We've been beefing up security to

protect us against terrorists
stop the flow of illegal immigrants
block the importation of illegal drugs

Noticing a theme here? (I wasn't)

They're taking our jobs (oh no!)
And moving them overseas (oh no!)
We'll need to create more jobs here (huh?)

So...

How long before we will be unable to leave?
At least without them knowing exactly where we're going, and maybe following us, particularly if we're on some sort of list?

Okay, so a little bid of that Mad Tea Party creeping in... But, you know, they kind of have a point. Except for the moron faction who is all for border security. Those morons are on all sides of the fence.

Mike just made think of something that I know is going to make Frem say "Finally, you catch on, you know you're a little slow some times..."

Also, I get this goes in the "We're turning into the Soviet Union!" category, where the media reacts with "That's hysteria..."

Is it?

They're tracking our every movement (GPS, RFID)
Taxing us on everything we do (or letting corporations do it)
They want to put us to work for them (new new deal?)
Where we can live, public housing (makes sense, jack up the housing prices, and then provide us a solution, with permits)

Throw in backscatter scanners in vans:

As someone already said, "Big Brother isn't just watching you. He's looking underneath your clothes, into your house, into your bank account, into your car...."

I don't know why the country is going in this direction, and why its citizens are allowing it.

I have very little doubt that the USA will be requiring exit visas within 10 years--and you can be sure that you will not be able to leave with all the cash you own.

The US has subtle ways of doing things. If we're the new USSR, it will all be disguised.

A friend of my sisters was just denied a passport. The reason? Her husband was not yet a full citizen, he is a legal resident on a "path to citizenship"*

However, she is a natural born american citizen, and yet she is not permitted a passport.

* "path to citizenship" is an admission that we are creating a new underclass of americans who do not have full rights. Apparently, these rights-loses also extend to their spouses.

Here are some others: Govt. run slave labor, aka "Full employment." Anyone who thinks job creation and employment are signs of increased freedom hasn't spent enough time thinking about it. Jobs are the work for debt, which is the new slavery.

The way this will go is that the govt. will create a "jobs program" to help you "escape debt." Not only will this help you pay off your debt, you will even be able to get "debt forgiveness" to some limited degree. This debt, in turn, will come from your college education and your healthcare mandatory insurance, which will be paid for by govt. loan programs. This means the govt., either directly or through a corporation licensed by the govt for this purpose, will be make a claim of "ownership" of you, which is how these contracts are worded, meaning that they own the wages of your work (just what the initial slave contracts said.)

Now the prices will be outrageous. In Stewart's recent interview with Obama, the exchange went something like this

Stewart: But under your program, insurance companies can raise rates whenever they feel like it, and we'll have to pay.

Obama: No, we put limits on that.

Stewart: Yes, but the limit you put on it was 30% a year, that's insane.

Obama: (changes the subject.)

So, premiums to start in the c. $4,000/person range can go up 30%/year? That's doubling every 2.5 years. In 25 years, that's $4,000,000. Of course, a dollar won't be worth as much then, but it is clearly carte blanche to make that debt infinite if they feel the need be.

Then, there's education. $250,000, now, on average. I'm all for school choice, but now I can see that when it comes, it will come so that *children* will graduate from *highschool* with this kind of debt.

The debt forces you to work, but there are no jobs. That's when the new "Govt. Jobs Program" comes in: The new new deal. Of course, these aren't jobs doing what you want to do, these are jobs to help the war effort (90% of all employment under the new deal were for the war effort.)

So, we are to be slaves to the military industrial complex, but we're not prisoners, right?

Well, the rising cost of housing, which is continuously being rigged, can make a home cost $250,000, or $500,000 in the city, all from govt. sponsored corporate loans. The expensive city housing is likely to be where you'll have to live to get the new govt. jobs. To buy these houses, you will have to take on the mortgage... If you qualify.

But if you don't, and you won't, then you can live in the new govt. housing complexes, which will be surrounded by, and filled with, security cams and guards, and you will have to have your paperwork (residency permit the commies called it) to live there.

Ah, socialism, isn't it wonderful? They're providing jobs and housing and medical care for everyone!

Hey, wasn't that exactly what slave owners were legally required to do for slaves?

Oh, but the slaves didn't get any money.

But wait, you won't be getting any money either. You'll be in debt.

Hard to buy your way out of this contract.

The new slavery exists no matter the source of the debt.

Take college loans, as you pointed out. The loans don't just come from govt sources. There are plenty of private educational loans as well. Take private mortgages. Credit cards with usury rates. Any kind of loan, private or public, can be leveraged to keep someone indentured forever.

What keeps us in slavery (modern employment) is the corporatocracy we know today as democratic government. We have laws that shield big business from liability (e.g. pharm companies), keep down the competitors of big business (e.g. patent and "environmental" safety laws that only big businesses can afford), and create an obstacle course for Mom-and-Pop businesses (e.g. zoning laws, health inspections, licenses...). This is not to mention the sheer power of tons of money that can put small business owners out without any govt force at all.

I'm not saying all the above laws are bad. I am saying they protect one thing at the cost of another. Just like those scanners provide some security at the cost of our privacy and civil rights, zoning laws provide esthetic peace of mind for suburbia at the cost of hampering self-employment. We as a society have already decided we would rather be slaves to large corporations than have to take more responsibility for our own comfort and safety.

In other words, we collectively would rather live on the Core Planets as Alliance slaves than on the Outer Moons as Reaver-escaping free persons.

I'm a libertarian. I have no fondness of govt. But I would be blind to single out ONLY the govt as the root of all our problems.

Y'know, DT, I thought this was a given.

That's why I keep saying it: The same walls that keep "them" OUT, also keep "US" *IN*.

That old saw about "America: Love It or Leave It!" no longer applies. Now it's "Not So Fast! Where Do You Think YOU'RE Going?!"

The modern definition of "socialist" is anyone who's winning an argument against a tea-bagger.

I was on a rant against govt. Catch me on a dif. day and I'll rant against corporations. What we need is the anti-trust, to kill all monopolies. The main problem with govt. is that it's a monopoly. That's the main problem with corporations that are as well.

As for accountability issues, we the people should be organized to act against all abusers.

Indeed. We won't be sent to the gulags. We'll be sold to the corporations. And the hilarious part? We'll PAY THEM to let us wear their logos! And we'll be proud that we're working longer and longer hours for less and less money.

We'll be gleeful supplicants to the moneyed interests, we'll do it voluntarily, and we'll be cheering "We're Number ONE!" the whole time.

In fact, we already are.

Err. My ancestors were probably the ones owning that debt, sorry about that. Except for the Irish ones, they were penniless refugees. My grandfather's side. He made me promise "Never take a debt, never sign a contract." I was like 6 or 7 at the time. It was good advice. We grew up very poor, it made it a very long fight, but we're all doing okay, financially, and none of us have debts or contracts. My sister actually is going in to the hospital tomorrow hopefully to have a possible brain tumor removed *ouch* so, wish her luck. Just thought of that re: doing okay.

Ouch, DT. I hope your sister does ok. I will pray for her, unless you object. (Yes, I pray.)

I haven't always done well regarding debt, but nowadays, we live by a no-debt policy. Up until 2 months ago, we had no debt whatsoever. House, cars, everything, paid with cash. No, they weren't pretty, but they worked most of the time.

Two months ago, we took out a small loan to snatch up this small cut-out of our property when it became for sale. We had to do it, and we should have it paid off in a few more months. When you're used to being debt-free, even a small debt feels like a monkey on your back.
