I saw this girl stealing. Three separate occasions. Not a poor girl. Last time I confronted her and told her taking things was wrong. She acted like she didn't know that. I consulted loss prevention & the assistant manager- the former said, "I dunno, these things are... complicated..." as he watched video of her stealing. The assistant manager said, "I wouldn't say anything to her; I could get in trouble."
She was taking maybe $5 worth a day.

Same shit from my last job.

Don't work too hard, don't care so much; don't rock the boat.

Why is this country so fucked up right now?
Gee, tell me, please.

"Planes from a major airport aimed at major targets in the U.S.??? You must be kidding me! If I pass shit like THAT up the line & it's wrong, it'll be my ASS!!! Fuck you [name missing], keep shit like that to yourself, or you're done here, asshole."

See, ultra-conservative dorks that love the direction our country is going in never have been able to fully address this- the deification of the corporation.
And corporations are essentially para-wanna-be-military in nature.
So, THEIR America is the one of Columbus cutting off the hands of slaves not finding enough gold, or Reaganomic-on-fire-tires surrounding the bodies of the peeps that resisted the Contra "Freedom Fighters".

Chain of command. More important than intelligent contribution or analysis.

You peeps that accept this suck.*

Corporations paid over 50% of the taxes in the 1950's (A time when the owners were just extremely well-off); now they pay 5% (Now they are obscenely well-off).

The American way... I wonder exactly what that means.

I vaguely remember parents (afore divorce) equating that to making it on your own... or maybe it was owning a house? I dunno, didn't understand much back then so I stayed absorbed in my legos.

From what I remember growing up, the American way seems to be redistributing prosperity. One of the few things the 'rents could agree on was the fact that we were "very fortunate" which I still didn't quite understand, so I stuck with the legos.

Then one day I had an epiphany. Maybe people are actually like legos. They aren't the same and don't all fit in the same places, so maybe we shouldn't try to make them. Then my little sister stole some. I got angry at her, but I also got mom to get her some of her own for Christmas.

I guess that's the American way. Can't stop those "less fortunate" from stealing, so just give stuff to them later and hope they get better. Did I get it right?

There's your problem right there.

Figure out why that girl doesn't understand how stealing is wrong, and why your bosses are so nervious about calling her on it, and you'll know what happened to The American Way.

Consider that she has probably been told all her life that she's entitled, just by existing, to whatever she wants. She's been told all about her rights, but no one mentioned responsibilities. She knows that there are plenty of people who will support her if she calls accusations of theft discrimination.

Technically Bernie Madoff just chaired for NASDAQ. If he was more important in the scheme of things, he wouldn't have been arrested and put on trial.

Not that he didn't do what they accused him of. Because he did. Someone just exposed him, most likely as a retaliation or pre-emptive strike for exactly what he got caught for, since he pissed a lot of people off with his investment scheme.

But you're right in that he may have a hand in some other stuff on the side, which no one will call him on because it would incriminate everyone involved.

Almost. I see it more as my reality growing up. When my sister wanted to use my perfectly intact and sharp red crayon, I would laugh at her and tell her to fuck off and get her own. Only when my crayon was snapped into pieces so small as to be unholdable would I give it to her. See, she didn't have crayons(welfare case), however I recognized she had other toys to play with and thought she should be happy and content with which she had or get her own crayons(conservative philosophy) until my crayons trickled down(brilliant economic model)to her and she would not be thankful for what she got, who would be?. It was this way of life that created a doctor, a nurse, and a broker from a small "economically humble" family. The harsh reality that no one is going to give you anything of VALUE, sure you can wait for their scraps and be happy, But if you want something go and earn it...go get your own or you will never REALLY get the whole crayon... just a small piece and be stuck forever desiring other peoples shit(Liberals)

That is the American way....sadly both ways.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

This scenario is very odd to me, considering the number of people I've seen be fired for theft. If there was no proof (such as video) management would grind their teeth over suspicion and speculation, but if there was any proof, swift termination would follow. Usually some kind of "wrongful termination" lawsuit would also follow, but I was never given any details on those. Being caught on tape can't have helped anyone's case.

Once again, it goes back to why your shoplifter girl doesn't think she's doing wrong. Why she's been taught that what she's doing isn't wrong. Why she thinks she's entitled to do what she wants, with no consequences. Why she'll demand her rights and give no thought to her responsibilities to others.

Another thing to consider is the main difference between shoplifter girl and crooked bankers, businessmen, brokers, etc.

She really doesn't understand that what she's doing is wrong, whereas the rich crooks do - and even joke about their cleverness in getting away with stuff.

I'm not sure which is more discouraging.

Maybe she's a Future Tea-Bagger! She's living The American Dreamâ„¢ (New and Improved! Now Made In China!) - she can do whatever she wants because that's the way America works now. Do what you want, and if it blows up in your face, you'll get a bail-out from the Republicans if you're rich enough! And there's no pesky regulations to keep you from doing anything wrong, because you have the right to do whatever you want, and none of the responsibilities when it all goes to hell!

You've just seen the tea-baggers' vision of the perfect patriot, Chris.

Kwicko it now occurs to me that my theory on the American Way came from German toys (legos are German right?) and that is unamerican. I like baseball but have never eaten an apple pie. I fear I am unable at this point and to truely grasp what is American.

Unless Jazz counts. Using the Jazz analogy, does America become an inconsistant force based around a fundamental theme developed and tweaked by each individual player that takes the lead for a point in time. We do kind of long for the older days of Miles Davis or Louie Armstrong when we get tired of the 'cut sessions' (basically a 'look what I can do' solo that looses all musicality and artistry but impressess those musically unsophisticated with the shear number of high notes or fast passages).

It does get better Chris, but that takes time, and often you don't get to see the impact, just the crater.

The hellcamps are gone, various other social issues are being addressed, and of course no one trusts the Catholic Church so much any more...

But still, from that point, fifteen to thirty YEARS for the wounds to heal, and all the while the same kind of shitheads trying to slash new ones, the same way our so-called "protectors" actually started the shit we're mired in back in 1953 when they capped Mossedeigh - and we'll be choking on the blowback from our current idiocy for about that long.

In order for things to GET BETTER, first, we gotta stop doin the damage, and we're workin on that, but it's a matter of numbers, gotta get enough pebbles rolling to cause the avalanche, to turn the tide around, and that was the plan, first cut off the means to strangle and slaughter the consciousness of the empathic, the visionaries, that social progress REQUIRES.

Sweden, about fifteen years ago, made a single change in how they treated their young, and socially they're just that far ahead of us as a direct result.

So, mainly it's two fronts to it - we need to stop mangling the psyches of our young in the name of mashing them to fit into a society gone rabid...

And we need to realize and accept that our so-called protectors are actually predators, and the primary threat and source of much of our social misery - which, since no other method at this time can be accomplished without massive bloodshed, we need to stop FUNDING.

Cause that's what it all comes down to - cut off the MONEY, and you slice the arteries of the beast, then it will bleed to death.

If but one teenage punk with a grudge, starting out, could accomplish so much as I have, consider well what might happen if you no longer had to hope single visionaries caught a miracle and slipped through the cracks of a system designed to eliminate them, but rather were given the support and resources to act, rather than having to steal them, piecemeal, in the dark ?

It all comes down to breaking the cycle of abuse, because if you break it in the people, the family, you will break it in government soon after, and nationally, then worldwide.

Because what is our treatment of other nations, truly, but the action of a violent father who wins out simply because he is larger and stronger, not because he is right ?

Sometimes, it *IS* that simple, Chris.

You nearly bring tears to my eyes with your eloquence, Frem. Or maybe I just have an allergy...
In any case, Buddha bless you.
I wish you could be The President. Superman would definitely approve.
