Media outlets are reporting an oil rig off of the La. coast exploded, thus introducing an indeterminate amount of delicious oil to the gulf coast.

Clean up crews are hopefully in good shape, and well practiced. No word yet on whether or not this is a disaster on scale with the previous spill, though initial reports would suggest otherwise.

Yeah. Could be faulty engineering the oil industry and the regulators have that going in spades, but I wouldn't rule out sabotage just yet.

Also, if this WAS a sabotage, and it turns out someone did it to protest the Deepwater Horizon Spill, I'ma headdesk so hard it'll be heard around the world. It's not likely, but it's my personal worst case scenario for critical loss of faith in all of humanity.

Hello,

I didn't see this earlier.

I guess we wait and see how bad it is.

I hadn't heard about it yet either. Hope it's not too bad; that's all they need!

Not sure how it would help them with the Deep Water, but you'd hear a LOT more than from me if it was on purpose!

curious: why would it occur to folks that this could be sabotage, or protest?

perhaps it is payback for the tragic shooting of James Lee, the Discovery Freedom Fighter?

Well, it's pretty close in time frame, relatively speaking, to the other disaster. Or at least close enough that people still remember it. But it's also far enough removed in time that people aren't really paying attention anymore. One is a reason to suspect the incident, the other is a potential motive.

Anyway, I can't think of any possibilities either way to explain the time frame beyond either bad engineering across oil rigs in the gulf as a whole or sabotage for some political or monetary reason.

I have a very negative view of human nature, being human myself and familiar with how nasty we are. But, still, don't folks go about their wretched malfeasance with some sort of gain in mind? How would blowing up an oil rig and further devastating an already ruined region benefit anyone? Please note that my tone is not meant to be accusatory, but rather confused.

Also, La. belongs to the river and the sea, and will be reclaimed and drowned. Can't be stopped; might as well abandon it.

Me, too...I don't see any way it would benefit them. And yes, my thoughts don't go directly to sabotage/conspiracy on stuff; I'm learning a lot by being here, but most of the time I just don't see life a all that conspiratorial.

Yes, New Orleans and that area is a pretty absurd situation; but mankind builds in all kinds of stupid places and won't be driven off, so that's just the way it goes. I had already heard from a friend in Illinois who knows the area long ago that the keep getting wiped out and rebuilding. Must be the same kind of mentality as our "river rats" up at the Russian River...they do the same, despite the River flooding on almost an annual basis.

Strange little species, we are, we are...

Add a fair portion of the Central Valley to that list. For example, several commuter communities around here were built in a historic flood plain, and no amount of levees can guarantee their long term safety. Actually add LA (not La.) to that last, too, as certain portions of it are losing a battle with the mountains and seasonal fires and floods. I am cheering loudly for the fires and floods and mountains.

For more on the subject of humans building in dangerous, stupid places, and then whining when the inevitable occurs, I highly recommend The Control of Nature by John McPhee.

There's plenty of people who this could benefit if not the oil companies, as morbid as this seems. And I even think oil companies could, I mean they are competing you know, take out your rival and make more money when there are less suppliers. If there isn't some crazy scheme to drive down supply to drive up prices.

Green groups could benefit by showing the evils of oil, the right wing can get people good and angry over the lack of response by the Obama administration. If you can't think of someone who might benefit who doesn't care about a bunch of poor (black) fisherman, fish, or birds, you're not being creative enough.

I thought of another possibility. It might be that the previous explosion destabilized subsurface strata all across the region. I think I found my new worst case scenario!

Although I still plan to epic facepalm if it comes out this was sabotage.

I was just thinking we needed another oil spill since the last one went over so well.

At least I wont have to marinate my shrimp this year...

Unfortunately, the instant spill seems rather tame compared to BP's mess. However, there is a really big fire, which is a plus.

Hmm. Remember how they downplayed Deepwater at first. I wouldn't ever trust the initial estimates. Those are generally more PR than data.

Mincing: Absolutely. The Los Angeles are was built in a desert (ESPECIALLY Las Vegas, which was PURE desert before they got their hands on it!), and is a prime example of mankind thinking they can change nature to suit themselves, instead of using their brains and building where nature would accept them!

Byte, when it comes to oil companies competing, given how MANY oil wells there are in the Gulf (NOAA maps apparently show 3858 oil and gas platforms extant in the Gulf of Mexico), it would sure take a lot of work to make a serious dent in anyone's profits, wouldn't it?

It's no matter, we'll probably never know, I just find it hard to imagine sabotage in this instance, that's all.
