Hello,

Recently, Jennifer Aniston called herself a 'retard' on the Regis and Kelly show. There has subsequently been a bit of an uproar over use of the word. The Special Olympics has spoken up, saying: "Special Olympics is always disappointed when the R-word is used, especially by someone who is influential to society,” the statement reads. “The pervasive use of the R-word, even in an off the cuff self-deprecating manner, dehumanizes people with intellectual disabilities and perpetuates painful stereotypes that are a great source of suffering and negative stigma.”

I found it interesting that this particular use of the (as it has come to be known in the media) "R-Word" has drawn such negative attention. I was under the misapprehension that calling oneself a vulgarity might be a permitted use. Perhaps this is a case where the only people who can use the vulgarity are the people referenced by the vulgarity. I have seen this to be the case in regards to the "N-Word", although I'm not sure why, if a vulgarity is considered uncouth, it should be socially permittable for anyone to use it.

I myself learned long ago the inappropriateness of using the "N-Word" in any context, but I must confess to occasionally using the "R-Word", usually in referencing a perceived intellectual disability in the subject (often myself, as in Miss Aniston's case.)

As our language evolves, I wonder how people will come to use it in the future to make socially acceptable deprecating remarks. Will we see things like, "I feel foolish" and "I am so very foolish" replace the unacceptable language? Or is the definitive approach acceptable? "I feel like a person with intellectual disabilities." It doesn't quite roll off the tongue.

Are we approaching an end to vulgarities in general? Will language become increasingly more stilted and less varied, as the desire to keep from offending people continues to decrease the range of acceptable vocabulary? Is this a step of progress, towards an era where language is less abrasive and hence words cause fewer altercations between people? Will glares, tones, and facial expressions become increasingly important when delivering sentiments of disapproval?

I have heard that in Japan, small subtleties of language and its delivery can be perceived to be as insulting as the gross use of vulgarities in America. Are we heading towards such a society in the West?

Without wanting to comment on the relative value of profanity for language (something others can probably do well), I want to question whether removing a word like "retard" from public discourse actually removes creativity and variety.

It's actually pretty uncreative to use the word because it's a highly well-known and casual slur. There is literally NO thought involved in using it.

Profanity, while it can be used creatively, is not in and of itself creative, at all. In fact, it doesn't take any profanity at all to very very creatively insult people. Not that "retard" is exactly a profanity and more of a... lame insult?

I don't feel much is lost with the lazy imprecision of "retard", where you insult the disabled by comparing your willful stupidity with their involuntary impairment, lowering yourself to their supposed low level. That's not the kind of humble self-deprecating remark it wants to be.

So I find the equation of linguistic creativity with thoughtless slurs to be incorrect.

I'm sure Mr. Raptor will be along shortly to inform me that Governor Christie did nothing of the sort. Or that it has nothing to do with being PC. ;)

So what DO you call a mentally retarded person now, under state law? What DO you call someone who actually is physically handicapped?

Hello,

Every word removed from use necessarily limits the variety of language except in cases where other new words rise to replace it. However, it is not the singularity of a word but the evolution of the concept of 'what is acceptable' that may change the nature of language.

For instance, if "I feel like a retard" is unacceptable for the reasons enumerated, then we can extend that to other situations.

If, after a full day's exertions, our muscles ache, we might be tempted to wince as we move and declare, "I feel like a cripple," or "I feel like an old man." These statements are insulting both to people with physical injuries and disabilities and people of advanced years.

Will we shift the focus of comparison to animals? "Ugh. If I was a horse they'd take me out and shoot me." Presumably, no horses will take umbrage at the comparison. However, a horse-lover might.

Any comparison of one's situation to that of another person, usually made in an attempt at hyperbole, could be perceived as insensitive. "I looked around my apartment and saw the mess. Detrius and debris was scattered everywhere, without thought. Items were discarded where they'd been used, and were piling up and drawing flies. I looked in the mirror and saw my unshaven, unwashed face. My hollow, red-veined eyes. My teeth were becoming yellowed, and covered in a nasty film. I realized that in the wake of my father's death, I'd been living like a Hobo or Meth addict."

Associations that advocate for the homeless or the drug-addicted may take umbrage at such a comparison.

The logic that removes one word or type of word use removes a host of them from acceptable dialogue. I literally wonder what language will look like if we continue this evolution towards its logical conclusions.

When I see a mentally-challenged person I NEVER think of the word "retard". I respect the special challenges that these folks face, and I am constantly amazed at how well many of them do in our society. That said, I do use the word "retard" occasionally when I want to chastise or mock a non-mentally-challenged person for doing or saying something stupid. I could say instead idiot, dope, moron, dummy, and many other words, but somehow "retard" just seems to be more impactful. I can see how families of mentally-challenged people could be hurt and offended by the word, so I never say it aloud in public; only face to face, or on the internet. I'm just a mere mortal sinner .

The R-word is probably the most used word in RWED, by both sides(conservatives and the unwashed socialist slackers), thus rendering this thread retarded. I have called a certain gay shipping clerk "retarded" hundreds of times. As for it not being creative, that is retarded. It is the perfect word for describing a stupid sheep-like creature that drools at the mere mention of obama. See not all language has to be creative. Sometimes you have to make a fucking straight forward point, short and sweet, Retard is the perfect word for the job. So, I suggest putting an end to this thread and going back to calling each other names, retard included.

Brittle, tedious whiners have launched a feeble offensive against some of the saltiest and best words in English. It is, apparently, offensive to say something is "so gay", or retarded. Pardon me, but that's the point. It doesn't matter if its "creative" or clever--sometimes its the perfect word. Said whiners aspire to reduce everything to the level of the n-word.

Take the word away, and the idea remains; no amount of censorship will change the harsh truth that retards are retarded. I would never support calling a tard a tard to the tard's tarded face, unless it was Trigg Palin, but I refuse to relinquish the word.

Hello,

Idiot, Moron, and Imbecile mean almost exactly the same thing as Retard, incidentally. These words were all used in scales of mental retardation in the medicine of the early 20th century. I would posit that if 'Retard' is offensive, then Idiot, Moron, and Imbecile are equally so.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:

Moron is a controversial term once used in psychology to denote a category of mental retardation.[1] The term was closely tied with the American eugenics movement.[2] Once the term became popularized, it fell out of use by the psychological community, as it was used more commonly as an insult than as a psychological term.

[edit] Origin and uses
"Moron" was coined in 1910 by psychologist Henry H. Goddard[3] from the Ancient Greek word μωρός (moros), which meant "dull"[4] (as opposed to "sharp"), and used to describe a person with a mental age in adulthood of between 8 and 12 on the Binet scale.[5] It was once applied to people with an IQ of 51-70, being superior in one degree to "imbecile" (IQ of 26-50) and superior in two degrees to "idiot" (IQ of 0-25). The word moron, along with others including, "idiotic," "imbecilic," "stupid," and "feeble-minded," was formerly considered a valid descriptor in the psychological community, but it is now deprecated in use by psychologists.[6]

Following opposition to Goddard's attempts to popularize his ideas,[7] Goddard recanted his earlier claims about the moron: "It may still be objected that moron parents are likely to have imbecile or idiot children. There is not much evidence that this is the case. The danger is probably negligible."[8]

Any physically challenged person could similarly take umbrage at the concept of something being Lame. For instance, "This thread is Lame" could be equally as grievous an insult as Retard to the proper category of individual.

Well, I can only speak for myself. I've never used "retard", just I suppose because it never occurs to me. There are mor "flavorful" words to use, some of those being those suggested.

I do tend to think we're becoming too hypersensitive as a society, when it comes to things like that. The word "retard" has long since, in my observation, been used to refer to the "mentally challenged", or "developmentally disabled", which WAS the PC version but now has beome the official term.

To me the N-word has a particularly ugly history, and was DELIBERATELY used as a pejorative for a very long time, so it has a special place in the vernacular and it's never even occurred to me to use it. I know it differs across the country and among society, but I think it's completely different from "retard", which has changed it's usage to be used the way Aniston undoubtedly used it.

I agree about the developmentally disabled; we had a group of them who came into our pizza parlor for years and we loved 'em, they were sweet people and I hate the way people view them and speak about them. My last job was also a nonprofit working with them and I visited a number of the group homes. I abhor the way people joke about them. I guess the short version would be: "What RiverL said".

But I think it CAN go too far. If I felt that way, I could be offended by people using the word "crazy", as it's what used to be used to refer to us mentally ill. But I have no problem with slang...language evolves, and I think left to itself, will allow words like retard to become extinct through lack of use.

Extrapolate what Anthony said further; what if we had to think every time we spoke if some word or other will offend some group or other? Yeesh!

I've just always equated the word in question with "idiot" and "stupid", and not with the people in question. That's just me.

Meh, only time I ever recall using the word was discussing spark gaps and points based ignitions...

But as to what to call someone to avoid offense, that one I can maybe answer.

Within the pagan community I dealt with at one time was an individual known as Zey (name altered, of course) and their exact gender seemed to be a matter of some confusion and speculation, with a hefty helping of prejudice, and intolerance for the beliefs, lifestyle and potentive sexual orientation concerning this person and their mate...
(trust me, discrimination, intolerance and petty nastiness is just as if not more, prevalent amongst pagans as anyone else, never let em tell ya different!)

This led to a bit of a "situation" at an event in NY, when because of all that fracas even those sympathetic kinda avoided the two like the plauge, and there was much private, furtive discussion on how, if at all, to refer to Zey - which from my external viewpoint(1), appeared pretty offensive since it was both damn obvious and the person of mention was very much specifically not invited to said conversations.

So, I simply walked right up to Zey in the midst of all this after making sure damn near everyone else was in hearing range and asked "So! how would you prefer to be called ?" - and from that day Zey has been "Him" without any further question of it, regardless of any speculation of anatomy or orientation, not that I cared.

In short, if you wanna know how someone prefers to be called, why not *fucking ASK them* ?

Is that so very damned hard ?

-Frem
(1)It's perhaps a bit of an understatement, but the pagan community has even less affection for me or my presence than other anarchists do, and probably with somewhat more reason - and yet, because of my usefulness to them, and direct, often personal, knowledge of my bent towards violence, they tolerate me well enough, but I will never be "welcome", no.

The following TLDR narrative is a true account of my first and formative encounter with the handicapped. It was written in crayon, and transcribed by my secretary, who is a bunny.

Your Tard is Broken: A True Story About Retards

by mincingbeast

When I was a fey little cub, instead of the strapping mincingbeast that I am today, I was forced to go to a special school as part of a well-meaning program. Once a month on wednesdays, my classmates and I were shipped across town to spend the day at a school for the developmentally delayed. None of my peers knew what it meant to be developmentally delayed until we got to the school, and discovered that it was a synonym for retard. I beleive that the word tard is an archetype that suggests itself to children everywhere--it need not be taught--and it cannot be replaced with euphemisms.

I believe the idea was to teach us empathy, and broaden our horizons (indeed, similar programs involving visits to nursing homes were later forced upon us). We were each paired up with a special friend. We performed activities (coloring in books and so forth) and shared lunch, and then went home and told retard jokes for the rest of the month. My teacher had a long talk in class about language.

My special friend, a very handicapped little fellow I will call Hank, came complete with a leather hockey helmet. He smelled funny. I disliked him. I could not guess why he inisted upon wearing his helmet, but on my third visit, guess work became moot when Hank fell to the ground and began to bash his head with great urgency. It was a seizure, the teacher explained. Later that day, on the bus ride home, my friends accused me of breaking my tard. "Your tard is broken!" laughed the morbidly obese Indian kid.

I hated going to visit Hank, and loathed him. He was foul in all ways foulness could be measured by an 8 year old. A few weeks later, upon arriving at Hank's school, I was taken aside by administrators, who in very grave tones explained that Hank was no longer with us. I was to be paired with a new special friend. His name was Hank, too. This Hank was much better than the old Hank--he had a rat-tail, a fanny pack, and loved GI Joes almost as much as I did. But still, I felt miserable about the old Hank, and wished I hadn't been such a dick to him in the short time we had known each other. Life had been cruel enough to him without his special friend being so...uncomfortable in his company.

I did not learn empathy from the experience; rather, I learned that life, especially tard life, is fungible. And I have loved the word tard ever since, and used it at every opportunity. It suggests that the best way to limit the use of the r-word is to limit exposure to rs.

I worked with a retarded guy for a while and we became good friends. He really liked the fact the I treated him like everyone else, which meant every day I would threaten to kill him in a new fashion. He would respond by making up terrible names to call me in response. I was scarred for life when he once called me a "poo poo doo doo head". I should have whipped his ass but if he had kicked my ass instead I would have had to live the rest of my life knowing I got my ass kicked by a tard and I couldnt live with that.

Mince that was a beautiful and heart warming story. I wish all RWED posters had the angelic heart you seem to posses.

My earliest memories of tardness also came at a young age and was life altering. My tard's name was Spuddy. I did not have the knowledge to know that Spuddy was mentally challenged, sure I could observe his dangling tongue, short stubby arms and recognize that he seemed too old to be wearing diapers. The lesson I learned from my tard was one I would carry the rest of my days. Being a snitch rat bastard is wrong.

Being a young rambunctious kid in the projects I some times got a little carried away playing with my tard. Well, one day after playing and having a ball with Spuddy he back stabbed me like I had never imagined possible. As I walked past my living room window I heard that little thick tongued asshole yelling up my stairs "Kaneman's mamma, Kaneman's mamma!!" My mother replied, "What is it Spuddy?", What he said next got me beat to an inch of my life. "Kaneman's throwing M80s at me and making me hold firecrackers, then he laughs and jumps up and down."

I will never forget that feeling of betrayal.

HKCAVALIER

Hey Anthony,

I take the optimistic view that this is just a phase, a symptom of information-shock, and a desperate attempt by the old to hold onto the denial-driven "values" of the imagined past (or for the more liberally inclined, the "fantastical future"). The amount of minute-to-minute information we get about everyone, but particularly celebrities, has skyrocketed in the last few years. If a celebrity says anything remotely questionable, anywhere, it's on Google homepage within the hour. Everyone's inner-schoolmarm is going ape-shit with just how depraved the human race actually is.

We're transitioning into a post-surveillance culture. There's simply too much information available about everyone for the police state to keep up. So no one cares. Everyone knows that our information on facebook goes straight to the Pentagon, but nobody cares. By the time they've sifted through all the data they've mined today, our grandkids will be old and grey. The paranoia of the 90's, the abject xenophobia of this new millennium, are on the way out. I don't think the youngsters today are gonna grow up giving two hoots and a holler about this stuff. Throughout history, any attempt by the old to control the language of the young has met with failure.

That great treatise on language destruction, Orwell's 1984, when you really think about it, describes a purely bourgeois phobia. Ultimately, the young and the poor have always lived in a dystopian regime and have done whatever they can get away with, said whatever comes to mind, which is most anything the old and the well-heeled can think of and a whole lot more.

It's the middle class that gets all in an uproar about these kinda non-issues--if you have enough money it doesn't matter what you say, and if you're poor enough, nobody cares. Sure, Mel Gibson is gonna have a hard time finding A-list work in the near future, but the old bastard doesn't need to work for a living anyway.

And--and this is the big, big deal, the psychedelic elephant in the room--most of what anyone knows or experiences is subconscious anyway. And subconsciously, everybody knows everything about everyone else. The thought police have failed. There is no control but the control you believe in and that's just sad. We either spend our lives fighting for the illusion of control, or we spend our lives trying to figure out how to deal with reality on reality's terms. "Retard" is the least of our worries.

Is it bad that your post provoked a bout of happy maniacal laughter directed at the powers that think they be ?

It's all true though, they're doomed, they just don't know it yet.

As for the rest... well in a way you could consider it equality - I went to those horrid "second-chance" schools for the vile crimes of asking questions and actually defending myself, and as such many of my classmates were indeed a couple cans short of a sixpack, and I treated them just like everyone else, with icy cold hostility.

One thing I did learn from watchin em was that the disabled are no better, morally, than anyone else, and on occasion far worse.

In the end, they're people, and as flawed in every other way as people are, one disadvantage more or less is meaningless, in that respect.

Mind you that's comin from someone who's over 30% non-OEM parts, too.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Fewer than 1 in 100,000 people were directly impacted by 9/11.

Only one street in one city in the nation would be directly affected by the building of a community center on it.

All the rest is pure phony outrage drummed up by people who have nothing to do with 9/11, aimed at other people who had nothing to do with 9/11.

They are whining because they are easily offended, and want the PC Police to step in and save them from uncomfortable thoughts.

It comes as no surprise that you are one of them.

Tell me about it.

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

Reminds me of the flap over the good old Norse-based word "Niggard", meaning miserly or stingy. Its similarity to the dreaded "N-Word", and the ignorance of folk who want to make something of nothing, have just about driven it out of the language.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I remember that. Some fellow said Niggardly and was chewed up for it.

It was pretty sad.

Straight forward and descriptive like calling you a retarded fucking nigger dike cunt.
