There have been too many verbal gaffes lately by Republicans to give me any confidence that these current favorable poll numbers will hold up until Election Day.

Newt Gingrich taking the Nazi road in the NY mosque debate is very damaging.

Sarah Palin standing by and encouraging Dr Laura after her N-word debacle is very troubling.

Sharron Angle, the gaffe-a-minute embarrassment to the human species...."called by God to run, like Jesus & Moses were called" (nice one Sharron!) ...or "victims of rape or incest shouldn't be allowed to have abortions" Ouch!! This crazy bitch is who the Republicans chose to defeat Harry Reid, one of our most sought-after targets??? Holy shit!

Rand Paul squirming for weeks to "clarify" distasteful remarks concerning the 1964 Civil Rights Law.

Fox News promoting and sponsoring Glenn Beck's Washington DC rally?? Boy, that'll really help Fox defend from its' critics that say they push an agenda! And Beck himself....the MLK speech site?, on the anniversary of it?? Are you for real? Are you so powerful now that no one around you dares to tell you you're nuts. Will Woodrow Wilson and his 1915 Socialist pals be there at the rally too?

John Boehner - will you EVER learn to smile and look almost like a human being?

Tim Pawlenty - will you please distribute lots of amphetamines to everyone before you speak. Might help people stay awake to hear you for a change.

Colonel Alan West - will you stop accusing people in your audience of secretly being little Nazi spies and using Gestapo tactics, especially when it turns out that the person you said that about is the son of a Holocaust survivor?

It goes on and on.

My advice to Republicans is ...SHUT UP ALREADY! Obama and Pelosi have taken Dem popularity to new lows, and they have given you a rare opportunity to just campaign against what they've done to America. But every day Republicans screw up and give the Dems more and more campaign ammo to use. Monday night Sean Hannity asked a great, if not obvious question to his panel of guests, "Have the Republicans "peaked" too early?" Yes Sean they have, and you know they have. You're worried, based on examples like those I pointed out, that they're going to self-destruct before the mid-term election. As for your pal Dick Morris' steadfast prediction that Republicans will take back the House & Senate? ... Har har har dee har har!!!!!!!!!! His last certain prediction was that Hillary Clinton would be elected President in 2008.

I hate to disagree ( ), but I have to on this one.

I still don't doubt that the Republicans have a very good chance of taking the House in a couple months. I agree, however, that they probably aren't going to sweep to an overwhelming victory as some seem to believe. They'll likely pick up a few Senate seats, but not a majority, and they'll definitely pick up some House seats, quite possibly a majority, but certainly not a veto-proof majority.

I don't necessarily see any of that as a *bad* thing, though. I despise rubber-stamp Congresses, because that is historically where we get in the most trouble in this country, be it getting involved in needless, pointless, endless wars of our own choosing, or just enacting disastrous economic policies. Bill Clinton did six years with an opposition Congress, and it's not as if NOTHING was accomplished; it just makes it more likely that the things that are passed are things that really NEED to be passed, and it cuts down on some of the knucklehead stuff.

I'm very impressed with your post. I would not have thought that you would even care to respond to a post that was about the projected Republican political advantage, nor this Conservative's loss of confidence based on what he sees as self-destructive behavior by Republicans. But you did, and you did a great job of analyzing it fairly.

Fortunately, we have Obama's flip flop on the ground zero Mosque issue, Reid's racially divisive remarks about how no Hispanics could ever vote Republican,.... for those paying attention, i think issues, more than anything, will win the day for the GOP.

Jongsie, it does me no harm to admit the obvious: Democrats are in a really shitty position, but not nearly as bad off as they could have been. The recent events and gaffes you pointed out have been an absolute GIFT to the Democrats.

Now, instead of having to answer questions like "Where's our fuckin' JOBS, asshole?!", Dems get to point out that Republicans are indeed the "big tent" party - if the tent is shaped like a Klansman's white hood, that is. The Republicans have tried to say that they're "inclusive" and "diverse", but in this year have done their level best to make damn sure that everyone in this country knows full well that they hate black people, they hate Muslims (ALL Muslims), they hate Hispanics, they hate women, they hate gays, and most of all, they hate the poor and the middle class.

Now, do I think that all conservatives actually hate all those groups and all those individuals? Of course not, but that's the impression they've put out there, and that's the message that middle America is taking from them.

John Boehner is out there trying to convince people that giving special treatment to those very special people who already make over $250,000 per year (individually - for couples it goes to $500,000 annually) is really what they most need, because they've been hit so hard by the economic downturn they engineered, and they might not be able to afford a new Benz if the other 98% of us don't help them out.

And now RNC chairman Michael Steele (great porn name; apparently "Brock Landers" was already taken! ) is trying to backtrack and flip-flop on the GOP's "official" stance on Arizona's Papers Please law.

A pox on both their houses, basically.

Actually, I fear more some of the people you mentioned being in POWER than I do either party per se. There is such absurdity running around, such DANGEROUS absurdity, that I'm not sure what to think.

The Dems have turned out to be easily-manipulated, ball-less eunichs. The Reps seem to be putting up the most out-worldly, fringy fanatics that they're terrifying. NEITHER wants to reach across the aisle...well, the Dems "caved" to a lot of stuff, but it didn't do any good and I'm not sure how they reach across the aisle the way things are now.

Negative campaigning sucks, but seems to have always been effective. I'm sick to death of it. If neither side wants to tell us what they'll DO, rather than how awful the other side is, it's just a mess...and that seems to be what's happening.

I'm not sure what to expect, in fact I have few expectations these days. The Dems, you're right, have the perfect opportunity to avoid losing any more seats than necessary, but they, too, would need to SHUT UP and let the whackos on the right herd everyone their way. They're being herded, but the Dems aren't utilizing anything that could make that to their advantage.

I guess my only remaining prayer is that, whoever gets majority in whichever house, some of those you have listed do NOT get elected. If enough of them are, gawd help this country...and to think I didn't believe it could get any worse once Bush was gone. I waaaay underestimated the Republicans' ability to manipulate and set the agenda, as well as just HOW dirty they'd play and how people's frustrations with an economy Bush got us INTO could be turned into hatred of things totally unreal (like Obama being Muslim, not being born here, being Nazi, etc., etc.).

I don't think whichever side wins, that it will improve the country much, at least in the short term. If we could only get moderates on both sides who would work TOGETHER... but it seems to be going in the opposite direction, on both sides...

I'm kinda mystified by the prevailing think about the upcoming election. I've yet to see the GOP take any kind of lead--leading isn't their style nowadays, tripping the other runner is their style.

The GOP seems to be suffering, bleeding out, even. They have NO national face--no identity. What, Palin? Gingrich? Youch. The GOP's been more or less wholly co-opted by the extreme right, aka "the base." Every single "tea party candidate" is heading for a loss in a general election, right? You mobilize the folk who agree with "NO!" and you don't get any candidates that anyone is really gonna get excited about saying "YES!" to. Candidates REQUIRE such excitement to get 'em elected. "NO!" can trip up the Dem's, sure, scare 'em into abandoning their cause, but it's not a recipe for an electoral sweep.

You can't win a national election just by saying the other guy sucks. You have to bring something positive to the table. And no one knows that better than the current leader of the Democratic Party, Barack Obama. The polling is bound to be misleading in this case for one reason: the trouble with polls is that negatives, the "disapproval" numbers, are always inflated owing to the fact that malcontents are always more mouthy, more motivated to make their voices heard, than people who find the status quo more acceptable--just ask anyone who works in customer service.

Republicans HAVE GOT to put something actually positive, hopeful, perceptibly practicable forward if they're to have a prayer of winning much of anything this November.

I would say the best way to squander a lead is to NOT call a double dissolution election when you have the chance and are up 76%-24% in the polls and instead decide to introduce policies that might cause some controversy a few months from when an election is due.

Also dumping your leader three months out is a BAD idea.

The Dems have lost their base by pandering to banks, insurances, military-industrial complex, Chamber of Commerce, and anyone else they could possibly sell their *ss to. They torpedoed their own populists in the primaries so they could have a bunch of nice, "safe" incumbents on the ticket in fall when what they REALLY should have been doing is pushing candidates like Grayson front and center.

Talking about confidence and hope isn't going to calm people down when their JOBS are on the line. We're looking at a double-dip recession, folks. And Obama's done dick-all to stop it, and I think in their guts people know that.

So now you have a bunch of folks who are really riled up and not thinking clearly, and you can lead them down any merry path you choose: just get a red cape, paint "Muslim" or "illegal immigrant" or "gubmint" on it, wave it around, and let people charge down that path. Economic instability like this IS a recipe for fascism... Germans voted for it back when, and Americans are voting for it now.

What I find head-bangingly stoopid is that people are voting for billionaire/multi-millionaire candidates. Who the frak do they think sold them down the river in the first place? Who do they think exported the jobs, voted themselves big fat bonuses, preferential tax treatments, and screwed them over on their health insurances?

The only reason why the Dems can't point that out is because they're in the pockets of big business too. It just wouldn't do, you see, to alienate your biggest donors.

Frankly, at this point I don't care if Sarah Palin is elected President. If I can't find a good candidate to vote for on my side of the ticket, I'm not gonna vote for the lesser of two weevils. I've jumped tracks before, and I'll be more than happy to do it again, The Dems need an effing big wakeup kick in the pants.

Republicans Introduce “Kill the Economy” Plan
By
Marcus Manfred

Congressional Republicans unveiled a plan on Monday that they said would hurt the nation’s economy, benefit the wealthy at the expense of the middle class and add billions to the national debt.

The move is a continuation of Republican policies during the Bush administration and part of a plan they hope will lead to rising voter dissatisfaction and Republican gains at the ballot box.

“Remember how we racked up huge deficits during the Bush years, gave billions to the wealthy and let the middle class fall behind? Well, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet,” House Minority Leader John Boehner (R- Ohio) said. “We’re going to drive those unemployment and deficit numbers up so high that the American people will be voting Republican until they realize we screwed them over once again.”

Okay, I know it's supposed to just be satirical, in the style of The Onion, but honestly, I can't really find anything in the article that doesn't ring true. Sure, a couple of the direct quotes from Republicans are made up, but to paraphrase Rushbaugh, "We know they THINK it."

Cav, I agree. But bear in mind, negative campaigning WORKS. People are scared and angry, so the opposite of whatever exists sounds GOOD, even if you have to ignore some extremes along with it. It’s a toss-up; the Dems have screwed up royally, but the GOP seems equally able to “snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory” at this point by the candidates they’re letting the Monster they’ve loosed put up. Fear and hate can be used to gain power, but you better watch out if you’re not able to control it; you may be sorry if you get what you “asked for”.

But I would qualify it to say that the “facism” being currently put up may not be as powerful as they hope (and I fear); it’s the Republicans who have got their people charging down that path, there is so far no proof that all the American people will follow them. One can still hope.

If Palin were to get in power, I think the price the country would pay would be far more awful than just giving the Dems a kick in the pants, unfortunately. Now, a raging defeat of every one of the fringe candidates the Tea Party has given the nomination, that would be a good thing, but it wouldn’t, unfortunately, teach the Dems a damned thing.

The “face” I expect to see this weekend is Messianic Glen Beck, wallowing in his own self-importance and continuing to spout his hate- and fear-mongering line. To quote Beck himself:
Quote:

‘I’m a rodeo clown,’ he said in an interview, adding with a coy smile, “It takes great skill.” “He added later: “I say on the air all time, ‘if you take what I say as gospel, you’re an idiot.’“

That’s one that blows my mind. The country is in an uproar over a COMMUNITY CENTER in New York, saying Ground Zero is “hollowed ground”. Yet nobody gives a shit about Beck holding a self-serving rally which will be about hate and fear and intolerance on TRULY hollowed ground of the Lincoln Memorial, where the Dream speech was given, something virtually the whole country respects, on the SAME DAY. It shows how far down America has come, and how piteously.

What you will see is a bunch of angry people, angry and ugly signs, few (if any) Black or Hispanic faces, and speakers spouting nothing but things which are DIRECTLY opposite of the Dream speech. I weep for America.

She’s not, we’ve already seen that. I’m betting she wouldn’t run; the salary isn’t anything like what she’s making now, and just think of all the ACTUAL interviews and questions she’d have to face! I don’t think she’s particularly bright—-savvy, yes, and maybe more uneducated than actually stupid—-but I don’t think she’s THAT stupid!

Yes, Sig, I agree with what you said. Unless somehow the Dems can stir up enough people to get the fuck out there and VOTE, rather than sit home watching TV and laughing at the fringers thinking “they can’t possibly be elected”, we are in deeeep shit!

Don't worry, no one would accuse you of that.

Cthulu 2012, why vote for a lesser evil ?

While I wholeheartedly agree with your well-deserved flaming of the demopansies, Siggy, the one ticket I would not only like to see, but actively root for, would involve Ron Paul cause I certainly wouldn't mind seeing him as a Veep to Grayson.

Grayson/Paul could completely sweep it, cause you'd get quite a few of the die hard lever pullers on either end and a huge chunk of the middle, and they have worked together on a lot of common sense reforms like HR5353.

Just found this from former Bush speech-writer Michael Gerson. He's not very optimistic about the Tea Party, and here's why:

Hell, MOST of us here would, that's why I keep mentioning it, cause it's hands-down the best idea for a turn-around from the brink we're headed off, and a chance to start healing the rifts between political viewpoints and stop lobbing bombs across em.

If they did it, no one else would stand a chance.

Sorry, I should have posted more details along with the link. Basically, Gerson poses three questions for the Tea Party:

1.) Do you believe that Social Security and Medicare are unconstitutional?

2.) Do you believe that American identity is undermined by immigration?

3.) Do you believe that gun rights are relevant to the health care debate?

So, if you answer yes to any of these questions, Gerson thinks you're bound to lose. And, as far as I can tell, these are all fundamental Tea Party (as it exists today) positions. So, how again are the Tea Party candidates supposed to win in a general election?

Oh, and GRAYSON/PAUL '12!!!

On a more serious note, Grayson is not my ideal president. (If we were speaking of ideals, I wouldn't even have a president...but that's a different dream.)

SO. If he and Paul were to be able to work together for 4 years on nothing but cleaning up the Fed, they would have done America a big service.

Sure, I say get them working on the one thing they do agree on. Maybe two roommates will disagree about how to layout their home, but if they can agree long enough to get the rotting corpse out of the house, they can argue about the minor stuff later.

Only in your twisted little mind - you MIGHT look at how many bills they co-sponsored, you MIGHT look at how fiscal responsibility, limited government, an end to imperialism and flat common sense should be universal principles, but that both of em are willing to buck their own damn party to hold to them.

The only reason you don't see it, is the same reason you are blind to the fact that the GOP has, itself, also committed every single offense you flame the Dems for, that those parties are two sides of the same ugly face.

Partisanship.

And stupidity of course, that cause it just wouldn't be right NOT to insult you, you bein a masochist and all...

Sayin it don't make it true, Kaney-Waney, especially when I looked it up faster than you did, and it seems you're unable to wrap your brain around unpalatable facts no matter how obvious they are, huh ?

But maybe if you shout it loud enough, long enough, you can make it true, eh ?

I'd pay good money to see you try.

Sure Frem, You are delusional. Ron Paul and liberal Alan Grayson have similar voting records. Ron Paul just had the most conservative voting record since 1937, Grayson not even close....look it up.

Interesting article, Cav. While a bit generalized, the major points are valid. I especially appreciated his conclusions that:
Quote:

Most Americans who identify with the tea party movement are understandably concerned about the size and reach of government. Their enthusiasm is a clear Republican advantage. But tea party populism is just as clearly incompatible with some conservative and Republican beliefs.

What some of us have been saying.

As to Grayson/Paul, as I've said before "me too!" Only I think I'd make it "Paul/Grayson"...if they tempered one another, I like a lot of Paul's positions, now that I know them better. And being on opposite sides might make for interesting policies, IF they could compromise with one another, and depending on the makeup of Congress & Senate.

There's not a damned thing wrong with fantasizing about it...remember, this is a SCI FI website!
