh. I wish you could. JMHO.
