Americans (usually liberal) who use British terminology.

Examples:

"I'm going to the loo."

"My car gets GREAT petrol mpg."

Its creepy, and generally pathetic.

That is all.

I can't stand it when anyone goes out of their way to speak in a certain accent/dialect. I mean, it's one thing if it just comes naturally like, then it's kind of charming, but when it's forced... it's like listening to a 6th grade saxophone choir or nails on a chalkboard.

'Energy' in a band can be an appropriate description in any dialect, but when it comes to a person I would describe them as 'energetic.' Unless this 'energy' is some form of hipster BS meant to describe something they are too lazy, ignorant or apathetic to describe properly. What was that video KPO posted? Being a Dickhead's cool! lol

Organic

AND

People who cannot eat anything unless its "organic."

"Hmm, should I get THIS celerary stick, or THAT one? Oooo, that celery stick says ORGANIC on it. And since I have all this disposable income (thanks mom and day, you are just great). I'll pay 3 dollars extra for the ORGANIC celery stick."

For fucks sake, they even have organic dry cleaners now.

"Nothin' wrong with eating organic by choice IMO, but it can be annoying to have an organic nut in the group on a road trip who refuses to go anywhere but like 1 or two places where he know's he can get an organic something. Basically he uses the 'organic card' to decide where we would all eat.

I'd eat organic all the time if it were cheaper and more available. As is, it's too much a pain in the ass to really be worth it.

OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!!!!!!!!

VEGETABLES ARE ORGANIC BY THEIR FUCKING NATURE!!!!!!! JESUS TAP DANCING CHRIST!!!! CAN ANYONE REALLY HAVE A NON-ORGANIC VEGETABLE??!!!!

IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?

"I want non-dairy MILK"!!!!!!!

I hate people right now and want an ORGANIC virus to wipe out at least 9/10ths of us all.

I'll even die. I'll make that sacrifice. JUST SO THAT OUR RACE OF SPOILED APES CAN BE CUT DOWN TO SIZE!

I mean seriously, how do these people walk around without helmets? Why don't they die when the shower water hits the soft-spots in their cranial cavity?

Organic has several different meanings, Wulfwad.

One of the meanings is "pesticide-free." That is the meaning when a vegetable has the label "organic" on it.

If you don't like pesticide-free food, feel free to avoid it. What's with attacking those who like that stuff? I thought you were about freedom of choice?

Uh, CTTS, you DID realize you were responding to Wulf, didn’t you? One snark, one half-way decent response to the thread, and one rant. That’s about average, wouldn’t you say? As to being for being for ANY sort of freedom, we’ve already put that one to death; he’s for any freedom HE wants to use and any freedom HE thinks others deserve. Nothing more. You know all that...

As for me, never met anyone with a fake accent, so I can't say. The list of things that grind my ass is too long to go into, but I only notice them in passing, so it's no biggie. I suppose at the top of the list is "controllers". Big fish in little ponds who don't know how to interact with others without trying to control them. Forum moderators. The woman on horseback who gave me shit about my dogs being off leash on the trail (and my dogs never bother ANYONE or any horse)--she was "deputized" by the rangers, but had no power to do anything. Or the woman recently who gave me shit about smoking in the dog park and said she was gonna go call the cops on me. People like that, who just CANNOT help themselves from attacking anyone not doing what they want.

People like that gravitate toward things that give them power, like being policemen or heading up some group or others. They invariably make me want to spit.

Hey, DT, did you mean "You have winning typing skills" or "You have lovely winning skills" works both ways...

I don't have a problem with that. Nomenclature is not the consumer's fault, however, going back to Wulf's pet peeve about consumers.

Organic comes from the term "organic" farming, which refers to farming methods relying on organic materials rather than synthetic ones (pesticides).

So "organic" is not meant to describe the product, but the ingredients used in the process of making the product.

And this is where it gets ALL sorts of fun, helmet-heads!

Its organic cus they don't use pesticides, right! YAY!

Except...

In the same amount of space they use to grow their hippie-melons.... 3x the amount of food could be produced.

AND IT WOULD LAST LONGER.

MMMMM, IRRADIATED.

So while you are sinking your teeth into that apple that may (or may not) have worms in it, and gushing over how mushy androtten it sort of tastes... think on this.

In the area that apple was grown, with all those hippie pest control measures (like vinegar)... 3 trees could be producing a GOOD apple.

But keep paying 3x the price. After all, rotten apples with worms are worth it. Considering it ties up the space of those that could actually produce good fruit.

YAY ORGANIC.

If you're paying 3X the price for organic produce, you're shopping wrong.

I generally will pay a *little* more for organic, pesticide-free produce, depending on the season and the produce. Organic celery tastes quite a bit better, as do organic carrots. And since I go through more than a pound of each per week, I'd prefer to NOT be awash in insecticides. I know you don't believe in such things, Wulfie, but you really should read up on things like 2,4,5T and other chemicals that used to be sprayed anywhere and everywhere, and some of the outcomes of those actions.

I'll pay more for organic strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, too.

What I'd really like to know, though, is this: What's it to you? What do you care what others spend their money on?

I mean, you've stated before that you really want a 5.0 Mustang. Does is grind your gears if we start telling you how inefficient and wasteful that car is, or how stupid you are for paying $4 a gallon to fill up your gas-guzzler, or how many more efficient cars you could run on the gas you're pissing away?

As a libertarian, you should believe in private property rights. They can produce as much or as little food as they wish. If they want to grow no fruit trees at all, and dance around naked at midnight, and charge people to see it, it's their prerogative, right?

Quote:

But keep paying 3x the price.
Again, as a libertarian, you should be supporting their right to charge however much they wish, as long as no one is forced to pay them. If I want to pay $25 or $250 or $2,500, or $25,000 for a dress, isn't it my prerogative to decide what the product is worth to me?

OK, so maybe you think organic produce consumers are stupid. Whatever. I buy organic whenever I can because I don't want to eat pesticides. So I'm stupid for not wanting to ingest poisonous chemicals that kill bugs. Eh, I've been called worse.

I wonder if it'd grind Wulfie's gears to know that the engine in the 5.0 Mustang isn't even five liters, but around 4.944? Even the new ones (2011+) with the Coyote V8 still aren't 5.0's.

Meh, everybody seems to fudge on displacement numbers. Oddly, my old Honda, they DOWNSIZED the advertised displacement - it was a 1342cc, and they called it a 1300.

Worst is probably the Mercedes 6.3 - which displaces all of 6208cc. They're fudging by a full nine-tenths of a liter! And that was BEFORE the latest versions, which still get credit for the 6.3 in the nomenclature (CLS63 AMG, for instance), despite using a 5.5 liter V8 now.

So on a cosmic scale, Ford's a minor offender.

As to what grinds my gears:

- Hypocrites.

- People who do other stuff in their car besides keeping their eyes on the road and DRIVING.

- People who sit at the computer whinging about stuff and not doing anything about it.

- Spongebob Squarepants.

- The lack of a sequel to Spaceballs.

People who get their knickers in a twist about petty, ridiculous things ?

Oh, and for small engines, scooters and whatnot, they tend to "cheat" DOWN the actual numbers, often for legal/licensing reasons - in MI anything up to 50cc can be licensed one way, anything over must be licensed another...

And here's the problem with that, the full on motorcycle license test *requires* using a manually shifted cycle, because clutch and gear operation is part of the test - this is impossible for me due to prosthetics and nerve damage, despite the fact that I can ride and operate anything that isn't manual all the way up to a freakin Honda Gold Wing Trike!
Not to mention many Scooter/Cycles like the SilverWing and others have 500cc or more in displacement, but a variator-type automatic transmission, which is quite reliable cause it's only three moving parts, but I digress...

Because of that silly requirement, I *have* to cheat down the displacement of my skimmer to 50cc, which is a bit of a cheat, but honestly short of taking the bloody thing apart (and me being the only mechanic in three COUNTIES that even knows how...) there's no way in hell you're gonna prove otherwise.

Anyhow, I think it's ridiculous to require manual transmission knowledge for an operator who neither owns, nor ever plans to operate, a manual transmission vehicle - they don't do it for cars, right ?

CTTS, dear, you ARE talking to Wulf, you know... The freedoms he espouses are only those HE wants at any given moment, and he contradicts himself constantly (as you pointed out). As to why it might bother him (as an AWFUL lot of the world does...exceedingly!), this thread is about what grinds one's gears, right? I think Wulf's gears get ground by many, many things, and we were invited to speak them.

I buy organic when I can afford it, and here, too, it's not much more expensive than regular. As to three trees growing, etc., given the state of our agriculture, things like that don't even register! Nonetheless, given he'd rather stuff himself with pesticides and call everything he hates "hippie", his love of pesticides is just evolution in action, yes?

On the other hand, one that was missed until Wulf brought it up, and is very on-point to me: “- People who do other stuff in their car besides keeping their eyes on the road and DRIVING.” Damn straight.

I agree with Wulf on both of those, except for RLS. It's a very real problem, and has been for a long time for those of us who take psychotropics, just to educate you on the issue (not that you care). It's caused by meds only, has no natural causes; just another one of those "cute" side effects Big Pharma wants us to ignore. RLS is DAMNED difficult for those who suffer from it, and they have any rational person's sympathy for what they suffer. Which of course leaves you out, Wulf.

Sometimes those of us with severe physical disorders (including, but not limited to, mental illness) have to learn to live with side effects that you couldn't even HANDLE, little man. Nonetheless, yes, I hate what has happened to America with regard to medicine and advertising, too. We'll see an ad on TV and Choey or I will pipe up how that med affected us...not only did it not do it's job, it CAUSED more problems. I would disuade anyone from ever taking Lunesta, which ended in suicide for a friend of Choey's, or ambien (which most people have found TOTALLY useless), and many more.

Big Pharma definitely has Americans convinced they need meds for things they don't, and is making tons of money off our attitude of "take a pill for it". I HATE their being allowed to advertise at ALL. At the same time, I'm kind of glad they've come up with SOMETHING for RLS, which people have been suffering from for decades.

Meh, I've changed more than a few clutches. If yours is a pain in your ass, you've likely got the pilot shaft in the wrong hole, or you've blown a seal or thrown out a throwout bearing. But you already know all about getting shafts in your wrong hole...

Remember, I used to make money building and tuning racing Hondas, up to and including developing and building custom-geared racing transmissions. Clutches and synchronizers are no big whoop to me. Biggest trick to rebuilding a Honda transmission is getting the thrust washers in in the correct orientation - they're tricky, and getting it wrong means the shifter fork for the 2-3 gears will bend over time, and you'll be looking at a full transmission rebuild. Better to do it right the first time. I learned that one the hard way, but fortunately, I learned it on my own car, not on a customer's car.

I also built the transmission in my "just for fun" weekend car, just to see how far we could stretch things with off-the-shelf Honda parts. A 4.43:1 final drive source from a Japanese-market Honda Integra with the DOHC 1.6 "ZC" engine, a Mugen-Honda clutch-type limited-slip differential (LSD), also from the Japanese home market (JDM), the first-thru-fourth gears from that ZC transmission, and the fifth (overdrive) gear from a US-spec CRX-HF, spinning the driver's side intermediate shaft from a 4WD '88-'92 Wagovan, putting power through Zaxles racing CV axles, all fed by a mildly breathed-on SOHC D16A6 Si engine with zero external mods, but plenty of internals, adds up to a fun little sleeper CRX that runs pretty comfortably with the new 197hp Civic Si, while getting significantly better mileage.

Wiki won't tell you most of that info. Have to check out d-series.org, Honda-Tech.com, or the crxcommunity.org.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello Trader,

In fairness to hats-wearing indoors, there are three factors in modern society that make the practice more common and practical than in days gone by.

1) Hat-racks. Because it is no longer entirely common to wear hats, there is no longer a common place to store them while you occupy a building.

2) Theft. Because theft is considered to be much more common in the current age (whether it really is or not, I can't say, but that's the perception) even if there was a place to store your hat, it may not be desirable to do so. Some hats cost in excess of a hundred dollars, and that's quite an investment to risk.

3) Baseball Caps. The casual hat of the modern era, baseball caps are typically not removed when someone steps into a store to purchase something. Even though they can be folded and pocketed, it has become common not to bother. Hence, baseball cap wearers are contributing to loose hat standards in modern society.

Personally, I do not remove my hat unless I am *sitting* indoors. If I were visiting a bookstore and perusing the shelves, you would not see me with a hat tucked under one arm while I awkwardly peruse the merchandise. However, if I sit down with a book and examine it in more detail, my hat will be resting on my knee.

Hello Wulf,

Most dogs are 'toys' when compared to the original stock material. All dogs are twisted by selective breeding into an unnatural shape ideal in the eyes of their human masters. Dogs are, as a whole, 'fake' creatures.

Buy a Wolf, Wulf, if you want something 'real.'

HARDWARE

After reading this thread I decided to chime in;

What grinds my gears is the fact that I cannot purchase a base model truck or car in the US that comes with a 4 cylinder diesel engine.

VW and Toyota are just 2 of the international corporations that offer them, every BUT North America. In fact, a diesel engine is almost always considered an upgrade option in the US.

The more I get to know people the more I like my dogs.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Okay, Anthony, I gotta pipe up in defense of Huskies. They're a relatively "new" breed from wolves, and still resemble them to the point where some people mistake them (believe me, I know!). They were "bred down" slightly from wolves, bred for short-distance speed and the ability to pull a load, but otherwise any changes from wolves were a result of breeding for other factors, not to change the original design. Sorry, just couldn't let that pass.

I sincerely hope Wulf NEVER gets a wolf...my deepest sympathy would be for the wolf. He couldn't handle it anyway, and certainly not handle it properly!

But thats ok. Their parents worked hard (maybe).

So, maybe one day I too could work really hard, make a lot of money, send my children to the finest of fine institutions...

then afterwards my progeny would whine, bitch, moan, cry about the people that are less better off (b/c this is what they are taught to do).

They might even piss me off so much I cut them off...

then they could start sucking on the teat of everyone else... pretend they have some "sickness" (this is, of course another name for WEAKNESS)

and go raise dogs.

Huskies maybe?

All the while pretending the dogs are the children they couldn't possibly hope to raise. Or bear.

I'm sure, as a father, I would be so proud.

1) Diesel costs more likely because there ISN'T more demand for it. It's seen as being less "desirable" in the U.S., and thus harder to find, especially low-sulfur blends. U.S. refineries have the capacity to refine far more diesel than they do - and it's far easier TO refine diesel, needing much less actual *refining*. They CHOOSE not to do so, because there isn't much demand. Ergo, what they DO refine tends to be priced higher. They could make more, but the price would go down, so why bother?

Buyers typically don't get interested in diesel in this country unless there's a spike in gasoline prices. Carmakers have been burned far too many times by the finicky practices of American car buyers. When gas hits $4/gallon AND STAYS THERE, people will get interested.

2) Why aren't there diesel hybrids? THAT is an excellent question. It just so happens I was wondering the same thing earlier this week, while reading a review of the VW Touareg Hybrid. There was a remark about how much more expensive it it than the TDI Diesel version, for not really any better mileage, and I found myself asking why they didn't combine the hybrid's electrical system with the diesel's superior torque and mileage. In fact, a diesel-electric hybrid is probably one of the best bets for a hybrid sports car, as counterintuitive as that may sound.

People buy horsepower, but they drive torque. What that means is, people always come into the dealership armed with the horsepower figures, and "knowing" exactly what they think they want. But when they drive something with more torque and less horsepower, they invariably like it better. Diesels are fantastic at providing high torque and low horsepower. Hybrid electrical systems are fantastic at providing extra torque right off the line, since an electric motor provides its maximum torque from zero RPM. As such, a diesel-electric hybrid would provide bountiful torque at launch (via the electric assist), AND would keep that torque curve quite flat until close to redline. Power you can feel, AND power you can really use.

The U.S. seems to be the only market on Earth where diesels are so looked down upon. Hell, Europe even gets diesel Honda Civics! I'd actually love the idea of a four-cylinder diesel Jeep Wrangler, or even something simple along the lines of the old Isuzu Trooper, with a diesel. Unfortunately, nobody's likely to offer such a thing here, because when they have in the past, people stayed away in droves, because it seems everyone wants a Hemi...

Remember the old VW "pickup" that was really just a Rabbit with a bed grafted on? Buddy of mine (hardcore VW guy) had one of those that he rescued from a junkyard. It was a diesel, and he swapped over full GTI suspension setup onto the thing. Still a diesel, still slow, great mileage, strong car, but now with some fantastic handling and the ability to haul more than just ass. Fun little rig. He even kitted it out with the GTI interior!

I'd love to see a VW Polo Bluemotion converted to a hybrid and running on SVO, myself - renewable fuel, incredible mileage, and who gives a shit if it does 0-60 in 14 seconds anyway ?

I was lookin at the Toyota Vitz, badged here as the Yaris, recently, but the damn thing costs $13K BEFORE you add in the markups and mandatory options, so real base price is more like $16K , it's too fuckin heavy for a subcompact(1), and why in holy hell does it need an engine that big anyways ?
Piss poor mileage for what it is, too.

(1) Loading more and more and more weight onto a frame via "safety" options is, IMHO, a fools bargain, a light, nimble car can AVOID an accident, that being the better premise, and no amount of additional stuff is gonna break the laws of physics for you when a semi driven by someone half asleep and stoned on meth plows into your little econobox...
But if it NEVER HITS YOU, cause your car was light and agile enough to get the fuck out of the way, that ain't a problem, is it now ?
