Day Eight of the Wisconsin Protests brings yet another plot twist. The official Committee on Senate Organization authorized a rule change that will force the 14 Democrats who have been hiding out across state lines in Illinois to show up for work if they expect to get paid. As reported in the Green Bay Press Gazette:

Wisconsin state senators who miss two or more session days will no longer get paid through direct deposit. They’ll have to pick up their checks in person on the Senate floor during a session.

The new rule is aimed at forcing the return of 14 Senate Democrats who have been hiding in Illinois since Thursday. They fled the state to stall a vote on an anti-union bill, and have threatened to stay away until Republican Gov. Scott Walker agrees to compromise.

Tuesday’s vote was along party lines. The three Republicans on the Committee on Senate Organization voted for it and the two Democrats opposed it.

Miss two days of “work,” no more direct deposit. The new rule applies to paychecks, per diem payments, and expense reimbursements

K-man, now that is hilarious.

The two democrats that voted against just fled the state. If I knew it was this easy to get Dems out of my state, I would have pushed my governor to try the same.

They're only paid peanuts in their govt paycheck. The real payoff is by legalized bribery from the lobbyists (unions) that pay 1,000% more.

The traditional way of getting them to vote is to drag them back kicking and screaming by police arrest.

State Rep. Michael Tryon (R-Crystal Lake) said he will sponsor legislation to impose the state’s 5-percent individual income tax on the out-of-state lawmakers while they are here to avoid votes on union-busting legislation in their home states and ostensibly working.

“If you’re a movie star and come here and work, we’ll tax you. If the Green Bay Packers come to Soldier Field and play a game, they are paying the income tax,” Tryon claimed.

“But we have legislators from Wisconsin who are working here for the purpose of denying a quorum. We know they’re working here because they say that on TV. When you work in Illinois, you ought to pay the tax,” Tryon said.

HILARIOUS....Man, I can't take much more of this. It just gets funnier by the day.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Wulf, I gotta say: You are heading in exactly the WRONG direction. Don't you recognize your own self interest? If you add value to the economy, YOU should have a good pension, too. Not the Wallstreeters who've been ripping everyone off.

There are only a few people on this board who have a valid interest in making the rich richer: Kaneman and Rappy (and their numerous sock puppets) who are stock traders. Not you. The only one who will be hurt by this is you.

Probably won't break the unions, probably won't be a blow to corrupt government or protect wage earners. Everyone will always find new and exciting ways to screw other people.

As usual, when the rules get in the way, the fuckers at the top ignore them, break them, or re-write them, often in direct defiance of the legislative process.

I know some of you idiots can't count to eleven with your shoes on, but take off your shoes and get a pencil - count the "voice vote" and then COUNT HOW MANY REPRESENTATIVES ARE THERE...

And then try to tell me that's not bullshit, I defy you.

Yup.

The "come get your paychecks" thing didn't work, by the way, and Indiana legislators have joined them. -- we might end up with legislators from all the states trying this being in OTHER states than their own. Ramming things like this through--or trying to--doesn't work toow well. When he's willing to sit down and TALK about it (and that's not another ploy), then if they don't come back people will have the right to dump on them.

I'm assuming those defending Walker didn't pay attention to that faked "Koch" phone call, where he laid it all out. He tried several ploys, besides the check thing.
Quote:

Walker also outlined a ploy to get the Wisconsin Fighting 14 back to the state. He would offer to talk to the minority leaders in both the senate and the assembly, along with the majority leaders, if the senators came back into session. Once they went into recess so leadership could talk with the governor, the 19 senate republicans could act because Walker believes the democrats don't legally need to be physically present since they had the necessary quorum prior to the recess. The really sleazy part is that he emphasized that he would just talk with them and had absolutely no intention of negotiating with them.

And Walker seemed particularly anxious to reassure Koch that the only reason he would talk to the democrats is to lure them in: "if you heard I was going to talk to them, that would be the only reason why".

Another tactic Walker said they are exploring is the possibility of filing ethics code violations against the Wisconsin Fighting 14 if the unions are found to have been paying for the senators' food and lodging. They are also awaiting an opinion from Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen as to whether felony "misconduct in office" charges could be filed for "obstruction of their ability to do their job". Seriously. I am not aware of any evidence that the unions have paid for any senator's food or lodging.

Indeed, Walker made his intentions perfectly clear:
Quote:

If they think I'm caving, they've been asleep for the last 8 years....we don't budge... we don't compromise.
Gov. Walker made it clear he sees neither collective bargaining nor the ability to organize a union as basic rights of workers.

Even more disturbing is his cavalier attitude towards the loss of jobs, seeing public employees as no more than pawns in what is clearly a game for him. He brazenly outlines his strategy to sacrifice the jobs of thousands of public employees in order to put public pressure on the senate democrats to return to the state:
Quote:

I've got lay-off notices ready... we'll announce Thursday...next week 5 to 6000 state workers will get at-risk notices ...we might ratchet that up a little bit too.
But what else would one expect from someone who not only refuses to negotiate, but has plans to lure the other side to the table with no intention of bargaining in good faith?
