Time wants me to buy it in order to read the whole story, which I won't do, but this snippet made me giggle:
Quote:

It's not easy being a fake newsman in 2010: reality keeps stealing your best material. Take, for example, the argument that Campbell's new line of halal soups is a sign that Shari'a law is infiltrating the U.S. Funny, except that it's an actual argument, made by real-life political bloggers, including the group Tea Party Nation in early October. On the Oct. 11 Colbert Report, faux pundit Stephen Colbert ran with the idea of hostile Muslim food: "Is it any coincidence that bananas are crescent shaped?"

Absolutely amazing! Who says comedians can't have an impact? Go Jon and Stephen!

I found other snippets, too:
Quote:

Faux News

Out of late-night comedy, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have emerged as potent voices of social commentary in a media landscape where reasonable discourse is often overshadowed by partisanship and sound bites. In an effort to appeal to moderates, the two fake-news anchors will co-host rallies in Washington D.C. on October 30, 2010, with Stewart hosting the "Rally to Restore Sanity" and Colbert to host the "March to Keep Fear Alive," concurrently at the National Mall.

Quote:

Stewart vs. Crossfire

On October 2004, Stewart appeared as a guest on CNN's current events debate show Crossfire and voiced his concerns for the program. "It's not so much that it's bad, as it's hurting America...stop hurting America," Stewart said in reference to the "partisan hackery" that he criticized Crossfire for perpetuating. With Stewart commandeering the live broadcast with his increasingly critical comments, Tucker Carlson, the conservative host for the program, said, "I thought you were going to be funny, come on, be funny." "No, I'm not going to be your monkey," responded Stewart. In January of 2005, CNN cancelled Crossfire in part due to Stewart's on-air criticisms of the program.

Quote:

Colbert's Stand

Stephen Colbert is a former "correspondent" for Stewart's show who received his own spin-off series The Colbert Report in 2005. On it he plays a satire of the personality-driven pundits that saturate cable television. In 2006, he was invited to provide entertainment at the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, but the guests and the President received more than they expected. In character, Colbert roasted the press corps for being uncritical of the administration and the President for staging photo ops. While Colbert only received uneasy rounds of muffled laughter at the actual dinner, the video of his performance became a viral hit online.

Quote:

Mad Times

Jim Cramer, the host of CNBC's Mad Money financial television program, expected a light ribbing during his appearance on The Daily Show in March 2009. Instead, he walked into an assault about his and CNBC's roles in the walk-up to the 2008-09 financial meltdown.

Quote:

Colbert Goes to Iraq
In June 2009, Colbert did a we
ek's show in character for troops stationed in Iraq aiming to call attention to an overshadowed war. Colbert's over-the-top personality was matched by the venue — one of Saddam Hussein's garish former palaces. However, despite Colbert's penchant for theatrics, no one ever expected him to have his iconic haircut shaved off by General Ray Odierno in an act of solidarity for the troops.

Quote:

The Stewart Factor

Jon Stewart has maintained, for years, a friendly rivalry with Bill O'Reilly, the host of Fox's The O'Reilly Factor, with Stewart repeatedly accusing Fox News of spinning a proconservative, anti-Obama narrative. The two hosts have appeared as guests on each other's respective shows on several occasions.

Easy Nik, Stewarts show has about 2 million veiwers, Colberts around 1.5 million. You're giving them more credit then they deserve. That stunt they're going to do in D.C. isn't going to get anywhere near the numbers Becks rally had.

Stewart tries, I'll give him that. I disagree with him on Iran, and on Islam in general, and I disagree on the tea party, though I get that he's trying to understand. He's a pretty clever guy, and he's probably reasonably fair and balanced.

Colbert is a very talented man who never had a political idea in his life, as he said himself. His politics comes across as sheer idiocy, but when he tries, he can be very funny.

Niki, I was just sharing this viewpoint so you can see how they look from the other side. Stewart's opinions I give serious consideration, and Colbert has something over Michael Moore and Bill Maher et al: At least he's actually funny. You can be a communist and catch my interest if you're funny enough.

New York Gov. election:

Speaking of which, I'm wavering on my support for Hawkins. I might vote for Black Panther Charles Barron. He's a level headed guy, and if this were a serious election, I'd actually want him to win.

I'm in a conundrum because I want to make an environmentalist protest vote, and that Green vote would probably make a larger notch.

Still the undecided voter.

Because Jimmy McMillan is not just a lunatic, he's a fraud. He pays no rent. He has a special relationship with the major property owners which gets him a free flat.

See, the trick is, the way this goes does is not that we end up with rent control, but with some sort of rent subsidy, a new kind of welfare that some people already get. Jimmy's backers, landlords, would like to see that program greatly expanded. They see what the handout formula Keynesian stimulus model has does for the medical system and education, and so real estate wants in.

Everyone knows he'll never win, but the longer he raises the issue, the more likely it is that some major party candidate will float such a proposal.

ETA: Jimmy also said "Frack the western part of the state. Some people have to sacrifice so others can thrive" Nice attitude. You're going to permanently poison our water supply and destroy our ecosystem so that the city can have lower energy bills?

I'll add What Charles Barron said about his "I hope everyone was listening, because two candidates here just announced they were running for dictator. Three if you count Jimmy."

Mike,

no argument here, except you really should have that one-eyed vision looked at. It was democrats who created and passed the radical mining legislation in west virginia, and it's democrats who are about to do it in New York.

When are you going to wake up and see that it is one two headed monster that's half red and half blue, and exists just to divide us and keep us fighting amongst ourselves?

No one with any kind of influence in the democratic party represents any kind of resistance to corporate rule any more than any republican. Democrats who do oppose it, like Dennis are just deluded into thinking that the democrats are the party of peace just like people like Ron Paul are deluded into thinking that the republicans are the party of limited govt.

And yet, you like Ron Paul, right?

So you admit you suffer from the same one-eyed vision, I take it. You've stated that you were THINKING about voting for the socialist, but you really can't, because he's a socialist - what you never considered was whether that was actually better or worse than the other choices you've been given.

And I'm sorry to say, in many of these races, it really IS going to come down to the last few votes. Lots of them are trending that close. So throwing a vote away on a "protest" can be a harmful thing, as it was in 2000, because people "protesting" Gore's nomination voted Nader, and thereby handed (along with the SCOTUS's "sElection" of him) Bush the presidency. Sure, if you've got a race like your gubernatorial race, throw your vote away to "send a message" to Cuomo. But if, as you claim, he isn't listening, what's your message? "I don't like you, but you don't care about me, so let's never do anything for each other!"

That sounds worthwhile... [shrugs]

Yes, the lesser of two evils is still evil. But it's also LESS evil.

On a lighter note, would you be offended if I told you not to go into tachycardia over this election? ;)

I don't think either Stewart or Colbert are people I take seriously...they're satirists, remember? I recognize Colbert is nothing but a satirist of the right, and he's only half funny to me (would be more if he'd get rid of his stupid "reporters"). Stewart I have respect for; I think he's bright, has good writers, and often says it like it is, via satire, which few dare to do.

I don't care if they have less viewers. Fox gets regular high ratings, but only because it's sad audience doesn't watch ANYTHING else...so ratings/audience is something to judge by? Not in my book.

You see, you divide Fox by one...their audience, who watch nothing else and swallow their pablum whole. You divide CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC and all the others by how many real people are out there who want multiple opinions and think for themselves, and the ratings clobber Fox. So their crowing about their ratings is bullshit, pure and simple.

Same with Stewart and Colbert; if more thinking people watched them, that would be great, but I'm quite happy with their audience, thank you. We'll always be in the minority, I like the company.

Stewart dares to confront people who don't have the guts to go anywhere but Fox, I'm guessing partly because he treats them with dignity and humor. I think that's cool. Colbert brings on people with issues which educate us and he supports good stuff. That's as close to politics as he gets, but it's worthwhile and I respect him for it.

Mike,

This election is not even close. Even if Cuomo's family didn't have control over the voting machines, Cuomo is currently at 66% to Paladino's 22%. If Lazio makes it onto the ballot, which it now looks like he will, that reduces Paladino to 11%. Paladino is a joke, this is not an election about to be decided by a split vote. All the splitters allowed, just about, are on the right. There's even a move to remove Barron from the Ballot.

Ron Paul is pretty politically neutral, like Russ Feingold. That's not a partisan position.

Howie Hawkins might still get my vote, but his concept of govt. would make me worry if I thought that he was actually going to have a chance. He still doesn't scare me nearly as much as Cuomo.

Cuomo is not the lesser of two evils: He is more competent, and so even if he is not as evil as Paladino, he's capable of more evil.

Well, yeah - I think I said I could understand you casting a "protest" vote in such a circumstance. Many others in the country aren't quite as lucky as you, if "lucky" is the right word in such a case...

Odd that the right has such a hard-on for Feingold, then. He's one of the very few who opposed the Iraq War AND opposed the Patriot Act AND its renewal. Seems the tea-baggers would love him, since he's consistently come down on the side of civil liberties and personal freedom - but since he's listed as a Democrat, they're pouring money into the race to defeat him.

That's what rankles about the tea parties: they'll vote against their own interests if you put a (D) next to any issue or person.

If I didn't know better, I'd think you were advocating incompetence and ignorance as positive traits to look for in a candidate. How'd that work out with for ya with Dubya?

Cuomo is really evil, and has it locked up. Paladino would face a pretty hostile govt, but I agree that it wouldn't be good if he actually won, but there's like zero chance of that.

Feingold is almost a perfect libertarian conservative. I think that people on the right who like him are using their brains.

You make a good point about Tea Party Funding. I would like to separate this out as an institution. I think it's all coming from a handful of loyal GOP sources, mostly Rupert Murdoch. He opposes any left party candidate winning any office on the planet. He doesn't seem to care what they believe.

Think about Cameron for a second. What logical person would pour his support behind Bush, and then Cameron? Tony Blair basically *was* George W. Bush, but Murdoch fought to defeat him, while fighting to elect Bush. That's because Blair had an (L) next to his name, which is very much like a (D).

It's occurred to me that maybe Murdoch is paranoid that there's a left wing conspiracy trying to conquer the planet so he'll try to defeat as many as possible.

BTW, in the world of "Sane Conservatives" I see Lincoln Chafee is running for Gov. of RI. And Obama is pointedly *not* backing the democrat. (I could grow to like this Obama guy... if only he could lose his cronies.)

Notice the neocons want Feingold gone, and the Dems aren't helping. Remember who else was in that team to defeat the Patriot Act Renewal: Specter, Sununu and Larry Craig. Conveniently, they were all kicked to the curb post haste.

Speaking of which, in what way is the Patriot Act or the Dept of Homeland Security "Limited Govt."?

Seriously, a paramilitary bureaucracy with a million employees sounds like something out of Communist China.

Oh, and they have now surpassed the police, crackheads, gangs for "the people who have threatened me with guns the most number of times." They're still behind the Nazis on that score.

I could grow to like him if only he could act like a progressive. My biggest gripe with Obama as President is that he gets painted as a "hard left" progressive... and then STARTS his bargaining from a position of center-right. Seriously, he killed the public option BEFORE the first serious policy meeting on healthcare reform, and then acted surprised that people weren't happy with the watered-down milquetoast crap he ended up with as a "victory".

He honestly, naively thinks that if he starts close to what Republicans want, they'll go for his ideas. They don't want to just get what they want; they want THE FIGHT. They HAVE TO oppose him, no matter what he proposes. He proposed a plan that was to the right of Reagan's, to the right of Dole's, and the right spit in his face for it.

He still hasn't learned that the opposition is the opposition, no matter what. He should have seen it over unemployment extensions or small business stimulus funding - He took ideas that the GOP had proposed, said "These are good; we can do this", only to have the GOP say, "These are terrible ideas! You're a socialist!"

They don't oppose the ideas; they oppose the man, and his party. Period. No matter what.

So, given that that's political landscape, why start at the middle if you're still going to have to fight and compromise? Start from further to the left than FDR would have dreamed of going, and bargain to the right, where you end up with a new New Deal.

And when that doesn't work, call them on it and fucking steamroller their asses. After all, they're the ones calling for a violent overthrow of the government; I think "playing nice" is pretty much off the table.

And yeah, "Take your endorsement and really shove it" isn't a great way to play the game and get an endorsement. I think Caprio now has an answer as to who Obama's going to endorse. You're welcome, Governor Chafee. :)

DREAMTROVE

My biggest gripe with Obama has to be the war but here's a list:

The War

Civil liberties (patriot act, extraordinary rendition, official secrets, etc. It's Bush++)

Obamacare (It's a tax on the citizenry by corporations. It lowers govt. asst. to the poor, and taxes only those who can't afford healthcare, ie., the poor, with a direct tax we can't afford.)

Bailouts (He's anti-robinhood. Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore...)

The Debt (these policies have caused the official debt to skyrocket, and the unofficial debt to go nova. High debt doesn't just mean depression, it means america's now everyone else's bitch. Not only the fed writing policy, but international predators like BP are coming to kill america.)

The environment. (from oil spill to MTR to fracking, Obama and co have failed to stand up for the earth, or even the part of it called the USA.)

His cabinet. (For the most part, this is a worse selection of nominees than I would have thought possible. Geitner, Salazar, Clinton, Gates all have to go, and I'm sure I'm missing someone. At least he got rid of Summers and Rahm.)

The lies. (Obama twice during the campaign admitted to lying outright, which I'll give him credit for be straight about political doublespeak, but he made bold statements about intentions and promises which he then did a complete 180 on, important things... it's almost as if he's a politician!)

The failures (There are some things that Obama might have meant when he said he'd support them: Trains, Alt. Energy, Stem Cells. Things I think of as smart business that Mike probably thinks of as progressive. Obama's support for this stuff has been nominal, and he's even passed legislation coming out of the US Cretinous that opposes all of these.)

But I disagree with what went wrong.

Centerboard is the most powerful position. The problem is, the only center that Obama is in, policy-wise, is in between neolibs and neocons. This is not entirely his fault. He has three serious liabilities for a diplomat:

Harry Reid
Nancy Pelosi
Howard Dean

All three have based all of their political rhetoric on the idea that what went wrong in the Bush years is that republicans are evil. Then they all supported the idea that rather than negotiate in congress, they would railroad a supermajority.

Of course, this was a Bush legacy that Obama inherited, or rather, a Harry Reid legacy. The democrats in congress started acting as if the opposition was evil as soon as they got into power, while simultaneously and quite pointedly NOT opposing any of the policies of the GOP which might be called, objectively, you know, EVIL. Like the war, and torture, and unlawful detainment, and handing taxpayer dollars and control of the country to the FED and foreign banks and some just all around bad guys.

The fact is that sure, the republicans under Bush behaved similarly, largely because Tom Delay had a gun and was threatening people (Chafee and Voinovich said as much) A trick that Rahm also used. *(odd, men who dance with guns... what are they, a gay Mr. and Mr. Smith?)

Mike,

What you're missing here is that what the democrats want isn't what you want, what they've been telling us for years that they want (better schools safer streets, more access to medical care...) This is left wing fodder just like the GOP says its going to help small business, or business at all (other than oil cronies) or that it will give us limited govt. and a free market.

This is the sales pitch. What both parties really want is power.

Mike,

I see that you are correct on Chafee's opponent. lol. That's pretty sad. I'm afraid the dems have some candidates of the caliber of the tea party this time.

Of course Obama won't really endorse Chafee, that would be treasonous to the party, but he might in private.

Chafee is not running as a Republican I see, but as an independent. I guess he got sick of being lobbied by people with concealed weapons.

But I think what you're missing is that that's what the Tea Party people want, too.

If someone tells you they're spending $140 million of their own money to get a term-limited, $150k/yr gubmint job "because they want to give back", or "for the good of the people", have them checked into a mental health facility post-haste.

It's always about the power. Anyone who admits it is a sociopath, but an honest one; anyone who denies it is still a sociopath, and a liar to boot. ;)

By the way, some rightie posted a boast that the rally wouldn't come near Beck's numbers. Who exactly said it had to? The fact that there are more crazies in the country right now who have nothing better to do than go to rallies and pray to the Great Gawd Beck, as opposed to going to a rally just for the fun of it is no surprise whatsoever. Means nothing. For ANY to show up is good enough for me, the more the merrier.

Mike,

the tea party can't want anything as it's not a coherent entity yet...

As for the RI race. it gets worse.

The Caprio guy was apparently involved in two scandals. One is called pay for play, where he doled out bucks as treasurer to his own law firm, and to people who would contribute to his own campaign.

The other is that he has serious subprime debacle ties:
1. He multiplied housing construction subsidies by 10.
2. He created a real estate tax break where there is now no tax on real estate profits in RI
3. He took the RI treasury and put it into high risk class "D" CDO mortgage derivatives.

Ouch.

But it's going to be a dumb election: There are two republicans and a democrat, so even if the dem has 34%, he can still win, as long as the voting machine splits it right.

He's of course a DINO. He was campaigning for the GOP nomination simultaneously as he was for Dem's. He's also a Clintonista.

I'll be thinking of you Cuda! I was thinking in terms of something like:

"TRY SANITY!
It's not illegal...
yet"

but I'm still thinking.

As an aside; they've put up a meeting board for people to sign up and post. Reading the posts this morning, I saw several talking about meeting at EZ5 (a local cafe) to have coffee and watch it on a big-screen TV. Made me shake my head, and I commented that it wasn't worth driving in from Marin for me to sit in a coffee shop and watch it, I could do that from the comfort of my own home...that the idea was to RALLY, rain or shine (or fog)--it's forecast to rain.

Immediately saw a bunch of responses to the same effect, saying they'd be there, umbrella and all. Then I noticed on the second post about EZ5 there was a website--went there and damned if it's not an AD to watch the rally there! So I posted again and said so, and said hell, if I could march against Vietnam, Iraq and for civil rights, I could stand in the cold for sanity--huddled in some cafe having a little tea party was what the "elites" they claim we are would do!

Hee, hee, hee, the posts are coming thick and fast, agreeing with me and putting down EZ5 for advertising to make a profit off the rally. I don't begrudge them that, but I don't think they should be advertising on the meet-up's website, dammit. Only woosey yuppies would go there!

Mike

Taking things out of context is the media's job.

Consider this

1. It's clearly form a RTL rally.

2. It only looks crazy because it's in a line with the others. The guy on the right is actually pretty on target, parse the bit about sodomy. Also, he's being very non-partisan about it.

This is like putting Howie Hawkins, Warren Redlich and Charles Barron in between Jimmy McMillan and Kristin Davis, to say nothing of Paladino ;)

Or, gak, Cuomo

Anyway, protestors carrying signs are insane. Here's the first ones that came up for me on a random google search, unrelated:

http://pajamasmedia.com/files/2008/04/img_2013.JPG

They also returned this. I'm not sure if it's a protest or a fashion statement

Or just random lunacy.

ETA: The one that doesn't come up you can click on, it's anti-chinese americans from some left wing protest. Every protest has tag alongs that it probably doesn't want. I remember as a student, we'd always get two groups of loons at least: The Larouchies, and the anti-nuclear power nuts, who were really thinly disguised oil company representatives.

I'd like some facts on that first wone being part of "some left-wing protest", please...all your links bring up are the photos themselves.

The second one, too; I seem to recall seeing something like that which was a SATIRE of stupid protest signs at a Tea Party rally. I certainly could be wrong.

Of COURSE there are stupid signs at any protest rally, but to say "protestors carrying signs are insane" in general shows your bias and disqualifies you from reasoned debate on the subject.

As to "The guy on the right is actually pretty on target". that also disqualifies you in my book; you're claiming Obama supports abortion, socialism and the New World Order??? That's an opinion in the first place, and a crazy one in MY opinion. And being nonpartisan has nothing to do with being sane!
