What?

Times get tough and you cut and run?

I. personally, have had to put up with being called all sorts of names. Had to watch as my ideas were ridiculed, dismissed and ignored.

Didn't stop me.

Guess some just don't have the grit to hack it.

Its hard to be mad at people who want to leave.

I mean, if they can't take a little pushback against their ideas... then wtf?

Goodbye to you
My trusted friend

We've known each other since we were nine or te
Together we've climbed hills and trees

Learned of love and A-B-C's

Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Goodbye
My friend
It's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky;
Now that the spring is in the air

Pretty girls are ev'rywhere
Think of me and I'll be there.

We had joy
We had fun

We had seasons in the sun;
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time.

Goodbye
Papa
Please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family;
You tried to teach me right from wrong

Too much wine and too much song

Wonder how I got along.
Goodbye
Papa
It's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky;
Now that the spring is in the air

Little children ev'rywhere
When you'll see them
I'll be there.

We had joy
We had fun

We had seasons in the sun;
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons have all gone.

Goodbye
Michelle
My little one

You gave me love and helped me find the sun;
And ev'ry time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground.
Goodbye
Michelle
It's hard to die

When all the birds are singing in the sky;

Now that the spring is in the air
With the flowers ev'rywhere;
I wish that we could both be there.

We had lives
We had fun

We had seasons in the sun;
But the stars we could reach
Were just star-fish on the beach.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Please pardon me for saying so, but one wonders how self-important and narcissistic you have to be in order to compare yourself favorably to the legendary defenders at the Hot Gates.

What epic battle must be conjured in the mind's eye in order for such a comparison to make sense? One wonders at the mind that can make such a comparison and feel validated in doing so.

Of course, a more serious student of history will remember who the Spartans were, and get a jolly good laugh at those who would pride themselves at emulation, even in fevered imagination.

Wanna know what a Spartan wedding night was really like? It's pretty hilarious, in an insane way. As soon as a Spartan girl got her first period, they grabbed her, shaved her head, dressed her as a boy, threw her down on her new husband's bed, and then, well, he had his way with her. What way was that? Since hubby had been in an all-male dorm since age seven, I'm betting that that night of lovin' was more like a skinny white boy's introduction to San Quentin after lights-out than it was like a chick flick. So when this movie shows the Spartan hero saying to his wife, "Goodbye, my love," I just had to laugh.

No Spartan ever told his wife he loved her. That would've been like treason, because the Spartan rulers wanted family ties snapped, so the only bond left was to the state. They left room for folks' natural urges by letting the women drink, which they did non-stop, and the men form what you might call close comradely bonds with their fellow soldiers.

In the ancient world, gay was a matter of who was on top. If you were a topper, that was fine; if you were the one getting in the ass, not so cool. In other words, prison rules. Sparta's leather-bar ways were a running joke to the ancient Greeks. The Spartans were stone killers - but they also preened like teenage girls before a battle. They grew their hair long, and before a fight they'd comb it, oil it, try out fetching new styles, put little baubles in their ears, anything to die young and leave a beautiful corpse.

Wulfie, you really should study the Spartans a bit more. I think you'd find they were the very essence of the "nanny state" you claim to fear so much. Newborn children were judged by the council of elders, and if found wanting in any way, were tossed to the garbage heap, literally. Is that really the road you want to go down?

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I have always been much more disturbed by the fact that the freedom-loving Spartans kept a majority of their society enslaved. Those slaves were routinely hunted for educational purposes.

It was this slavery that made the Spartans a largely isolationist culture. Every time they marched to war, they risked a slave uprising in the rear.

Now, I shall allow that many Spartan men probably did love their wives. One-note cultures don't exist in reality any more than they ought to in sci-fi. But evidence shows that their culture encouraged them to love their fellow warriors more. Evidence also demonstrates that their perception of freedom was shallow as spit. The real risk to freedom was in the conquest of Athens, not Sparta.

Finally, it should be noted that while the *thousands* of defenders at the Hot Gates did make a brilliant stand, many of the important battles of that conflict were fought at sea.

It should also be noted that while 300 Spartans fought bravely to the last man at the Hot Gates, so did 700 Thespians. No one ever remembers the Thespians. If absolute tenacity in war makes a man a warrior, then it was the Thespians, not the Spartans, who brought more warriors to the battle.

Wulf has many HATREDS. Much feeling. Lots of passion. Oh, and a good dose of PTSD. Ideas? Ask him to discuss and he posts a video of someone calling for some kind of violence. Not the mark of a man used to having ideas and thinking about them.

Now, I fully intend to get into detail with Wulf about his list of intolerances this weekend. And I fully expect that within one or two of my posts, Wulf will either bail from the thread or post yet another meaningless video.

It's to laugh, I have to admit.

But it illustrates just the point: Wulf lives in a Hollywoodized fantasy world, and BELIEVES IT. Give him a good dose of guys in black hats and guys in white hats--not matter how unreal, fantastical or inaccurate it may be, and he'll jump on board. Which is why I NEVER watch his videos.

I'd love to know exactly which RATIONAL ideas Wulf has presented. Mostly I see nothing but slogans and unrealistic claims for "us"--meaning himself--and slander of everyone else. No serious discussion, no facts, just flat overreaching statements which are 99% of the time wrong.

I'm happy for you and yours, Wulf, in seeing how much fun you had for the first half of this thread, before a few rational people came in. You illustrated what this place would turn into WITHOUT the remaining decent voices, which merely confirmed my opinion. You guys just want to be here to snark, attack, and pat yourselves on the back; you have nothing of value to add, nor do you have any DESIRE to. Kane admitted he's just here to snark; Wulf admitted he's just here to "one up" everyone else, then both illustrated exactly that.
