Watching the rescue operation on t.v. now... I was curious as to why they have a giant Texas flag on site, right in front of the recovery area.

Turns out, the Chilean and Texas stat flags are nearly identical.

Atascosa County apparently agrees...

Although it wouldn't be much of a surprise to see a Texas flag on site. Wherever there's drilling to be done, you'll likely find a crew from Texas.

I wonder how atheists feel about the miners dropping to their knees in prayer and thanks to God?

No such thing as an atheist in a foxhole... or a collapsed mineshaft?

Maybe there is a reason for that?

How do atheists feel? I would imagine they don't even notice...they'd have to be used to religion being inserted into everyday life all the time. I can't say for sure, and I guess an atheist here will have to speak up, or maybe if/when Jennifer Kaylee joins us, she'll say--as she is one.

Why do people thank God? Because most everyone wants to think on some level that there is someone with power outside their own who can decide their fate and, that if they pray to that person or appease them, that god will intercede on their behalf.

Did you really need to ask? When people are in desperate places and feel they have little power over their lives, they turn to something beyond themselves. That's why religion BEGAN (that and a need to explain the unexplainable).

DREAMTROVE

I have to say that in this, as in the earthquake, Chile has shown us how a real nation acts. I'm happy that this is getting the coverage that it is, including the "we helped" part, because there's a faint glimmer of hope that people might expect a little better of their govt. then shoving people into a Superdome, or pouring golf balls down an oil spill.

As long as we're going to do "opinions on how this can apply to something it has nothing to do with" I'll add this: At last, a solution of what to do with our latino immigrants: Vote them into office ;)

Seriously though, there are countries that work, and we should follow their examples.

Also, this has been gnawing at me: Empires can't work. They create too much cash and power in one place, and that attracts rats. All you have to be is larger than the other plates of cheese, and you'll get most of the rats. This is probably the best argument I've run into for dissolving the USA. NY, CA and TX would still have rats, but maybe we could kick them out of KY et al.

ONLY 7 TO GO as of this writing. How wonderful to have something positive to think about, even if just for a few hours!

There will always be empires, or attempts to create empires. That's just the way it is. They take different appearances, but they're still empires. Not to worry; ours is waning, faster than ever before. There will be another to take our place...China probably? And another after them. Mankind has not learned from history (or rather, governments haven't), so is doomed to repeat it until we DO, if ever.

Of course they don't work...for long. They come, they bloat, they go. I'm not sure anyone here ever said empires "work", did they? It's been "our time" for a long time now, and most Americans never considered us an "empire". Our time is passing.

As to Chile, in my opinion it has its good points and its bad points, just like any other country. We're not better or worse than most other countries, except possibly in that we're too big and diverse to govern, and that our government is too big and cumbersome to respond when needed...among other things.

Spoken as true to someone without faith, belief or hope.

Nothing less than I thought.

I don't really care for an atheists belief system, it just seems so sad, blind, and hopeless.

But, it takes all kinds I guess.

There can't be light without dark, so I'm sure they serve some purpose.

Seems one of the miners might be in a deeper hole now that he's back up to the surface. Turns out his wife AND his long-time mistress were there waiting for him! D'OH!!!

Time like this, though, I might think they're actually both glad to have him back alive. At least for now.

Rap,

My father was a mining engineer. My middle name comes from the town in WV we were living in when I was born. During college I worked summers in coal mines in Ky and OH. (worked myself up to shot fireman where I got to place and set off the explosives) I watched the whole miracle.

My hat is off to those miners who managed to survive and remain sane for the 17 days it took people to find them. Miners as a whole are a tough lot but these hombres rasised the bar.

The president of Chile also shone through. He put his personal and national ego aside and accepted help from anyone (unlike Putin with the Kursk and Obama with the gulf). He's a leader who actually cares about his people.

I, too, followed it on the news periodically, but I didn't sit there and watch the whole thing, or even the last guy coming out--it was rerun in capsule form on the news, and will be for days I'm sure.

I'm thrilled they got them out, impressed by how they did it in far less time than had been estimated, very impressed that Chile's President stuck around and "stuck it out" with them the way he did, and equally impressed by how Chile dealt with the whole thing.

Now, if we could just do something about the conditions in the mines and the lack of responsibility of the mine owners in this country, maybe there wouldn't be as much need for holding of breath, scrambling to rescue and mourning the dead... Just a thought...

What are conditions in Chile's mines, does anyone know?

No one would ever have doubted, Wulf, that you fully and fervently believe in a god. Given your penchant for mythical figures and Rambo videos, it could be no other way.

Light and dark are scientific principles; if you mean philosophical light and dark, of course they need one another, but it has nothing to do with any god. Greed and convenience bring out the worst in people; tradgedies and disasters bring out both the best AND the worst, and make people braver or more frightened, according to the person. It is also, unquestionably, the power of their own faith itself that gives them incredible strength to withstand difficulties, as here. But it was acts of the GODness in HUMANS that got them out, that went beyond the pale to make something very difficult happen. I've no doubt in some cases it was the strength of the workers' faiths that helped drive them, too.

So yeah, there's all kinds of power in faith, no question about it. Faith is in the human brain; the human brain is capable of things we've not even begun to dream of. That doesn't mean there's a god. JMHO.

Me, I'm just absolutely thrilled those 33 people made it out, that the workers can bask in their well-deserved praise, and that the familes and friends of the miners have their loved ones back. And I'll happily sing the praises of the humans, science and technology that got them out, to the sky. THAT is the miracle, and it doesn't happen often, and it's fantastic to think about something that positive for a while.

And yeah, that guy is gonna be back in a much blacker hole in no time at all!

Too true. Chile's President did a magnificent job of reaching out and getting the best and the brightest to get the job done. There was no bickering over red tape, no fretting over whether union goons would whine about their toes being stepped on or not - save the miners and do it quick!

Kudos to the long list of folks who made this happen.

And fivver -

That's flat out praise worthy work. To you and all your mates who choose that path. Tough way to make a buck, no question.
