Well, it seems to be off to a good start. I appreciate two things:

Participants have been told not to bring political signs and flyers; and the atmosphere so far is more festival than anything so far.

I don't appreciate:

Beck saying before the event that the rally would "reclaim the civil rights movement" and once there that "America today begins to turn back to God. For too long, this country has wandered in darkness." The rally has nothing to do with reclaiming the civil rights movement; it has to do with firing up voters on the right and self-agrandizement of Beck.

Beck putting himself up as some kind of "savior" who talks to God. He's calling himself the "Special Operations Warrior Foundation, Glenn Beck". A bit much, if you ask me.

That's my opinion, and that of others.

I don't know what his motives are for certain, but the timing, placement and references to "taking back America" have molded my opinion. Obviously from news stories others share that opinion to a lesser or greater extent. From the Christian Science Monitor:
Quote:

A scheduling fluke or a ratings grab by a Fox News channel TV host? A late-summer push to rally the far-right "tea party" faithful as election season swings into high gear or a poke in the eye of history? All or none of the above?

Calendar, shmalendar, conservative talk show host Glenn Beck says about his choice of Aug. 28 for a Washington rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

“This is about restoring honor, this is about the things that Martin Luther King stood for … the content of character, not the color of skin, but people have been acting as if no white man can mention or praise or support the mission of Martin Luther King. African-Americans don’t own Martin Luther King.” [That's just bullshit, MANY Americans praise and support King!]

“This is a moment, quite honestly, that I think we reclaim the civil rights movement. We are on the side of individual freedoms and liberties and, damn it, we will reclaim the civil rights movement … we will take that movement because we were the people who did it in the first place.”

Who, exactly, is "we" in that storm-the-ramparts statement?

White aggrievement is the subtext of that Beck trumpet call, suggests sociologist Charles Gallagher of La Salle University. “Beck is tapping into a sense of loss that permeates many sectors of society, particuarly during economic downturns.”

In choosing the Martin Luther King speech anniversary, Beck also capitalizes on the notion of progress in racial equality, a theme that underlies what Professor Gallagher calls a subtle but growing sense among many on the right that whites have become the new minority, “a group that must now reclaim its own rights.”

The Fox News host is trying to "take advantage of a feeling of loss, even if not conscious ... on the part of many white people, certainly many conservative white people,” says Xavier University sociologist Jacqueline Battlaora, a former Chicago police officer. She says a large segment of the tea party movement responds to this message by pushing for its own individual rights, and adds, "and this is the group Beck is reaching out to in this weekend rally."

But political strategists say the main goal of Saturday's event is to rally the troops ahead of what could be a pivotal election.

“It’s the end of August, [and] the big election push will begin next week, and getting people out and involved is what Glenn Beck is all about,” says Larry Farnsworth, former speechwriter for Republican ex-House Speaker Dennis Hastert and now vice president of Crosby-Volmer International Communications, a public relations firm. “This is all about making sure his followers in the tea party movement get involved in the election that is just around the corner.”

http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/The-Vote/2010/0827/Glenn-Beck-ra
lly-on-Saturday-Whose-honor-is-being-restored

That pretty much sums up how I feel; I think Beck is feeling his power on the right, aware of the feelings in the nation that give him an opening, and firing up the right for the election. Strangely, I wasn't aware we had "lost" our honor, and we only "wandered in darkness" during the last administration.

He's entitled to hold his rally, and say whatever he wants. I have no problem with that. I wish he'd chosen another date, held it somewhere other than the Lincoln Memorial (sorry, but for me neither is a coincidence), talked about "reclaiming" the civil rights movement and not brought God into the picture, because all four are pretty pointed statements to me. But hey, more power to them for not making it OBVIOUSLY political and I hope they have a wonderful day!

I suppose. But I'm viewing this as I do any sort of Neo-Nazi or KKK or Westboro Baptist Church meeting (not implying that this is anything like those, mind you) in that I simply don't pay any attention to it. Because I know that if I did, all I'd do is get real angry and annoyed at what they were saying. And much like those other groups I mentioned, Glenn Beck and his group of tea-bagging Hateriots simply aren't worth getting riled up over because also like those other groups, it's just a few folk that think like him and I know that most of the rest of the country is (mostly) sane and doesn't think like that.

While you're in New Orleans shoving $5 bills into the G-Sting of a male stripper Glen, Sarah and others are trying to save America from Barry and the Demorats. FYI, Al (scumbag) Sharpton is holding a tiny little rally near by, AND IT'S SO CUTE!

You should send pictures of all the pelicans and fat people you've cleaned oil off of. I think you're spending all your time in strip clubs doing double shots and licking whip cream off strippers.

Angry? You're the one who's angry, (and a douchebag) because someone has thrown a really big anti-government party and you're not welcome. How's it feel that YOU'RE group is in power and now they're protesting YOU. If you need to feel better tune to MSNBC and I'm sure they'll report that no one showed up.

P.S. If people who agree with Glen, Sarah and others at the rally remind you of a KKK or Neo-Nazi rally please feel free to suck my dick......I said please

I realize I'm already an idiot for engaging in this but here goes...

It reminds me of them because it's just a gathering of very few people with rather silly beliefs. Even if Beck's entire listening audience shows up, that's maybe what, 1% of the country's population? Sorry, but I'm not going to get myself all fussed up about that big of a minority. Until something like 200 million people show up to one of his gatherings, Beck and his little klan are of no concern to me and are not worth my attention.

Oh, and my people aren't in charge because as stated, I'm a socialist. So the only person I can say that is similar to my beliefs that is in the federal government is Bernie Sanders. So one guy out of the 100 in the Senate is hardly saying my people are in charge. We've got one in and at least something. But it's nowhere near something worth getting excited over. Much like Beck's rally.

You pre-judge these people because they're at a rally that has Glen Beck in it, as for that phonie Bernie Sanders, he said he hated Obamacare because it was written by "K" street, BUT! He voted for it anyway. If he had any balls, (he doesn't because he's just another Demorat bitch) he would have voted against it! This proves he just another one of Reid & Pelosi's whores, he does what he's told. When have you read or heard about Bernie taking a stand and fillabustering a bill? He's just another Demorat, not a renegade. And he has a stupid haircut.

Boy, is that a helluvan attempt to turn the subject! It has nothing whatsoever to do with the subject; you had nothing on point to add, hd to pull that out of thin air? ...Oh, wait, I just realized it was Whozit, I take it back. [/snark]

I see he also said MSNBC will say "nobody" showed up. What a statement! First off, MSNBC doesn't DO news on the weekend; second, I have no doubt they'll cover it Monday, and CNN is covering it right now; it's news, just like Lady Gaga...and about is interesting.

But I'm also pretty sure Fox News will inflate the numbers...hopefully they won't be so foolish as to cut and paste video from a past rally to do so...I'm sure they've learned their lesson from THAT fraud. Let's see which kind they use this time...

This has been very interesting.

In one corner, we have the likes of Al Sharpton and in the other, Glenn Beck.

You might even say that it was the old way vs the new way.

On the one hand, you had a group celebrating and encouraging the strength and unification of America. The idea to come together in faith, hope, strength and dignity. While also returning us to our roots (Oh please... someone make a big deal of the fact that I used the word "roots") and showing that individualism, is the backbone to ANY free society.

And had Alveda King. (Beck)

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/alveda-king-speaks-glenn-becks-dc-rally
/story?id=11504453

On the other, you had a group/coalition STILL trying to segregate, mitigate, and subjegate. (lol watching Sharpton, I can't help but rhyme.)

The old way of "diversity" MUST be shoved into the trench from where it spawned. We are Americans. Light American, Dark Americans. But Americans.

What was once true Civil Rights has since been taken over by the Black Liberation Theology/ Socialist sorts who only recognize certain minorities. Condie Rice, Judge Thomas should be praised and embraced, yet the naaLcp instead mocks & vilifies them.

On this, Beck nails it.

I liked much of the 4 hour event, with Alveda King's speech being the highlight for me. Honestly, although they said and repeated what they were there for, and what their message was, I had a hard time buying the overly preachy parts of it. The tributes to the soldiers and charitable citizens were moving. But much of it, the closing Beck speech especially, seemed to me to be a bit naive of the complexities of the real world we live in, and it also had a few dozen extra Jesus Christ and country references for me to feel comfortable about.

There were some strange parts as well, including two statments made by one of the pastors who spoke. In back to back sentences he said "Glenn Beck is God's son." Then he said "God sent his Son...."... he meant different things, hence the capital S for the latter, but it sounded very bizarre. I thought the singers did a great job memorizing "patriot and God" awkward sounding song lyrics, but they gave it their Gospel all. I was waiting for Simon Cowell to yell out Thank You!

Can we ever have just ONE discussion where we don't descend into personal attacks on one another. And don't say "Oh, that's just what the Left/Right do" because you all do it and you know you do it. So, can you all just agree to not do it? No? I didn't think so.

And while suicide is always good for a laugh! (HA HA HA!!!!) It's actually sounding like a good idea again.

Umm, you DO know Krauthammer is insane, a NeoCon, heavily involved with AEI (they even gave him an award for being a good little jackboot), the Heritage Foundation and other NeoCon front groups, as well of being a big fan of the Scoop Jackson "plan" which amounts to reducing this country to an imperial dictatorship, right ?

To put it bluntly, he's one of the in-crowd of the folks who recently got done fucking us as a nation and a people for eight straight years, why the HELL would any rational person give this psycho the time of fuckin day ?

This is a guy who's fundamental mindset is the same as the rest of the right wing nutters, and if you think they're NOT insane, and have the stomach to wince your way through it, actually read some of the shit they take as gospel, like Ringos Ghost or Kratmans Watch on the Rhine....

And then face the ugly fact that they honestly, really, truly and deeply BELIEVE THE WORLD WORKS THIS WAY - and thus "The ends justify the means" when they tell you whatever they think you wanna hear, in order to get you to hop on their command.

Hop right into the camps, all for the greater good, while they count the fucking money.

ALL of them, on both "sides", cause it's really just ONE side - theirs, and by playing us off against each other, it keeps us from realizing and addressing that, fuckin a - sharpton and beck are prolly having a drink together somewhere private and giggling over their own cleverness while watching us fools argue.

Don't you GET IT yet ?

Oh, and just as an aside...

Review of Ghost

Review of Watch on the Rhine

The guys at SFR didn't have the guts to read the afterword before reaching for a barf bag, but I did - not only does it include a scene of outright, intentional genocide, including civilians, it's written in a celebratory tone and encourages the reader to cheer it on, but what really offended me so...
Quote:

Right now, Western Civilization, however much many of its members may refuse to admit it, is involved in a world war. No, it has seen no entire cities destroyed; no trenches have drawn their scars across entire continents. It is a world war all the same. Moreover, it is a world war that is putting to the test every notion of individual liberty, freedom of conscience, and rule of law that the West prizes. And should we lose we will see, or our grandchildren will, the erasure of all that is good in Western Civilization.
We cannot afford to lose.
Yet winning will have its price, too. Just as the invasion John described is ordained to change humanity into something that one of Hitler's Waffen SS would recognize and call home, so too will this war change us. Because side by side with the virtues of Western Civilization are paired vices that may destroy us: a narrow legalistic mindset, an emphasis on form over substance, and an unwillingness to do the ruthless and violent things we must if we are to survive. This list is not exhaustive. Perhaps worse than these things, however, the West has nurtured at its own breast a set of execrable, vile, treacherous and treasonous villains that seem to seek at every opportunity to do all they can to ensure its destruction.
Yet there is hope. "Survival cancels out programming."

(Typed by hand from the afterword)
THAT.

Fuck the rule of law, fuck human rights, the ends justify the means, America Uber Allies, and all that self-justifying rot with an incitement to slaughter those who disagree.

Over my shredded corpse, is that EVER gonna happen, which of course would be no deterrent to em since only a real traitor would stand by the constitution when it gets in the way, right ?
But fucked if they wouldn't pay the butchers bill to do it.

So, when I see any of these pundits selling people that line, and people chugging down the koolaid voluntarily, it makes me ill to look at.

Wulfie - on old adage comes to mind that I want you to think really hard on.
"Consider well, who you climb into bed with, whence comes the morning."

That beast isn't so pretty without it's glamour up, with the mask gone in the full light of truth - you sure you wanna keep humping away ?

So attendance estimates are at less than 100,000 people showing up (maximum estimate). Remind me again why I'm supposed to fear 0.03% of the population and their talk about how they're going to take over the country?

Hello,

That's actually quite a few people.

I consider it somewhat alarming, especially given the fact that this community organizer has added significant religious overtones to his usual rhetoric.

I had mixed feelings watching the rally. I liked the patriotism stuff, but I wasn't thrilled with all the God and Jesus stuff. I'm not an atheist, but if Beck was going to lecture us on American history by preaching with the Bible and gospel singers, someone should have warned me, but most importantly, they should have held the rally on Sunday. Sunday is the day you preach about religion and God, isn't it? Then Beck could have also avoided the 8/28 MLK controversy, not the site issue, but at least the date issue.

Didn't think this would get very far, but it was worth trying. As usual, with a few exceptions it devolved quickly into nasty generalizations and personal attacks. Nothing new.

Didn't see either rally(cracked a rib day before yesterday, haven't been paying a lot of attention to much except trying not to cough!). Would rather read up on them anyway.

I'm with Dmaan...I didn't read a lot of this thread because it was too assinine, and I'm sick to death of "you stupid libs" and "you facist right winters" and that bullshit.

I wish there were SOME way there could be less lumping all of us into two camps...I'm not Mike, far from it, and on the other side, nobody represents all of you either.

Thank you, RiverL, for describing the event. And JS also...I got a bit of the picture, and it sounds kinda like "God, God, happy, happy, God, patriotism, stir up crowd, God, take back the country, God, patriotism, God." I'm actually mollified that he went the religious route rather than the hate route too overtly, tho' I'm offended by the Son of God thing and Beck putting himself up as kind of "God's voice", as it were.

But the Nazi thing is just plain stupid, completely over the top, and didn’t need to be brought into the discussion. So are the responses. Reading it cold first thing in the morning, it just makes everyone look childish. Yes, there are aspects of facism in the right-wing extremists, especially when they bring patriotism and god into it, but taking EVERYTHING to the extreme is just plain silly. JMHO.

Thanx for the education, Frem, I’ll try to keep it in mind.

That’s scary as hell...

Cuda: bear in mind that, whatever percentage of the population they represent, you have to multiply that by the number who didn’t/couldn’t make it and stayed home and watched, but nonetheless agree with them. It’s a big enough percentage to pay attention to, unfortunately.

But Kane, YOU'RE not taking into account how many of those viewers at home watched out of curiosity; it's gotten so much play, that was inevitable. There was nothing much else going on yesterday, so of course it attracted the curious.

All in all I'm glad they had a good time, I recognize that appeal to religion is one of the excellent cornerstones of the propaganda that's been working so well and will continue to, and I'm glad it's over without incident.

I just wish substantive discussion were poss...oh, hell, why bother...

Declined to read the obviously partisan stuff and checked out Wikipedia first. It seemed to give a pretty clear description. I didn’t know this:
Quote:

Beck originally intended the rally as political, where he intended to promote his next book, The Plan, in which he would outline a century-long plan to "save the country"; but, over the 2009 Christmas holidays, Beck came to the decision to re-focus it in a non-political direction: on raising awareness and funds for the charity the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, because soliciting tax-exempt funds to pay for the rally through the charity restricts political activity. The charity receives funds collected above the amount needed to pay for the rally.
Glad to hear they made more than it cost, as when people donated, there was a tiny disclaimer that the money AFTER IT PAID FOR THE EVENT would go to the charity.

I got a somewhat less partisan crowd estimate from Wikipedia, and it disproves the various snarks about the MSM minimizing crowd size:
Quote:

A crowd estimate commissioned by CBS News reported 87,000 people attended the rally, with a margin of error of 9,000, based on aerial pictures by the company AirPhotosLive.com.

The New York Post reported "an overflow crowd of 300.000 people".[50]

The New York Times reported the crowd total to be closer to 300,000.[51]

A preliminary Associated Press article put the total at "tens of thousands", as huge crowds on the Washington Metro disrupted service on the system.

A Time Magazine article highlights the contention between the croud estiamtes, saying "No one seams to know. Glenn Beck's controversial 'Restoring Honor' rally on Saturday was bound to spark debate among media outlets. First order of contention: How many people were actually there? This isn't the first time that rally attendance estimates have caused debate.

NBC News estimated "tens of thousands who stretched from the marble steps of the Lincoln Memorial to the grass of the Washington Monument", and NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt said "tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands".

ABC News estimated "hundreds of thousands of people from around the country".

Fox News wrote about "huge crowds" and "thousands in attendance returned home carrying a message of making America better".

Republican Representative Michelle Bachmann said "We're not going to let anyone get away with saying there were less than a million here today - because we were witnesses."

So where are the cries of “partisanship” and that the MSM’s “liberal bias” would cause them to underestimate?

Post and Times both said 300,000—that represents left and right. “Preliminary” AP said “tens of thousands”...given it was preliminary, no doubt they have revised it by now. Time said “who knows?” ABC estimated “tens of thousands”, then updated it after the fact to “tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands”. ABC: “hundreds of thousands”. I’m impressed that Fox only described the crowd, tho’ I have no doubt they’ll have their own estimates by now. And Bachman, as usual, made an ass of herself.

So CBS underreported by a lot, ABC and NBC said “hundreds of thousands”, Fox didn’t put a number on it, and Bachman inflated by an incredible amount. What about your claim of underreporting? Looks to me like CBS under-estimated (I wonder if that will be their last word?) and Bachman, representing the right, went to Mars as usual, while all the others seem to have gotten pretty close.

ETA: Oh, Beck supposedly said
Quote:

"The reflecting pool holds about 200,000 people. This field back here holds about 250–300,000 people. They are not only full here, they're full in that field, they're full behind me, and they are now across the street approaching the Washington Monument!" He later said he "heard the crowd was between 300,000 and 500,000", "if that's coming from the media, God only knows."
I appreciate his saying one can't tell from media reports--tho' I'm not sure what media he's talking about as none estimated more than 300,000.

Me, I'm willing to split the difference and call it 250,000-300,000. A very healthy turnout.

Wikipedia talks about Beck’s intentions for the rally, that the date/place were (supposedly) coincidental, and gives examples of both sides both praising it and denouncing it. This is partisan, but I thought it was funny ad I’ll have to check out the originals on the net (I can always use a laugh)
Quote:

In the build up to the event, Beck attracted criticism, opposition, and mockery from various media personalities and writers. MSNBC's Keith Olbermann mockingly claimed he was worried about Glenn Beck's "sanity" after Beck said that he wanted to let "the spirit" speak through him at the rally. Comedy Central's Jon Stewart dubbed the rally "Beckapalooza" and "I Have A Scheme",[26] while Stephen Colbert announced he was ready to follow Beck in his "silver freedom spaceship that runs on human tears.”

DO bear in mind that these are ENTERTAINERS, humorists for the most part, who poke fun at all kinds of things. And if you’re honest, you have to admit that Beck, with his grand gestures, complicated chalkboard “instructions” connecting all kinds of things, and claim that sometimes “God kicks me in the pants”, etc., is a prime target for satire. If we can't laugh at ourselves, we are lost, in my opinion.

On a more serious note:
Quote:

On the internet, Jason Linkins seized on what he deemed an "insanely melodramatic video promotion of the rally, replete with Goldline scamflackery" to comedically posit that the "Glenn Beck rally will be like (the) moon landing, Wright Brothers and Rosa Parks all rolled into one massive orgasm of American history."[28] Author/activist Glenn Greenwald created a website and video entitled "Glenn Beck is Not Martin Luther King Jr.", which provided a petition featuring over 30,000 signatures the day before the rally, denouncing Beck.

A.J. Calhoun, who attended the original 1963 King rally, denounced Beck for holding a "rally of right-wingers, Tea Partiers, neoconservatives, fascists, the delusional and the truly wicked, (and) the New Kluxers disguised as patriots wanting something they cannot or will not identify openly." [Overblown rhetoric]

Beck biographer Alexander Zaitchik, author of the 2010 book Common Nonsense: Glenn Beck and the Triumph of Ignorance, also rejected Beck's embrace of the civil rights mantle, remarking:
Quote:

This is the guy who has a whole history, going back in Top 40 radio, of using racist jokes, racist humor, making fun of police brutality, and with a very deep hatred for black social justice activists. Beck stood by his claim that Obama is a racist and has frequently referred to the president's initiatives – including health care – as reparations.[I find nothing untrue in that]
According to Zaitchik, the purpose of the rally was not primarily to honor heroes, but was the fulfillment of Beck's long-held dream of holding an event on the National Mall. In elaborating on his "cynical" hypothesis, Zaitchik stated "I view this through a prism of his business – he's in a very competitive media world with many distractions and this will enable him to be the topic of conversation."

I think that last statement is right on—tho I didn’t know Beck had a drem of holding such an event.]

Bear in mind that Beck himself is the one who said he was a rodeo clown and that anyone who took him seriously was an idiot. I think he effectively utilized this opportunity to promote himself, stir up the voting block, and push home his message. Nothing wrong with that, the only thing I find offensive is his use of religion.

I leave it to our righties to give the more positive slant, snark at me and predict the "political bloodbath", as I’m sure they will/have. Just offering what I found...
