Sure, some are quick to pass it off as another military lie...but when has anything like this taken place ? If no warnings were posted by the FAA, and the military says it wasn't one of our birds...

No one here is even a smidge concerned ?

Curiosity alone is what gets me w/ this story. If it's some 'prank', or gimmick by a private citizen or company.... impressive.

The key words being "looks like".

Possibilities:

1) It's a plane, and the angle, course, speed, and light angles gave it an out-of-the-ordinary appearance, which isn't helped by video zoom flattening the depth of field.

2) It's a missile. Possibly ours - in which case no one seems to be fessing up. Possibly someone else's - in which case we could have a few issues, not the least of which is, who the hell got close enough to our coast to launch a missile, and why didn't we know they were there?

From the video, we can't really say if it was a ground-launched or sea-launched thing, *IF* it was a missile at all.

So there's no "news" reporting going on in this thread, just lots and lots of pure speculation. No matter how breathless "others" might get about it, there's nothing I can do about it from here, and there's not a whole lot I can uncover about it right now either. So to get into a panicky dither about it just seems foolish.

But then again, look who's panicking... ;)

I think that was the general consensus, at least among those who even noticed or responded. Just as long as it doesn't cause bleedover to the OTHER forums here from the "LookatME!LookatMEEEE!" crowd, I think it's going to stay as is.

It's a bit of a sop to those who don't come to RWED, because now they don't have to see a preponderance of RWED threads being basically the ONLY active threads much of the time. On the other hand, it makes the rest of the board look much slower and less active, in a sense, if you look at the active board and see threads that were last responded to a week ago...

My first guess is that it's something that was launched from Vandenberg.

My second guess is that it's a shoulder-fired missle like a Stinger.

My third guess is a model rocketry enthusiast built himself some sort of mega-rocket and launched it skyward. When I was a kid I built Estes Rockets. They had solid propellant fuel engines and could really take off, thousands of feet. I imagine in the last 35 years there would have been some major improvements to the hobby.

Fourth guess is that it's a home-made rocket built by Andy Griffith to be used to salvage space junk.

Col. Dave Lapan said the contrails -- which glowed orange in the sunset-streaked sky Monday evening -- looked like a rocket launch to some people, but "there was no threat to the U.S. homeland."

Lapan said no evidence exists to suggest that the streaks were "anything else other than a condensation trail from an aircraft."

The Pentagon initially was unable to explain the images of what witnesses took to be a high-altitude rocket launch off the coast of southern California at sunset Monday.

This corresponds with the conclusion of John Pike, a defense expert and the director of GlobalSecurity.org.

"It's clearly an airplane contrail," Pike said Tuesday.

"It's an optical illusion that looks like it's going up, whereas in reality it's going towards the camera. The tip of the contrail is moving far too slowly to be a rocket. When it's illuminated by the sunset, you can see hundreds of miles of it ... all the way to the horizon.

"Why the government is so badly organized that they can't get somebody out there to explain it and make this story go away ... I think that's the real story," Pike added. "I mean, it's insane that with all the money we are spending, all these technically competent people, that they can't get somebody out there to explain what is incredibly obvious."

A U.S. Northern Command official who didn't want to be identified had said the contrail could very well be from an airplane.

Rappy's reaction couldn't be called unexpected. After all, when you get your info from FauxNews, and they've breathlessly gone on-air with previous "alerts" like the ACORN non-scandal/fraud piece, and the Shirley Sharrod hit piece, etc., it's really no surprise that Rappy has a Chicken Little complex.

He's been trained in a Pavlovian fashion to shriek in terror at the slightest mention by FauxNews that something's amiss. And he does it, every single time.

You know what was a big hint that it was nothing? The reaction of people in the L.A. area. There basically WAS no reaction - and wouldn't you think there would be if people looked out toward Catalina Island and saw a missile plume streaking upward? Wouldn't switchboards shut down from the incoming flood of calls? Wouldn't every camera be trained on the plume?

Nope. Just one - and it was on an airborne helicopter, which distorted the view of the contrail and made it appear to be something it wasn't.

The modern definition of "socialist" is anyone who's winning an argument against a tea-bagger.
