That is why you are a liberal.....you know you can't be trusted. So, sit back and watch the aussies shoot off fireworks....Your gov. will shoot them off for you, and make you buy healthcare, and make sure your back porch steps are up to code...they wouldn't want you hurting yourself...idiot.

Everyone be VEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRYYYY quiet. We wouldn't want people to find out about our socialist governments down here would we.

And yes they are very pretty. Were quite impressive from the harbour-side. And ironically, the only place we're legally allowed to buy fireworks is in our federal capital.

yes magon, theyre illegal here. most things are illegal in kost places in the us. swimming, for instance.also jaywalking, which would be walking across a road. consuming substances containing a long list of natural proteins essential to human survival, technically eating grapes or being human are enough to merit illegal possession, but fireworks they will actually arrest you for
like most things, if you ask they will say "september eleventh" but they were already doing it.

strange how i can be arrested for swimming with my trunks on in ky own water but the gas company upstrewm cannot be arrested for pouring 917 toxic chemicals in it.

its far worse than it appears. everyone lives in a state of perpetuql debt slwvery and everything is illegal, so if the worker bees move from their drone like state, they can be removed from the colony.

let me know if you still think the tea party doesnt have a point.

about a decade ago.. there was a white settler town on an indian reservation which was there when the system set up, so they created onebof those 99 year leases. when the lease came up, the media ran a lot of scare stories saying "everyone move quick, or youll all be considered indians!"

the local respose was "cool"

so the govt banned that too, in violation of our.own treaties, its now illegal for indians to set up indian reservations on land that they actually own and paid for. hell indian nations qnd tribes arent even allowed to buy land here now.

what the govt really doesnt want anyone to know is that we would far rather be guests of the indians than citizens of the great USA.

as i frequently say on this board, anyone who wants to overthrow america? im not going to stop them.

hell, wulfie can have it if he can pull it off.

Saying THAT is illegal too. Be careful, DT.

In fact, more and more speech has become illegal. If not illegal, then "harassable." Here is a quick recap of recent links posted right here on FFF (most of them by Frem).

1. Illegal to give terrorist organizations advice on how to achieve their goals non-violently, or to give people under their control humanitarian aid.

http://www.inthesetimes.com/article/6745/terrorist_by_association

2. Illegal (?)/ Harassable to give doctors, who help chronic pain patients advice, on how to fight legal charges.

http://www.slate.com/id/2278244/pagenum/all/

3. Illegal to draw on a piece of paper with a permanent marker (Sharpie) in school.

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/bizarre/boy-13-busted-illegal-m
arker-possession

4. Illegal to have a 911 Truth sticker on your airplane luggage.

http://www.times-standard.com/localnews/ci_10101475

5. Harassable to walk across the country carrying signs that say, "Stop 9/11 Cover Up" and "Real Christians don't choose war."

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

None of those are "illegal"...some are on private property, so the property owner has the right to deny them; some are "harrassable" as you said, but not illegal. And for every "harrassable" you bright up, just as many if not more can be put up to show how the opposite has ALSO been harrassable. If you try to point to the harrassment by police in the last one, my gawd, police harrass people for a gazillion reasons, different in every area of the country.

The only other thing I have to respond to, since this argument goes around and around endlessly and nobody can present "conclusive" evidence of one thing or the other, is the crack about species going extinct. It's a stupid statement which doesn't take into account that nature had a balance which we have destroyed, and when some of those species go extinct, they will cause the extinction of other species, which will eventually affect humans and, without some of which, our own extinction comes into question. To ignore the potential to ourselves by saying "they didn't survive, they didn't have the right to 'cuz we're Man and we rule" is just plain idiocy.

ETA: Oh, yeah, and yes, fireworks are illegal here, too. It's because of the danger of fire, which hasn't stopped people from doing it illegally and causing fires. I remember as a kid setting them off up and down our street, and I also remember all the injuries that resulted, as well as all the fires. I have no problem with letting the cities do it for us; besides, they do a better job.

If you want to split hairs, I'll grant room for argument on the rest of them.

But #1 is definitely illegal, as in against the law, upheld by the Supreme Court.

I'm not quite sure what the opposite of speech would be. Silence? I've never seen silence harassed by the police in the USA.

Let me redirect. The point is not cops harassing people. The point is speech in the USA is increasingly the punished by legal proceedings and prosecutions, if not the speech itself, then for some other pretext for the purposes of shutting the individual up.

The point is: our First Amendment is rapidly eroding, if not effectively gone.

MAGONSDAUGHTER

I just wanted to let you know that private fireworks are illegal in most states here as well. And that it may surprise you to learn that those Sydney fireworks were not done by a group of clever and well coordinated citizens, but by Sydney's local council. ie the government.

The government is a body of clever and well coordinated citizens (in this case), usually notably ungoverned.

"Silence? I've never seen silence harassed by the police in the USA."

Hello,

I'm sure that if an authority asks you a question, Silence would become quite harass-able.

My comment was intended to indicate that free speech is ALLOWED in as many different ways as it is harrassed. I don't think our free speech is being eroded; "back when", saying the wrong thing (especially in the South) could get you hung! I think people are freer to say whatever they want than they have been in the past, personally.

I find "effectively gone" an exaggeration. Look at what politicians, Michelle Bachman prime example) and people on Fox say, just as one example. Sure, people get head up about silly things, but I see people saying things about Obama daily that would have caught HELL under Bush. Remember the people arrested for anti-Bush T-shirts, for example?

Magons: Gandalf. Gandalf makes fireworks. And yes, around here it is usually done either by the local authorities, but by paying some professional company to do it.

Anthony: Good point, tho' I don't think it pertains to what she meant.
