Nevada Senate candidate Sharron Angle has overhauled her communications shop, adding a series of new staff members as national Republicans fret over her falling poll numbers and shaky media performances.

Since winning the Republican nomination on June 8, Angle has suffered from a string of damaging gaffes, as well as repeated incidents in which she was captured on camera running from reporters. She recently raised eyebrows in an interview with Fox News Channel's Carl Cameron, telling the reporter that she hoped the press would be her "friend."

"We wanted them to ask the questions we want to answer so that they report the news the way we want it to be reported," Angle explained.

I saw the bit with her on Fox News saying she wanted the news reported "the way we want it to be reported". Uhhhh, unclear on the concept, are we?

GOP nominee Sharron Angle’s reported 1991 opposition to a high school football team’s black uniforms because she thought they were Satanic.

Reid’s camp has repeatedly accused Angle of being too extreme for the state, putting the GOP nominee in defensive mode. The strategy worked: Angle used to lead Reid in the polls, but the most recent survey shows a competitive contest.

A columnist in the Pahrump Valley Times reported last week that Angle led the charge against the football team wearing black uniforms, on “religious grounds.” The Tonopah High School Muckers typically wore red and white uniforms, but the coach wanted the team to wear a black uniform for one game to rev the players up on the anniversary of worst loss in the team’s history.

“Angle’s rationale for denying teenagers the right to wear black football uniforms because she believes they’re Satanic is emblematic of her entire worldview,” said Reid spokesman Kelly Steele.

This woman is a barrel of laughs! Her Republican voters seem to agree:

Sharron Angle's own supporters are tiring of their candidate's approach to policy and politics. Las Vegas Review-Journal: "Some 68 percent of those surveyed said they would have preferred if a candidate other than Angle had won the GOP primary. Among them were 71 percent of Republicans, 71 percent of nonpartisans and 64 percent Democrats. Among Angle voters, 66 percent said they would have preferred another GOP nominee.

Nearly eight of 10 voters who remain undecided or who don't like Angle or Reid say they, too, would have preferred if the staunch conservative hadn't won the June 8 primary over her more moderate foes.

That's largely good news for Reid and troubling for Angle. A year ago, the unpopular incumbent was thought to be on his way out. Instead, he's locked in a dead heat with a vulnerable GOP opponent as he runs a scorched-earth campaign to portray her as too extreme.

"Republicans thought they had this race in their pockets, but they've seen Harry Reid rise again to make it close," said Brad Coker, head of Mason-Dixon Polling & Research. "The only reason it's close is they've got a candidate who's being seen as a little out of her league."

Reid and Angle have been running neck and neck for a month, according to several Mason-Dixon polls. In the latest survey of likely Nevada voters, Reid got 45 percent support compared with 44 percent for Angle, a statistical tie.

Reid campaign spokesman Jon Summers said the survey shows that "Sharron Angle is in serious trouble, and Republicans have major buyer's remorse."

"Sharron Angle is spending money faster than it's coming in and, combined with Karl Rove's shady front group, she has outspent our campaign by more than a quarter million dollars in the last two weeks without moving the needle," Summers said. "After throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Senator Reid, support for Angle's extreme and dangerous agenda is as low as ever."

Recently filed FEC “Report of Receipts and Disbursements” that covers the period of 4/1/10 to 5/19/10 by the Friends of Sharron Angle campaign committee paint a very different picture from what she is saying on the campaign trail about herself and about her opponent Harry Reid.

Quoted from an interview with Jon Ralston:

“After she had criticized Reid during the primary race for not doing enough to bring jobs to Nevada, Ralston challenged Angle when she was later quoted as saying it is not the responsibility of a U.S. Senator to create jobs, instead the task belongs to state government.”

This is something that her campaign believes in and practices. According to Schedule B “Itemized Disbursements”. The campaign committee spent only $23,729.91 in the state of Nevada to businesses in non-media purchases. $2,400.00 of that $23,729.00, the committee paid in rent, that was then donated back to them by the company. The campaign committee did spend $178,827.62 out of state to businesses with 95% of that total in and around Washington D.C./Virginia and owes an additional $170,620.13 to those same firms from previous purchases not included in this filing.

From her campaign’s Web site:

“Sharron Angle believes we must close the loopholes in the campaign finance system while requiring immediate disclosure of contributions, via the Internet.”

The PAC Tea Party Express bought $258,752.00 worth of advertising and the PAC Club for Growth bought an additional $277,211.00 spending $208,000.00 of the $277,211.00 in one day, during the period of the FEC filing. Are these the loopholes that she is referring to, but using none the less?

From her campaign’s Web site:

“Angle benefits from overwhelming generosity from grassroots, small-dollar donors.”

An analysis of the “Itemized Receipts” reveals that donations from Nevada were $45,221.50, out of state donations were $61,260.50, and another $184,222.51 in donations were classified as “Unitemized” This is not a grassroots effort when the three PACs spent $536,263.00 and her donations were only $290,704.51.

From her campaign’s Web site:

“The fastest way to get the economy moving again is to cut spending.”

As of May 19, 2010, her campaign had spent $1,121,479.74 and is $38,601.54 in the hole.

“Do as I say, not as I do” seems to be the mantra of this campaign.
