Flying like the Nuttiest of Squirrels...Yes , it's beautiful , but I've got a notion that even a 'close scrape' would not be pretty...

Especially enjoyed the sequences where flydude buzzes the hairpin turn...Unbelievable !

I wonder if there's a large body of water, like a lake or ocean, which they could fly across, put on the 'air brakes' and simply drop into the drink.

That is tricky , too.

They deploy the parachute from the little pack on their backs.

You can see a red chute bloom from one of the packs if you watch again.

The risks are still quite extreme. There is no reserve chute , the deployments are at low altitudes , and then there's the matter of exactly where to set down , in terrain that is often quite rough.

Only real issues I'd see with the idea of dropping into the water would be (1) flaring at just the right time (might be kinda hard to judge exactly WHEN to pull up, since you really ARE dropping, even if it doesn't much look like it), and (2) making damn sure you can get out of the wingsuit before you get tangled up in it in the water.

I really would like to see someone give it a go, though - with lots of safety staff around, of course.

Might be more of a smash...Water is a lot harder than it looks , especially at speed.

I get sick when the jet comes in to land. I wonder how they keep their stomachs ... phenergan?

Done trampoline work - it's hard to keep your orientation and do an exact 360 flip - do they have diving/ gymnastics training?

They all look pretty light - I think for the surface area to weight ratio you'd have to meet some pretty strict weight limits.

Yeah, it's all pretty when everything works out - know someone who invited me to skydive which I turned down - they broke their spine first jump out with hard landing. Glad I didn't go.

And that , the 'wing loading' is only one of many considerations.

One thing that many folk forget is that the lift is achieved at glide velocities up to 120 mph.

Max L/D (lift to drag ratio) for these flyers so far is only about 3/1.

To flare a wingsuit over water would be extremely problematic. Landing it would be even more so. Water at high velocity is actually quite abrasive.

Landing any flying device that depends upon forward velocity to maintain lift means flying a precise formation with the surface. Add to this the fact that landing on water creates well-known optical illusions , especially when above 'glassy' water...

Then there's the 'ground effect' , a cushion of air between the flight article and the surface.

A wingsuit has no devices on it for increasing drag while increasing lift , as with the flaps on the wing of an airplane.

The problem is , " How does one slow down to a survivable velocity with a wingsuit , to effect a 'landing' ? "

Even if the speed were reduced by some form of flap , or possibly a drag chute , hitting the water at even 30-40 mph is known to be quite painful , and would likely often also be fatal.

Unconsciousness , broken neck , drowning , or some combination of the three are big potential hazards.

Sooner or later , someone may try it , but they'll also be likely to die in the attempt.

Well, that's why I had the idea of 'air brakes', so to say. If you could fly out over the water, spreading out as wide as possible to get the most resistance, and then maybe do some sort of maneuver where you tuck into a gainer, and then quickly spread out again....

Hey, if these nuts can think of skimming across the edge of a mountain in a controlled fall, why not ?

There are 3 large groups of considerations :

1. The knowns.

2. The unknowns.

and the last group , the one that kills folk rather reliably ,

3. The 'unknown' unknowns...

Your approach requires a lot of group 3.

It's full of unknown unknowns , like making up your deceleration maneuver on your first try and then hoping that it works out all right.

Increasing your drag will decrease your speed , which is desirable , but it will also decrease your lift in many cases , which is not so desirable , because then you have run out of flying speed , altitude , and ideas , all at once.
