...or maybe the much-looked-for End Times?
Quote:

A small asteroid passed within the moon's distance from the Earth on Wednesday morning, and another will do likewise later in the day, space watchers say.

The double encounter is an unusual event that shows the need for closer monitoring of near space for Earth-threatening encounters, according to NASA.

The objects don't pose a threat to Earth, and they will not be visible to the naked eye, said Donald Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near Earth Program, which tracks potentially hazardous asteroids and comets within 28 million miles of Earth.

Roughly 50 million objects pass through near-Earth space each day, Yeomans said. But what makes this situation noteworthy is that these two asteroids are passing so close to Earth on the same day and that NASA spotted them so far in advance.

"Things like this happen every day that we simply don't know about because we don't have the telescopes large enough to find them or surveys that are looking full-time," he said. "This demonstrates the system's working on some level, but we need larger telescopes and more of them to find objects that are coming this close."

Yeomans described the discovery as a warning shot in a field of study of low-probability events with global, high-impact consequences. He said that it was only when scientists began looking for near-Earth objects in the 1990s that they realized there was a "problem."

"We have only recently appreciated how many of these objects are in near Earth's space and [it's] best that we keep track of them and find them," he said. "I think this is Mother Nature's way of firing a shot over the bow and warning Earth-based astronomers that we have a lot of work to do."

Hello,

Even if we knew about an Earth-Killer a year in advance, I'm not sure there's much we could do. There are treaties in place preventing the weaponization of space, and we don't even have a weapon currently that is capable of diverting or obliterating a large threat object. Current technology nuclear weapons have been found to be alarmingly ineffective in damaging Objects In Space.

The best we could do with advanced warning is to construct a vastly insufficient number of badly stocked shelters. We are simply not prepared for an Earth-changing event, and preparing for one would take at least a decade if not more. We are unlikely to get that degree of advanced warning. So either we need to make orbital defense a priority, or we just need to accept the danger and hope it doesn't happen.

Anthony, think of the analogy of the Titanic and the iceberg. Had the captain known of the berg when the boat was still 100 miles away, he could have altered course less than one degree and completely missed the thing.

Similarly, when such a dinosaur-killer asteroid is more than a year out, that is the ideal time to hit with with something, anything. You only need alter its course an infinitesimal amount to make it miss Earth (and of course, you also want to make sure you're making it miss Earth for thousands of subsequent orbits as well!)

Hello Mike,

I agree, the sooner we know about it, the easier it will be to move it.

But since we have nothing in place to move it, the point is moot. We would have to develop a robust orbital defense system capable of not only detecting these things a great distance away, but delivering a payload (not necessarily a bomb. Could be a massive drone with big thrusters for all I know) capable of moving it.

We don't have these things, and we don't care about these things. The investment necessary in preparing these things is huge, and the will to spend money in space is virtually nonexistant. Ask anyone to pump trillions into orbit, and they'll laugh you out of the room. "Much bigger fish to fry much closer to home," they'll say. Better to build schools, provide better medicine, feed the poor, or invade middle-eastern nations. Depending on one's agenda.

All we would have to do is relocate every human on Earth to Texas and have them all jump up and down simultaneously. This would slightly alter the Earth's orbit and cause the asteroid to miss us. "It's simple physics" as our recently departed member used to say.

Hello,

I question the physics, but the point is moot.

There's no way Texas would allow that many immigrants into their state. Especially not to take 'orbital adjustment' jobs away from American citizens.
