I'm sure most have heard what her husband had to say by now...

Gabrielle Giffords, the US congresswoman injured in the Arizona shooting, had lived in fear of being shot but refused to cut back public appearances because of her sense of duty, her astronaut husband has revealed.

Mark Kelly, a Nasa space shuttle commander, said his wife had frequently voiced concerns about her safety, including just two weeks before the Tucson attack.

"She'd received death threats before … just part of what we've been dealing with for the last year," he said in a TV interview. "She says, 'You know, some day I'm really worried somebody's going to come up to me at one of these events with a gun.'"

And speaking to local media at the Tucson hospital where Ms Giffords is recovering, he spoke of how his wife tolerated sometimes aggressive confrontations from constituents. He said: "She'd say, 'Hey, people have the right to tell me what they think ... that's part of democracy."

Is anyone surprised that she called it, given the violent rhetoric of the past couple of years? I'm positive she's not the only one who's been afraid... It may not be to blame for this one, but I believe it was contributory, and the way people have been talking may well be the cause of something else in the future.

Sickening. Courageous lady--I hear she stood up yesterday. Go Gabby!

"The way people have been talking?"

Oh, you must mean all the endless hatred, images of death, and smear attacks by the Left against Conservatives going back to the Bush years and right up to Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck now, right? I mean, to your way of thinking it should be a crime in the first place to be a Conservative, right?

Good thing no one actually takes Liberal pundits seriously, or we might have had many Conservatives attacked over the years. Where did THESE nuts get THEIR hateful ideas from? Hmmmm? I wonder if any Liberals would ever then blame their own for incitement to violence? As it is now, the Left has whipped up so much hatred against the Right with lies, misrepresentations, and demented imaginations that most in the public eye now who are Conservative need body guards around them 24/7. :

That's why I've never openly (as in daily personal interactions with folk) claimed to be conservative, even when I thought I was one. Not entirely sure what I'd call myself as is, but that's another subject. Anyway, I basically lived in the university fine arts building with all the other idealistic naive should have chosen a different major hopeless romantics, most of which were overwhelmingly liberal (which gave me a bad impression of liberals for a while). Of course, I've never feared for my life, it just wasn't worth the hassle and harassment of being identified as conservative. There were two openly republican people I knew of in the building and everyone (including professors) seemed to hate them.

The ironic thing, is I could have civil and even intelligent conversations on political issues with most of these people, but as soon as it became a liberal vs conservative type thing, the gloves were off and so were the thinking caps! One of the clubs was making anti bush T shirts as a fundraiser and I said I thought it was a mite disrespectful and caught a hell of a shitstorm for being 'intolerant' (ironic that...). I didn't tell them not to do it or defend Bush in any way, I just told a friend I felt it was disrespectful to make a blatantly insulting t-shirts targeting our President and selling them at a state funded University for a university club. For the record, I'd feel the same way if they did something similar and anti Obama, but that would never happen, cause anything anti Obama must be racist.

I'm sure this thread will see no shortage of stories or examples of groups of conservatives being general dicks to liberals, but my point isn't to defend conservatives, just to relay my experience and say it goes both ways more often than most seem to remember or believe.

"Hey pot, this is kettle, you're black."

I disagree with this statement as we have no evidence violent political rhetoric influenced this insane man, but I would like to point out that nikki did not say 'right wing rhetoric', but 'violent rhetoric,' so we shouldn't assume it's meant to be an anti-conservative slant.
