WISHIMAY

I found out the other day that my 80+ year old grandma was STRIP SEARCHED coming back from a flight a couple years ago because there were RUMORS there were drug mules and they picked her out because she was the most UNlikely candidate.

I swear if I had been there, somebody would've left without eyeballs...

I was talking to hubby about taking a trip the other day and he said he doesn't want to take ANY planes because he's afraid he'll lose control and hurt someone if they tried to strip search him. Ain't about being naked and havin' rays... It's about the humiliation. Goverment sanctioned humiliation.

HK,

Thanks for reminding me why I don't fly. Also, I'm not too fond of cities. Out here, of course, they're trying to poison the land and the water, and I'm not talking chemtrails, they want us all under surveillance.

The sheeple, of course, will lie down and take it.

I think it's kinda refreshing just how MUCH support has been pouring in for this guy - especially given the verbal, emotional, if not possibly legal, or even physical (knowing what kinda jackbooted scum the TSA are) abuse he's gonna suffer for taking a stand.

Many of the more reasonable Libertarians have stood up, AND a damn lot of Liberal folk too, and now that there's enough press involvement to appease the ACLU's need for media-whoring and grandstanding, they might actually try to do something about this.

How To Opt Out of the TSA's Naked Body Scanners at the Airport
http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig11/adams-m9.1.1.html

TSA Resistance Movement Grows
http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/67499.html

I mean, we already knew about the groping thing, hell, it almost started a REALLY violent incident in a southern state when the bastards did it to a Lt's Wife awaiting the return of her husband from Iraq - that whole unit was about six seconds from delivering a beatdown, and of COURSE the perverted bastards covet their scanners, cause a statistically high percentage of folk in the surveillence biz are peepers anyhow, not to mention there's already been one internal incident of some TSA goon beating the crap out of another over being mocked by his co-workers for the size of his "equipment" while being scanned.

But most folk, as conditioned to right from the cradle by our so-called education(indoctrination) system just went on, sat down, shut up, and obeyed, to a degree that has always enraged me, especially when it encourages further abuses.

So yeah, I am very gratified that this guy, in a position of some moral authority* to do so, stood up, spoke out, and took a stand - he took a chance, kicked a pebble, and it set off an avalanche - let that be a LESSON to you folks, in how important even such petty defiances can be.

*Moral Authority: He's a fuckin PILOT for heavens sake, he's the one FLYING the plane, if we can't trust THIS guy, we're all fucked, aren't we ?
Seriously, what SENSE does it make to manhandle the pilots, when they've already had a background check bordering on the TSA crawling up their ass with a microscope, eh ?

I have tremendous respect for commercial airline pilots, especially since aviation safety is one of my hobby studies, and having heard many a CVR tape, these guys are natural heros who even when obviously doomed, never ever quit trying to save the plane and passengers, right up to the very end...

If we can't trust them, there ain't no point to having planes in the first damned place.

We need to back this guy all the way, or have no one to blame but ourselves.

My family wants to go to England to see my brother this Christmas. I'm not looking forward to it.

Maybe I'll use some tape and make aluminum underwear and a bra. I don't really want to go in a little room and do a pat down either. I'm paranoid, remember? I also have a serious case of Do Not Touch.

They got a picture of me already, it was a year ago, it was when they first installed them, hadn't heard anything about it, took me by surprise. Had to go on a business trip, so I couldn't back out, not without losing my job. They had a public service information about a trial run for the machine, and I didn't want to do it. But I couldn't figure out any way around it. I didn't know you could opt out then, because the information sign didn't include any information about an alternative option.

The old guy afterward was trying to act all nice because they could tell I was upset, but it just came across creepy.

It'll be worse when I have to go through the New York airport.

May I contribute
I'm not a rightist or a leftist, my opinion of all sides is pretty much nil. But I would have to say this. Pants bomber wouldn't have even got onto the plane, he would have been stopped by milimetric scanners, as would the 9/11 hijjackers, the list goes on.
Y'all are complaining about civil liberties violations and that this kind of thing means you're living in a police state
I have one thing to say to that.
"Tell the mothers and fathers of the dead kids about civil liberties."

I don't really care if I have to get strip searched, because at the end of the day, the alternative of planes falling out of the sky or a repeat performance of 9/11 is a lot worse.

Quite frankly, I've had it with this bullshit.
Put a fucking MRI machine at every airport to pass through.

We go from stupid sophomoric metal detectors (that DON'T work close to the ground) to gorram precision x-ray shit (that CAN'T be good for anyone's body).

Just fork over the bucks to get it done right, PLEASE!!!!

Personally, I don't CARE if they see my pee pee, or share the pix with peeps who care, I just want to be SAFE!!!! From nuts w/weapons AND nuts w/radiation.

Freedom isn't free. It also isn't free of risk.

Mandatory breathalyzer-interlock systems would stop drunk driving. Mandatory Bluetooth jammers would stop texting and phone calls while driving. These would save more lives every year than were lost on 9/11 or in every terror attack on America in it's history. Also, raising the driving age to 21 and demanding minimum 5 years training would all but eliminate traffic deaths.

Corporal Chaos, I'm calling you on your guilt argument and your false dilemma.

I am not retroactively responsible for the death of 3,000 people simply because I believe in civil liberties.

Also, you don't have to have draconian security measures to prevent another 9-11. You do have to have intelligence that 1) cares enough to prevent terrorism and 2) is not incompetent.

There's both such a thing as working smarter, not harder, and also such a thing as inappropriate response.

Well... the kind of security arrangements that work in Israel are generally the only ones that have been repeatedly proven to work against repeated suicide bombing attacks.

I would also note that it's impossible to prevent suicide bombings by intelligence alone because you get a massive amount of data from SIGINT alone and you have to determine what is valuable and what is noise, guess wrong and you're in deep trouble.

Also Milimetric scanners are not 'draconian', 'draconian' would be shooting everyone of middle eastern origin and/or muslim persuasion before they could get on a plane.

Also last time I checked, CIA and MI5/6 do want to prevent terrorism and the MI5 or MI6 are certainly competent, I cannot speak for the CIA

If security is overwhelmed by noise and data then I disagree that the solution to this problem is to introduce measures that INCREASE the amount of data to sort through, and therefore noise.

I have a logical argument against this assertion. CIA and MI5/6 get funding based on how much the population needs their protection. Fiscally they actually have little actual motive or incentive to do the job the public wants them to do. This might not translate over to emotional motives or incentives which (some?) might have, but it's a glaring systematic oversight IMO.

I wouldn't be so sure - didn't MI5/MI6 give the CIA the "intel" about Saddam allegedly trying to buy yellowcake uranium from Niger? That's certainly what Dubya claimed.

And Rappy comes un-fucking-glued if anyone tries to suggest that that claim was in any way untrue.

You're not overreacting, there is a threat and I never said there wasn't. BUT, if there are better ways to catch would be terrorists, that don't infringe on civil liberties or treat people on a basis of guilt before proven innocence, then those logically must be preferable to body scanners, as they require no contradiction of existing laws, i.e. 4th Amendment.

I think that 9-11 was the result of a failure of intelligence more than it was the result of lacking the technology or sufficient coverage.

Mikey, that didn't escape me, yeah, but here's the rub..

Commercial airline pilots in america put up with a damned lot of invasion into the personal lives in order to earn the trust of the company and the public, yes ?

Now, the reason for the screening, pat down, xray, or what have you, is to prevent folk from getting on board weapons and equipment with which they could conceivably take over or disable the plane.

Why, exactly, would THE FUCKING PILOT, who is, yanno, the guy flying the goddamn plane, NEED such a thing to take it over or auger it in ?

And honestly, shit, if he did there's a damn crash axe in the cockpit already, don't you know.

I mean, it's all just security theatre anyway, and all of us are well aware of that, a mere dog and pony show as a form of welfare for DHS, TSA and all the other government tit-suckers.

But it's absolutely LUDICROUS to pull the shakedown on the one guy who is ALREADY GONNA BE IN CONTROL OF THE PLANE.

Agreed, Frem. If the pilot is up to no good, his most effective weapon is between his ears, and no scanner is going to pick that up!

And for all the theatre, there's still the fact that on 9/11, the "weapons" used were simple boxcutters.

It is not ludicrous if the endgame is not safety/security, but control/power.

This surveillance stuff has never been about actual safety. Security has always been the tyrant's easiest pretext for shoving control down our throats. Look how many reasonable people on this list believe in the security it provides.

I wish more people would read Little Brother by Cory Doctorow, and the afterword written by a security analyst. The book is free at craphound.com .

Your security theatre isn't making one person in this country any safer.

But I'll give you one point - it ISN'T six feet long, as you seem to think.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I don't know how she manages that, Mike, or where she flies from/to or what, but it's damned hard to believe she gets away with it. I don't know of any halfway large airport that doesn't at least make you go through a metal detector and put your carry-on stuff in a bucket to go through the scanner. I had it happen to me coming from England, just BEFORE 9/11. My beloved Buck Knife got left behind because we were about to miss our plane and I was pissed...they would have either sent it to me or put it in cargo, I forget which it was so long ago, but they picked up on it immediately and wouldn't let me go through with it.

How does she get through with the increased security since 9/11?? Like I said, going to and from the Gulf, they made me take off my clunky Boot, shoes, and took away my mini-bottle of ice tea, so that sounds real strange to me. But then, what do I know?

Fuck if I know *HOW* she does it, but she does. Tosses the thing in her purse, forgets about it, goes through all the scanners/searches, and nobody's ever spotted it or mentioned it. It's happened so many times now that it's gotten to be a joke.

By the way, she just got back from Chicago a couple weeks ago, and so did the fish knife. Go figure.

I believe it, I've flown a couple times with nail kits and once a pen that has a knife concealed in it, mostly 'cause I've forgotten about it. Didn't realize 'till later.

They did TRY to take my kid's bottle away a few years ago, the freaks...

Don't know where your boss flies out of, but I've contributed two or three small (1.5" blade) pocket knives with plastic handles to TSA because I forgot they were in my briefcase. They haven't missed one yet. Maybe your local airports aren't as on the ball as National or Dulles.

HKCAVALIER

I find it very interesting that the folk who're saying "no big deal" have nothing to say about the specific issue: a pilot in good standing is refused entry to his place of work because he won't submit to this invasive nonsense. Y'know, you get a job at Walmart, you got to expect to be drug tested and treated like garbage, but this pilot was under the false impression that he was a trusted employee.

I also find it very interesting that the folks saying "go ahead and strip search me"--correct me if I'm wrong here--are all men. Certain men on the internet and elsewhere continually respond to women's (and other men's) complaints of being objectified or sexualized or otherwise demeaned in their bodies with the man crowing "I wounldn't mind a little objectification/sexualization/humiliation, etc. heh heh heh," as if the complaints (and by extension, the people making them) are just too pathetic to be taken seriously.

I'm reminded of Freud's old argument that a patient has to pay for therapy in order to value the process. Some folk around here seem to feel that security doesn't really count UNLESS it involves an abridgement of rights; and the more one's rights are abridged the better the security has got to be! The government is selling this "security" and these invasions are "what the market will bear." If this is truly the consensus among "most Americans" then our nation is well and truly fucked.

That's the rub, Geeze - She's flying in AND out of airports all over the country. Chicago (O'Hare), Dallas, Austin, Orlando (twice), San Diego, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Seattle...

You ever see those news stories where they use people to try to sneak bomb components through security to test the TSA people? Remember how often those tests fail to turn up the "bombs"? Yeah, it's just like that.

Her purse goes through the scanner, she goes through the detector, the whole bit. A utility knife - an ALL-METAL utility knife, at that - SHOULD be clearly visible, if anyone were paying any attention at all. A big part of why they don't notice, I'll wager, is that she's all of 5'2", 90 lbs, blonde hair and blue eyes, and quite attractive, as well as very personable and talkative - in other words, she doesn't match the "profile" of any kind of terrorist.

But you'd still think someone would notice. And they never have. It's gotten to the point that it really kind of freaks her out, because if SHE'S unthinkingly done this this many times now, what ELSE are they missing?

Well, yes and no.

No doubt for a LOT of people, this is a bit of schadenfreude - *I* have to go through this shit, so fuck you if *YOU* don't like going through it! You know what I mean?

But scanning the pilot isn't going to make one person one iota safer, so I'm with ya on that one.

However, have you ever worked a job where they DID change the terms of your employment? Like, say, they decided they DID want to do drug testing, where they never did before, and had no reason to suspect you of anything in the first place?

In the employment marketplace, we're all just commodities and resources. Wanna exercise some power to change that equation a bit? Better join a union!

He's full of shit. It was a made up story to make a stupid libtard point. I called him on it right away. It is nearly impossible to get through the metal detectors with a metal tubed lip stick, let alone a 6 inch BOX CUTTER.

Oh, you mean the corporate pacification arm of the empire which charges you money for the privledge of bowing and scraping and handing over your pensions, rights and dignity to the corporate empire while giggling up their sleeve about how clever they are to be to be more or less running their own so-called "opposition" via the Carnegie-Gompers model ?

Or do you mean a REAL union ?
