Navy Makes Removal of Enterprise's Capt. Owen Honors Permanent

USS Enterprise Commander Was Popular and Successful Before Raunchy Videos Surfaced

The Navy is set to permanently remove Capt. Owen Honors as commander of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise today, according to Pentagon sources.

Pentagon leaders loss of confidence in Honor's ability to lead after raunchy videos he produced as an Enterprise officer in 2007 were leaked to a Virginia newspaper.

A replacement commander is expected be named at 2 p.m., although the ship will still sail in two weeks for a war zone.

Honors is not expected to be kicked out of the Navy, but losing command of the carrier will surely end his career advancement.

Over kill ? Or absolutely the right thing to do ?

I like funny. And it sounds like the crew enjoyed him too.... but is that the job of a captain ?

I'm asking, not real sure what to make of it all. Hadn't seen but clips of the videos.....

From what I've seen and heard, it SOUNDS like overkill.

I have a few questions regarding the vids and their airing aboard the ship.

1) Was anyone raped, or physically or psychologically coerced to participate in the making of the videos?

2) Was anyone coerced to WATCH the videos?

If the answer to both of those questions is "No", then I don't really give a fuck about the videos.

People of an age to be in the Navy and aboard a carrier tend to be in the prime of their sexually active years, so I don't think it's unheard of that they'd use salty language and sexually-charged language or imagery.

The other question I have is for the crew:

3) Is Capt. Honors a good captain? Is he an honorable man? Does he bring out the best in his crew, and protect them from harm to the utmost of his ability?

If so, the rest is bullshit and window dressing.

He showed some poor judgment and poor taste, but I'm not at all convinced that he showed the kind of poor judgment that would preclude him commanding a carrier. There have been military leaders who showed absolute genius in the field of battle and strategy, who had next to no people skills at all.

I think the brass hates how it looks, even though they may understand life on board a carrier isn't what most 'normal' folks, civilians, could understand.

Sounds like there wasn't too much of a problem, but it does kinda look bad. Not so much that these videos were played, but that the captain, wrote and took part in them.

I wonder who blew the whistle on this ?

Was it really just 1 bad apple, or did someone have an agenda? Seems petty, either way.

I agree, believe it or not. And that's the shame of it - the brass didn't yank his command because of his performance, but because HE MADE THEM LOOK BAD.

I'd *almost* like Obama, as CinC, to override them and tell them to put him back on his gorram boat, but that would never fly, because then some on the right would have a conniption about him assigning a pervert the command of a nuclear aircraft carrier, or overstepping his bounds and trying to tell the brass how to do their jobs...

Still, I'm not convinced that this guy should lose his command over this. And in essence, it really DOES put an end to his career. It's the Navy's way of telling him, "End of the road, bud. You're done here."

Yeah, that was his bad judgment, being in the vids at all. He most likely wanted to lighten things up and show that he was "just one of the crew", but that's where bosses always get in trouble...

If the Capt'n had written the skits, but never appeared on video, I think this never would have seen the light of day.

Some back room politics going on here. Sure, easy vehicle to drive this guy out the door with, but why now ? I can't believe this is about the videos. We may never know, but this is just the window dressing.

DREAMTROVE

Rap

I gnawed this over for a while and decided it was a FAIL.

Three things basically go into it:

1) Morale. The only reason anyone does anything like this. Morale is essential.

2) It looks bad to politicians, leaders, etc, but PR is their job. shuffle things around, do what you have to do

3) But ultimately if the uptightness of brass is going to remove competent people from command, then the result will be a less competent military.

In war, like in medicine, business and many other very tricky fields, you really don't have a lot of room for self sabotage before you find that you just sunk yourself.
