Greetings, Browncoats! Just a friendly reminder/request to Canadian Browncoats to cast their votes in our federal election on Monday, June 28.

Also, if you're depressed about current election options with more prominent parties, don't forget that recent changes to our election rules provides something like $1.75 in funding for every vote a party gets ... so protest voting CAN help a fringe party stay in the game. Just food for thought.

All the best to everyone!

Cheers,

Just a few hours and all you Eastern Browncoats will be deciding the fate of the country.

See you at the polls!

You know, I almost voted for the PCs (my local guy is an old pal of mine!) but couldn't because of Harper (or as I like to call him, Mini-Bush).

So I voted Green! And they got funding for the next election! I'm happy about that!

I ended up doing the same thing. At first, I hadn't even heard of them, as the big media guys were doing a pretty good job of keeping them out of print/TV debates. Then the fact that they were running someone in every riding and not being allowed into debate (when the Bloc was only running in Quebec) really ticked me off.

At least three people other than myself in our riding ended up voting Green after I mentioned them and the above nonsense. In our riding, they came in a respectable 3rd place. I'm glad they'll qualify for funding in the next election.

I'm just really happy we've got a minority government ... I'm of the opinion that the best governing happens in those situations.

^^^ well baby we are just two peas in a pod eh?

And I completely agree that the current government minority will produce great debate and with any luck bring about some desperately needed changes.

I wonder what the other Canadian browncoats voted?

I'm not normally one to discuss my vote, as I like the concept of a private election. But out here in Alberta, in year 22 or so of the Conservative ultra-majority that makes the recent years of the national Liberal majority look like a highly cooperative venture, I've become greatly disenchanted with the process.

(There are good reasons why our premier is often referred to as "King Ralph".)

However, I still feel it is vitally important to make one's voice heard through the process, not by ignoring it. Ignore our rights long enough and we'll find out the right no longer exists.

Yeah ... I honestly don't get the concept of protesting elections by not bothering to vote, or better yet, running yourself if you're that damn ticked off by everything.

Along the same lines, I don't really get the concept of protesting government by bombing, etc. Seems highly counterproductive to me, both modern and historical.

^^^ Oh about not voting: I think you're thinking about certain CBC talking heads who like to "be hip with the youth" during vote time and create a TV show (I forget the name of that smarmy host... I think his show is called "Play")... I noted the sly label of "apathy" applied to the young voters even though they aren't.. particularly.

The CBC is far more guilty of apathy than young'uns, in my humble opinion. I've a friend who is a CBC editor so I'm pretty sure this is an accurate opinion. Just remember - most CBC people are talentless Ryerson grads without one frelling clue what they are doing.

Protesting by bombing, known as terrorism, is a long tradition that people and governments have had to deal with for centuries.

The real question is why has "our" responce to terrorism changed? Changed into WAR.

I heard the 'youth=voter apathy' labelling on many media, possibly more on Global than CBC. The daytime CBC Radio 1 was actually pretty decent in its coverage ... they gave the Greens, for example, a fairly good shot at adding their perspective to the official debates during replays of the events.

Have you ever read "Very Proper Charlies"? It's a short SF story ... the author escapes me at the moment but it is old ... a good 30 years for sure, possibly older. It is all about an alternate way to deal with terrorism than war. An excellent read.

Oh yea, I did catch that on CBC Radio about the Greens. You know, from what you've said I wonder if people didn't give the Greens a sympathy vote just to protest thie being excluded! Hmm, maybe that's why I voted for them (certainly wasn't thier platform *chuckle*).

*Googles a little* --> Very Proper Charlies.

I know two people who gave the Greens their vote because they were excluded from debate.

And I think Dean Ing is the correct author. I don't have the anthology that story is in handy at the moment.

The Greens are rather popular with the PEI crowd here in Charlottetown. There were signs up all over town!

Oh... I prolly won't be posting anymore due to time constraints, so email me if you get the title. Great to chat with you always.
