Serious question.

If not, then why fight so much?

The best we can do is state our beliefs and let others determine if they are worth it for themseselves.

Liberal, Conservative, Tea Party, Independent, Socialist, Anarchist... whatever....

You can state your belief, and someone will not like it, hate it, snark it...

So why fight with them?

Why argue so hard?

The only way to win is to not play.. (yes, I ripped that from an old 80s movie)

For you, of all people, to post that is absolutely hysterical. You're not as bad as a couple of others, but you almost NEVER express anything as "it's my belief...", you express things as "That's fact. It cannot be refuted", despite the fact that it IS only your opinion.

You are also one of the few who make what you disagree with very personal and make derrogatory statements to/about those you disagree with and/or all liberals. Without respect, there is no communication; you're one of those who seems incapable of respecting someone with a differing point of view.

What you never seem to catch onto is that debate can be illuminating, interesting and fun, and don't have to be black and white, and you don't have to denegrate and put down those with opposing views to yours. It doesn't HAVE to be a fight, it can be a reasoned debate, but you and Kane and Raptor and others TURN it into a battle almost immediately.

I've had my mind changed on several issues by reasoned points made by others, and have conceded it at the time. No, we'll never change one another's political or religious ideologies, tho' after learning more, I've begun to feel I've got some libertarian in me as well as liberal philosophy. But exchange of ideas can be wonderful, we have people from walks of life who can expand our understanding of things, and more.

It's only a "fight" because you and a few others make it so. If you ever stopped that, reasoned debate here could be wonderfully interesting. We try to have it AROUND you, which is difficult because it's hard not to be triggered by devisive attacks, but it isn't always a "fight" between most of us, in my view.

Yes.

At the very least I can get people to think it over.
An unquestioned value is one that serves no useful purpose, and if someone goes "Hmm, gotta think about that" and then actively chooses that value that's one thing, as opposed to simply accepting at face value something handed off to them in their upbringing they never thought to question.

You ain't gonna GET "hoorah, I've seen the light" out of folk via an internet discussion, people just don't work that way - but "I think you might have a point there..." is wholly sufficient for the purpose.

There's plenty of folk on this forum who have taken a slightly different tack of lookin at things from discussions here, it's just not apparent to folk who think their way is the only right way and anyone who doesn't hold those exact beliefs to those exact degrees are deviants who should be burned at the stake - which means your punk bitch ass is never gonna notice, Wulfenwhiner.

The key point is offering a reasonable, sane, factually supported argument in a form clearly understandable in detail to both parties of the discussion, something which also ain't never gonna happen in your case...

For a fact, while at times impolite or even brutal, and despite our often profound differences, Rue, Siggy and myself *have* learned quite a bit from one another, and so too with some of the more rational conservative types who you jackbooted wingnuts have caused to run for the hills for fear of being associated with you and your ilk.
(Sarge, Jack, et. al.)

Ain't about changing minds, as it's about making your point in a sensible fashion (provided your point MAKES some kinda sense, which leaves you out) to other folk and trying to find somewhere in between or compatible to which both parties can work without conflict - making allies instead of enemies... rather than trumpeting your "only-right-way" and trying to stomp down anyone who disagrees with it, which is not only fucking pointless, but every time a discussion does start coming to that common ground, some shitheel like you barges in with that bullshit and by refusing to call your dumb ass on it, it implies tacit support of that conduct by one "side" or the other, at which point any consensus or agreement blows to powder in the wind.

Hell, to put not too fine a point on it, boy - you're your own "side"s worst enemy at all times, no matter which one it is, and that is the greatest part of why I do *not* want you on mine.

Don't like it, you can haul your sorry ass back to Stormfront where you came from, punk.

DREAMTROVE

Oh, now play nice.

Quick before he posts a video

Aw. Too late.

At least it's war games.

Ally sheedy is hot.

I mean seriously. This fucked with my primal selection system big time. So, when I saw Breakfast Club, I'm all like, okay, so Molly Ringwald is pretty, but putting Ally Sheedy in a down jacket is a crime. Okay, so I hadn't seen Spacehunter, but then again, who had?

Seriously you're right about the conclusion:

I'm just assuming that's which scene it is, I didn't actually watch the video. See a picture is worth a thousand words, or 4 minutes of video.

Unless it's the scene where Ally Sheedy is going on about how hot Dr. Falken is. Which would have been so much more awesome to post.

I don't know, that scene gets me. It's part of what makes her so much more like real girls.

41, that's old. Lol. How ironic.

Hollywood girls are always some inaccessible dream girl that you never really knew because she never really existed. Ally Sheedy was like girls you knew.

For the one guy out there who didn't see the movie and is wondering WTF?

Wulf, your pretense of being civil and putting this thread out as a gesture of “peace” is disingenuous in the extreme. You didn’t snark at us? You put something up; we answered your question...at no time did you even ADDRESS us, to snark or otherwise. But gesture of peace??? These are some of the most recent things you’ve said of and to others—there are worse, but I don’t need or want to take the time to look for more:
Quote:

Must be because they're so much smarter than you.

This is what has become of the DemoLibProgs... snark.
They've got nothing left.
Paper crowns and sucking their thumbs in a corner.

We may have shot the DemolibNationalSocialists in the leg... but they are far from done. Yeah, a head shot would have been better (only way to kill a zombie) but we deal with what we have.

Your posts Nix are really why most people view Progressives, liberals and democrats as children

Story, its ok. Go sulk in the corner, suck your thumb...Maybe we'll bring you milk and cookies later. Really, its ok, little one.

You don’t even “argue”, you just toss out idiotic attacks with nothing of substance Statements such as the following, which you make consistently, are enough to make people not take you seriously. You are the furthest thing from an independent I’ve ever SEEN, and constantly take credit for things you had nothing to do with:
Quote:

We Independents have DONE THE IMPOSSIBLE. And, you know what that makes us?

How the Tea Party and all the rest of us Independants view Republicans (and those in power).

How it felt to watch the country turn Republican (and against the National Socialists, Liberals, Progressives, Communists, slaves) AND to win only with the help of the Tea Party and Independants...

The idiocy of saying the Republicans gained control of just the house “only” because of Tea Party and Independents is stupid—only a small proportion of right-wing candidates or voters were Tea Party OR independent, and if it weren’t for the Tea Party, the Republicans would have taken the Senate AND Nevada! Those you are citing have nothing to do with the situation—National Socialists?? Communists?? And I take it you’re saying all of those in parentheses are slaves? It’s ridiculous...there’s not only no chance of impacting anyone’s opinion, but you state idiocy as if it was fact. Of course we ridicule you.,

Would you like to see an example of a well-reasoned, civil post (just in case you ever want to try)? Check out this one, from Kiki:
Quote:

Many people try to read the lessons of history to foretell the future. I agree that there seems to be a trend to greater equality over time - but I don't know the mechanism that makes that happen. And until I know the mechanism, I'm not confident it'll work in the future like it did in the past, b/c I'm not confident that the factors that worked then will be present later.

Still, some things are clear to me. An unsustainable system will collapse. It's certain, like entropy, or gravity, or an increase in heat due to an increase in CO2. It could collapse faster if the imbalance is great, or slower if it is small, but unless something happens to reverse the imbalance, it will go.

And we are unsustainable, both ecologically and economically.

Many, many unsustainable systems have come - and gone. Look at our world if you want to see this is true. We are not Romans, or Greeks, or Aztecs. Their systems flourished, then disappeared. It happened then, it will happen to us. We aren't exempt.

Now compare that with your offerings, and tell me why we shouldn’t snark at you, please.

Fremdfirma has changed my mind of a few issues, and he's changed my THINKING on a whole slew of things.

DT has made me think, more than a few times.

AnthonyT was always good for a reasoned debate, and had some very insightful posts. But the funniest thing he ever posted was when he lost it on someone and responded "Fuck you in the neck." It was so deadpan, and so out of character for Anthony that I almost fell out of my chair when I read it. And it remains awesome because it was a one-time occurrence.

Anyhow, several posters here have gotten me to rethink and re-examine issues and my stances on them. None of them have done it by simply posting up their favorite movie clip, but by having reasoned, well thought-out conversations.

Is that why you have to work in such constructive words and phrases as "retard", "dummy", "asshole", "immature", "liar", "punk", "coward", and such into every conversation that doesn't go your way? Seriously. You last two, maybe three responses into a "debate" before you start calling names, insisting that anyone who dares try to disagree is "intellectually dishonest" for not agreeing with you.

We all know you don't really WANT to debate anything. Mostly because you've proven time and again that you're not up to the task. You bring no cites, no sources, no facts, just lots of blather and bloviating opinion which you CLAIM are facts.

And when pushed on such matters, you simply blurt out that we're not worthy of conversing with you, and therefore you'll not bother to answer any questions, and then you run away from the post in a huff.

It's about more than simply changing people's minds, as far as I'm concerned. When you discuss and debate, you help hone and clarify your own views, as well as getting a perspective on how others see the world, even if you don't see it the same way. You might even be swayed in certain ways, edging towards a slightly different position. I'd say people move by degrees rather than do a complete 180 on their stand on things. But complete turn arounds have been known to happen when someone has been inspired by someone else's words.

Of course I'm referring to intelligent, articulate discussion, not the 'shut up you hairy lesbian' type of discourse that sometimes dominates these threads.

So very true. When I look at an issue, I *try* to look at it from different viewpoints, but really I can only see it from MY viewpoint, because I'm me. Singular. But listening to many other viewpoints and considering them all, I can start to get a better grasp on the issue, hold it in my hands in a sense, and turn it over and look at it from all sides. Oftentimes I find something I'd never have seen from my singular perspective. Some of them make me question my earlier views, some of them reinforce my positions.

The most important lesson I ever learned was taught to me by my wife, the smartest person I know: question every prejudice. When you find yourself thinking, "That's how 'they' are..." about any group, just ask: "WHY do you think that? WHAT do you base that on?" It's always illuminating.

I think that some people here want to change the minds of those who are more towards the center to pull them back towards the party line on one side or another.

I don't think that individually they could be successful, but sadly, the cooperative push an pull of the extremists stirs up the right amount of fear to get people to move to the side and stay out of the center.

In general, I think most of the actual thinking happens in the center, and so I try to get as close to it as I can. Good ideas can come from anywhere, I was most surprised to see one coming from Exxon Mobil, that's pretty close to the last place I expect (last is probably Halliburton or Blackwater, but it could happen ;) )

Threads on this topic have been posted before, but I was distressed that no one responded to my last post. I was originally intending to post this, what I just posted, but the fever went to my head and I posted that instead, and suddenly I felt as if I lived in a world which was much more fun.

What s/he said. Plus...

If I think I won't change anyone's mind, I don't tend to reply to them. Yep, I give up on people. If someone seems determined to live in their blindspots, that's their choice. Have at it.

Still, I can't stand to see blatantly wrong arguments stand unchallenged. I'll stay out of many a thread if someone else has already said what I think, but I cannot stand idle when bad logic is floating about out there, usually in terms of bad science that no one else has picked apart. I get twitchy when I see people misusing science and logic to support obviously weak ideas.

I figure: the lurkers are the ones to decide. They'll see who uses facts and who doesn't. And aren't the lurkers, the undecideds, the ones who really control things? (Well, other than those evil voting machine companies...)

You make me think, you probably changed my thinking on some things. Obviously some people more than others, and more often its those who aren't trying to who do.

As for Ally Sheedy, I actually thinking back think it's sort of cool for hollywood to give a geeky character like Matthew Broderick a gf like Ally Sheedy, it doesn't fit the stereotype, which even at the time would have given him a geeky male friend whose dad just happened to have access to some major corporate technology...

Okay, I confess, I was the guy who was a hacker because my dad had some major access to said technology and not Ally Sheedy hanging over my shoulder. Not usually. If only we were gifted enough to see how hot the girls who were just there all the time actually were.

Sorry, delirium. And thanks, Mike.

Thanks for letting me know. It's nice to know it's not ALL pissing in the wind. :)

The use of strawmen arguments, when you put words into my mouth that I never said and proceed to tell me why those imaginary words are all manner of horrible, is dishonest in civil discourse. I appreciate refrain from such tactics.

Sure,

You know the more I lie here feeling sick and watching clips of Ally Sheedy, the more I realize that this is basically where Buffy came from, they're very buffieque. Of course, not counting buffy gets a boyfriend scenes which were not as bad as wesley crusher gets a girlfriend, but lasted longer. Speaking of which, someone that was in something recently was hapless enough to have started out as a gf for wes and is now a successful actress. I just can't remember who it was.

CTS, even if you might not "change my mind", you've definitely gotten me thinking on some things. That's the first step to changing minds - opening them a bit!

I hate Obama's America. You're damn right about that.

Mr. President, you're a god damn, mother fucking liar.
Fuck you, you cock sucking community activist piece of shit.
... go fuck yourself, Mr. President.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I loved Sheedy in Breakfast Club. But then, I loved EVERYONE in Breakfast Club! I loved Breakfast Club! All those nubile young men and women...and look what happened to most of them...sigh. Youth is fleeting, especially in Hollywood.

Matthew Broderick was one of "those" who I like to spot early in their career (or early to ME) and watch how they develop. He's right for Broadway, I'm only sad that I get to see so little of him. Gawd he was cute!

So was Sheedy...one sexy little rebel in BC. Never cared for Ringwald, however.
