Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier remained huddled inside his hotel Monday, as the reasons behind his unexpected return to Haiti and what he hoped to accomplish remained unclear.

Duvalier returned to his homeland Sunday after some 25 years in exile, adding uncertainty into an already turbulent situation.

A scheduled press conference at his hotel Monday was canceled at the last minute because the hotel was not equipped to handle the crowd, and no other location could be found, Henry Robert Sterlin, a Duvalier associate, told reporters.

Sterlin said that the former dictator had returned because he was moved by the anniversary of last year's tragic earthquake, and because he missed his homeland.

The associate said he did not know how long Duvalier was staying, and added that he was not afraid to come back.

He arrived in the Haitian capital as the nation is grappling with a political crisis, sparked by fraud allegations in a presidential election.

Duvalier, wearing a dark suit and tie, greeted supporters at the busy Port-au-Prince airport. He was traveling with his wife.

Personally, I'm shocked. I can't believe anyone would let that evil cocksucker within 5000 miles of the place. There are entire generations of Haitians for whom the mere mention of the words "Ton-ton Macoute" will induce the shivering night-terrors. How could they have let him return? What level of hell is this place, where a monster like Baby Doc looks like any kind of savior?

Hello,

There are Russians who, to this day, think Stalin was a good, strong leader.

When people are hopeless and scraping the gutter, it's amazing what can seem like a good idea.

Anthony answered you perfectly:

I was incredulous as well, and what it says to me is that things ARE that much of a "hell" there now. As you said, there are so many who are still alive who remember, that it seems impossible they would want to return to that. But it seems any kind of "stability" looks good right now--maybe only to those who DON'T remember, but maybe even to some who do.

You can also view it on a much, MUCH milder front; after the insanity of eight years of Republicans, an awful lot of the country wants to return to their rule...and here, almost EVERYONE is old enough to remember! There also exist (even here) those who believe BUSH was a good, strong leader. Soooo...?

Blacks, in general, are not very smart. Even here in the US, 90% + voted for Obama. It took millions of years and hundreds of mutations for the homo-sapian mind to reach its full potential in the noggin of the white man. That being said, EVEN whites do crazy things now and again.....go easy on the blacks. They can't help themselves.

DREAMTROVE

Wyclef, alas, was not allowed to run, they pulled him from the ballot because he didn't have 5 years residency. Sure you could argue that he should have moved back earlier to fill the requirement, and I don't know if he's there now, he was last I heard, so maybe he'll be able to run again next election.

But realistically, the Hatian govt. changes the requirements to run whenever they want to, and have in the passed to ban populist candidates.

All of that said, Wyclef Jean would undoubtedly have made a better president than Rene Preval, who, IMHO, is an unmitigated disaster, as was Duvalier, as was Alexandre. The only one I have any respect for so far is Aristide, who is in exile.

Wulf,

Kudos for digging up the video

Niki,

Why are you snarking Wulf, again, who made an actual comment about an actual Hatian candidate for president.

I somewhat agree with Wulf, they'd be better off if Wyclef were president, even if the idea sounds absurd. He was just barred from the ballot.

My personal choice would be Aristide, but he's not allow to run either. That's corruption for you, and also Haiti.

The outside manipulators, the US and France, should back off.

Mike, Anthony, everyone actually,

Personally, I think it's a trick.

Someone is supporting Duvalier because Duvalier is an idiot, and will believe that he can in, but they're not doing it to win.

The problem is that Preval cannot run again, and so has chosen a hand picked successor, who won the plurality, but cannot win a runoff.

So, Preval has been trying to rig the run off.

The accusation is that the US and France are trying to install Duvalier against Preval's chosen successor, who I think is Celestin.

But what would really happen in a runoff between Celestin (or whoever it was) vs Duvalier? Duvalier would lose, hands down.

Ergo, IMHO, it's a trick. By making the alternative to a continued Preval govt. "Baby Doc" Rene Preval guarantees his continuation of power.

Which is what the US and France really want as well.

As to Wycleff, don't get me wrong. I wouldn't want him to be Prez here. BUT, of all the candidates, he would have done the most good for Haiti.

Haiti is about as bad as it can get right now.

Believe it or not, I actually agree with you on every single thing in this post. Even the part about Wulf and the unnecessary sniping at him. That video WAS relevant, and probably more than a little prophetic. If Wyclef was President, he would no doubt be assassinated. But he doesn't seem to want to let that stand in his way.

If I were of any kind of religious bent, I'd take the continual suffering of Haiti as a sign that there is a god, and that (s)he is cruel, petty, vindictive, and evil beyond all human imagining.

Why not here?

I get that Wyclef isn't eligible to run for the presidency here (being Kenyan, and Muslim, after all. ), but what about him is so much worse than the garden-variety politicians we generally elect?

And if he's not good enough for us, why is he good enough for Haiti?

I'm actually curious as to your reasoning on this one.

Couple of reasons actually. And yes, that vid was important, and part of my reasoning.

A snipet from it. "
If I was president all blacks would have reparation, no segagation I would lead the nation..."

For a nation like America, you can't single out one group. We are all Americans and thats it.

But for Haiti? They need a common uniting factor. I know a bit of their history, and more than most what its like there.

They live on a rock. Its the shit side of the whole island. Nothing grows there, and the best they can hope for is to get work from the Dominicans. Or fish, but very few do that.

(Which brings up a whole nother thing.. the potatoe famine with the Irish. You live on a fuken ISLAND, so you are starving because you can't eat a potato? Jeeze, learn from the Japanese...but I digress..)

So no. Wycleff wouldn't be a good President here. But there? Sure. Why not? He obviously cares enough, and wants to help. Its got to be better than Doc..

First, my apologies to Wulf; I know little to nothing about Haiti and didn’t know who Wyclef was; I am guilty of assuming, assuming that the video (which I never watch) was about something having nothing to do with Haiti. I should not assume.

Second, DT, that was an interesting take on it, and I think it might possibly explain him coming back. When I heard it I could only shake my head, feeling much the same as Mike’s first response. But seen in that light, I can only say “hmmmm....”

Lastly, Wulf, you are incorrect. I just responded directly and civilly to you TWICE in the Schwarzenegger thread, despite the fact that the posts I was responding to had their own share of snarks. I attempted to compliment you on your words and questions because I was impressed to hear YOU, rather than just see a video. I have done so whenever what you have had to say has been a realistic contribution, not just hero/villain videos and/or snarks. I respond even tho’ your mindset often blows me away and the it’s frustrating that you don’t seem capable of seeing anything in other than black-and-white terms and feel violence is the ONLY solution to nearly everything. When someone contributes to the discussion and I have something to respond, I do so, whether they agree with me or not. Nobody has to read my responses, any more than I read past the first word or two of Kane’s (and that only to see if by chance he MIGHT have something of value to say rather than just his idiocy and hatred of me).

By the way, thank you for

When people say “why don’t they (whatever), when the DR, on the same island, has?”, I know some of the reasons. But those I did not know, so I appreciate learning about those facts.

I will now go back and watch the video, and no doubt learn more.

ETA: Okay, that was interesting. Given my ignorance, who is Wyclef; is he just a singer, or something more?

I *am* of a "religious" bent, and this is exactly what I believe...

But I refuse to ignore our own contributions either, given what WE (as in we, the United States, our Armed Forces and Intelligence Assets) did to Aristead - not to mention us propping up and supporting fuckers like Papa Doc in the first place.

While we can acknowledge the influence of "the outsider", the malicious-vampiric THING which feeds on human misery and manipulates the gullible and authoritarian to cause as much of it as possible to get its fix...

Throwing it into the lap of a diesm, no matter how vile, does not in any way absolve us humans of our own, HUMAN responsibility for these things either, no more than "Just Following Orders" in any other case.

I guess what bothers me most is that so many ardently worship and intentionally serve a diesm proven to be so terribly monstrous - does this make them "Evil", when they do so KNOWING of its malice ?

A hard, hard question that - and the root of my aggression towards those who serve it.

I do not serve the Blind God.

I am of a religious bent.

But I realize 3 things.

1. God gave us free-will, how we use it is up to us.

2. Don't blame God for how others use their gift.

3. How we use it, determines whom we serve.

Hating God for the evil men do is like hating the President for the wrongs that Austrailia does.

He doesn't control it, just made it so things can happen.
