Eight Dems Arrested in Bell, CA 'Corruption on Steroids' - Not a Single Mention of Party Affiliation From Media

By Lachlan Markay
Tue, 09/21/2010 - 15:19 ET

"Today, eight city council members were arrested in Bell, California for what Los Angeles County District Attorney labeled "corruption on steroids." Thus far, every major news outlet that has reported on the story has omitted the fact that all eight individuals arrested are Democrats.

These glaring omissions come only weeks after NewsBusters reported that of the 351 stories on the then-brewing controversy, 350 had omitted party affiliations, and one had mentioned they were Democrats only in apologizing for not doing so sooner.

ABC, CBS, the Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press, Bloomberg, USA Today, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and the San Francisco Chronicle all reported on the arrests today without mentioning party affiliations.

One commenter at CNN's online story got it spot on: "I notice there is no mention of the party affiliation of the accused. I can find no mention of it in any story on the internet. This must mean they were all Democrats."

Give the man a cigar.

Together, the eight city officials "misappropriated" $5.5 million in municipal funds. Robert Rizzo, the chief culprit, was arrested on 53 counts of various brands of corruption.

Before the scandal came to light, Rizzo had been making roughly $1.5 million per year, even though the per capita income in Bell is roughly half the national average.

Pedro Carillo, Bell's interim city manager, released a statement on the arrests today:

Given the sheer volume of charges levied against former Bell Chief Administrative Officer Robert Rizzo and former Assistant CAO Angela Spaccia by the district attorney, it is clear that Rizzo and Spaccia were at the root of the cancer that has afflicted the City of Bell. Also, it is a sad day for Bell that four current and two former members of the council also have been arrested. I am prepared to double down our efforts to continue to restore order, establish good government reforms, and to ensure that Bell is providing needed services to its residents.

Despite arrests in one of the most massive cases of municipal corruption in recent memory, no media outlet could bring itself to mention the officials' party affiliations, a fact that has been widely reported since the scandal entered the national spotlight."

So why did the media, in 350 stories, FAIL to mention they're all DEMOCRATS? Isn't that odd?

The following is not an accusation, but merely a question.

What is the relevance of their political affiliation? Is political affiliation always, or ever, relevant when someone is accused of a crime?

POLITICAL affiliation might be considered relevant by some, considering they're all POLITICIANS! I wonder though if they had been Republicans, if the media would have also not mentioned that little fact.

I wasn't suggesting it was irrelevant. I would agree that their political affiliation matters, inasmuch as they are politicians charged with corruption. This wouldn't be the case if they were just politicians charged with soliciting sex in a public bathroom...oh never mind.

As a Californian, and a Democrat, I would also grant you that in California "corrupt politician" is synonymous with "democrat" while "incompetent politician" generally means Republican. Hence, there was probably little doubt in anyone's mind that the assholes in Bell were democrats...

You wouldn't be suggesting that democrats are more likely that republicans to be corrupt; just that the media was squeamish about turning this into a Democratic scandal, as opposed to a local matter?

Sort of like the way they often leave out the race of suspect, right?

Ask yourself that question, next time a Republican is accused of anything.

You'll see the (R) next to their name, or spoken of so much, you'll probably think their folks named them "Republican" at birth.

Yet across the board, when a mayor gets busted for smoking crack in a hotel room w/ a hooker, or a congressman has 90 K $ stuffed into his freezer at home, look for which party they're a member. If there's no party affiliation in the story, you can rest assured, they're a Democrat.

Think I'm making this stuff up ?

Quote:

Former Rep. William Jefferson was sentenced Friday to serve 13 years in prison for what the lead prosecutor described as "the most extensive and pervasive pattern of corruption in the history of Congress."

While the sentence by federal Judge T.S. Ellis III fell well short of the 27 to 33 years recommended by the government, it is by the far the stiffest jail term ever imposed on a member or former member of Congress for crimes committed while in office.

Jefferson, 62, was found guilty Aug. 6 on 11 charges, including soliciting bribes, depriving citizens of honest service, money laundering and using his office as a racketeering enterprise.

He was acquitted of five other charges in a case that famously featured the revelation that he had hidden $90,000 in the freezer of his home, marked bills from the FBI that prosecutors said was going to be used as a bribe.

Jefferson stood stoically as the sentence was read, his head cocked slightly to the left, showing no obvious emotion.

Jong,

Perhaps you are unaware that city council positions in California are not partisan positions, meaning that party affiliation plays no part in campaigning or in actually governing, so party affiliation is entirely irrelevant in this case. This is quite different from legislative positions at either the state or federal level, where party affiliation is always involved. But since you seem to be hung up on it, let me inform you that the mayor of the city of Vernon, (an industrial town close to Bell with a budget around $30 million but only 90 handpicked residents) was recently convicted of corruption - convicted, not accused - and he is a Republican. And there are rumors (unproven, but many of them) that council of the City of Industry - another town comprised almost entirely of businesses and with a very small population - is corrupt as can be, and they're all Republicans too.

As best I can tell, neither party has a lock on either corruption or decent behavior. Though I have to confess that the scumbags in Bell have taken the practice to a new and astonishing level. It looks like they didn't do anything that wasn't corrupt.

You say there was not a single mention of it in "the media" - or rather, you post up an article claiming that.

So is the writer not a journalist, or not in the media, or is she lying? I mean, the fact that you posted her article says that it was indeed mentioned IN THE MEDIA.

Kwicko,

1. I posted an article from a website.

2. Then I asked a couple of very simple questions.

Instead of deflecting, just deal directly with the issue raised.

The main question of interest was....why didn't ABC, CBS, the Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press, Bloomberg, USA Today, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and the San Francisco Chronicle report the "full" truth to the public including party affiliation for these elected city officials?

Do you have a reasonably rational answer for that question?

Also conspicuous in its absence of any mention in the "article" is FauxNews. Did they not report on party affiliation either? Or are they not considered "media"? (We already know they're not considered "reporters", "journalists", or "news")

I'm sure you'll point out that that's more "deflection", though. Apparently you're supposed to be able to just spew any inane bullshit, and someone asking questions is "deflecting" from your "story".

By the way, I think it's cute that you think that "the main question" in this whole story isn't about embezzlement, fleecing the town and the taxpayers, or crime and dishonesty - nope, as far as YOU are concerned, the main question is of party affiliation.

Says a lot about your priorities, doesn't it?

Always relevant, since the voters elected them, and are only allowed to vote for them in 1 party's primary election.

On TV, our Republican Skull & Bones mayor in Knoxville TN simply claimed he was a Democrat when voters became extremely irate at his many crimes, and the TV news anchor just laughed (who was his former "deputy mayor" at $100,000/year). That's Victor "Victoria" Ashe, GW Bush's former roommate, fellow cheerleader and gay lover at all-male Yale. He was arrested twice in DC and Atlanta while dressed as a woman and soliciting men in public restrooms. He got promoted to ambassador to Poland, in charge of CIA torture death camps.

Demorats and Republicon parties must both be banned forever, and their members stripped of all voting rights, as members of organized crime and racketeering enterprises.

Not true, unless your state has a closed primary. Many states have open primaries, where you just show up and vote for your favorite candidate regardless of party affiliation.

Shouldn't your voting rights be stripped, then? After all, you *SAY* you were in the military, whom you also claim are organized crime and racketeering enterprises.

And what would you say if your rights WERE stripped, as you'd so gladly do to everyone else?

Hmmm.... It prolly has more to do with the fact that when you're running for City Council, your party affiliation is NEVER mentioned. Not in your flyers and not on the ballot. So they don't run as Democrats or as Republicans or as... anything, for that matter. Kind of like judges and sheriffs.

Generally, City Council is considered non-partisan, in that the candidates don't get funding or support from national or state party committees, so their political affiliations are incidental.

Man, I leave for three weeks and the bullshit smells worse than ever.

I had wondered what party they belonged to, and I noticed that it wasn't mentioned anywhere.

And it's relevant because one party or the other is going to use it sooner or later, probably sooner, to hang it around the other party's neck. Pretty soon commercials are going to be seen linking it to EVERY Democratic party candidate for everything--

" Do you want Democrat Joe Blow for your Mayor? He's just like those Democrats from Bell..."

"Jerry Brown is a Democrat, and supported those guys in Bell. Are you SURE you want him for governor?"

" Boxer, Feinstein, Bell, 3 of a kind..."

"The mess in Bell is Obama's fault..."

" Your dog licensing fees are going up, to increase the salaries of corrupt Democrat city officials like Joe Blow, the dog catcher from Bell. Vote for Republican Mr. John Smith for dogcatcher. He'll clean up the tax and spend mess in your city, and throw a net over those bad politicians. And he'll clean up the mess on your sidewalk , too."

Sig, GREAT to see you back!!! But you're right...and didn't expect otherwise, it stinks as bad as ever, and is silly to boot.

You're right, of course, city council positions have nothing to do with party affiliations, AND, if the Repubs need to point to city council people doing something wrong, boy, are they running out of material! Which they won't, because both parties commit bullshit and there's PLENTY to go around.

Trying to make a big deal out of it is so pathetic...all this long thread about , "but look what THEY did", "No, look what THEY did"...my gawd, don't we have more interesting things to argue about with all that's going on in the world? This is a non-story, essentially equal to Limbaugh's recent faux pas disappearing, so call it even and get on with it, for heaven's sake!

I love this Bell, California story. It reminds me of an old episode from The Andy Griffith Show where a gang of crooks from Mount Pilot tried to use Mayberry as their new base of operations. Fortunately, town drunk Otis overheard one of them on the phone and he notified Deputy Fife. Barney then went after them with his one bullet loaded revolver, but he tripped over the doormat and got captured by the bad guys. Later, Sheriff Andy, along with some North Carolina State Troopers were able to round 'em all up and toss them in the Mayberry Jail. Aunt Bea made a cherry pie that night to celebrate their safe return and heroics.

Gawd, that's about it, RL...the absurdity of some political crooks is hysterical...pathetic, especially if they get away with stuff, but still hysterical.

But as to the title and intent of this thread, it's equally hysterical...there are crooks on both sides of the aisle, and few seems to care enough to do anything about it, even enough to trip over doormats to try and catch them (which heaven knows the cops are good at)!

Sorry, but I don't believe it had anything to do with suicide, because he usually kept the chamber empty. He would, however, with a fairly steady hand, load that one bullet into the gun if there was danger afoot.

I am not a human being; I am an abstraction and an account.

In terms of canon, Barney only has a single bullet because that is all Andy will trust him with. But sometimes I like to think of Barney as a tortured soul, who carries a single bullet because that it all he will need to end his suffering.

I would gladly live in Mayberry.

Your alien brain sees things in a very dark manner. Barney had a lot going on for himself. For starters, a pretty, sweet, and smart girlfriend who loved him, lots of great friends, a steady job, time off to go fishing, to play checkers, to go on picnics, and lots of other fun things. Plus, always a few bucks tucked away to maintain his single guy w/ steady girlfriend lifestyle. If he was indeed tortured in his soul as you keep saying, then perhaps there's new found hope for all of us in these tough times. We'll find strength, when needed most, from his courageous struggle, his brave face will help guide us in dealing with our own inner demons.

I only think of Barney as a tortured soul because it amuses me to do so, not because the show portrays him as a brooding Byronic hero. The Andy Griffith Show is absolutely not tortured. There is nothing dark about it. That's part of the shows appeal. But it may be time for a newer, edgier take on an American Classic.
