Hello,

It seems a website that seeks to parody/protest against Santorum has become more popular than the politician's own website. Now he wants the results cleaned up so that there is no prominent smear on his name. Such a demand is just one more reason not to elect this person. We should not vote for someone who would suppress free speech and attempt to clean up the internet to serve his own end.

America loves a winner!

Is asking Google to amend its results in any way an affront to free speech?

I was unaware that Google is a branch of the government now.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Google is reflecting the most popular search, a service its users desire. Now a political figure is asking the search results to be altered to bury this content and make it less visible. If he believes that this is appropriate and proper, one may reasonably be concerned about how he might want to reshuffle, organize, or partition away speech that he finds unacceptable should he obtain greater power and authority.

It's especially telling that this particular speech came about as a criticism of his policies. Hiding it would be no different from designating a free speech zone where the public is less likely to see an unsightly protest. In short, his strong desire to do so is a big red flag to anyone who values free speech.

Santorum is just not Presidential material. He comes across as a bit too wired up to his stringent and narrow beliefs. He needs seasoning and valium.

Of course asking them to change is an affront to free speech, that shouldn't even be a question. However,
Quote:

In December 2009, when racist images of first lady Michelle Obama popped to the top of Google search results, the company took a similar free-speech stance.

"We have a bias toward free expression," Google spokesman Scott Rubin said at the time. "That means that some ugly things will show up."

Still, Google has removed offensive content from searches, usually by making changes to how its overall search equations function.

In 2007, for example, a change to Google's search algorithm stopped the search term "miserable failure" from directing Internet users to pages about former president George W. Bush

Note they did NOT change anything for racist images of the First Lady, but DID do so for Bush...and it might be noted that the one about Bush ("miserable failure") was on target, while racist images of Mrs. Obama were NOT.

So Santorum's idiocy of
Quote:

On Tuesday, the socially conservative politician lashed out at Google, saying the company could get rid of the sexual references to his name on the search results if it wanted to -- and perhaps would do so if he were a Democrat.
"I suspect if something was up there like that about Joe Biden, they'd get rid of it," he told Politico. "If you're a responsible business, you don't let things like that happen in your business that have an impact on the country."

shows just how biased and assinine he is.

Maybe if he hadn't equated homosexuality to pedophilia and bestiality, he wouldn't have had this problem. He kinda brought it on himself...anyone can put up anything on the internet; it's popularity is determined by The People, right? His expecting special treatment says a lot.

It's amusing; via "Go", the first hits I get are

The obscene definition
A Wikipedia article ON the obscene definition
A Wikipedia article on Rick Santorum
An article about how Rick Santorum's usual supporters aren't donating as much to him
An article on Santorum's argument with Google about all this
THEN Rick Santorum's actual website

Gee, poor guy, his trying to get it off the internet and the issue itself are apparently much more popular than he is!

Using Google, his campaign website is 22nd, after numerous stories such as the above. On both, however, the "news" of Santorum is the very first hit, about his remarks regarding the gay soldier being booed, blasting Perry on immigration, and other stuff regarding the debate.

The People Have Spoken. I almost feel sorry for the poor guy. Almost!

To clarify, that quote should be attributed to Santorum, not Niki.

Let's see, an obscene sexual metaphor for Biden?
Well, he has been accused of being wooden. "I woke up with morning Biden today." ? Don't think it'll catch on.

The quotes I posted came from the original article Anthony put up (which is why I didn't bother putting cites at the end of them). Reading it, I don't see how it could be misunderstood as coming from ME, rather than the original article. So I'm confused...? Or was that a joke...? Just got up, brain is still fuzzy, so maybe I'm missing something...

What I find hilarious is that Santorum thinks what happens to him has "an impact on the country".

No, hon, just that I cut the original piece so much, might not have been clear. That stuff was a quote within a quote, at least, and so not your words, your responsibility. I wanted to be sure to keep the attribution clear.

Apropos of nothing...

The Washington Post has been running the Style Invitational for several years. They provide weekly contests for readers to make humorous responses to challenges.

The one this week was: "Our perennial contest in which we supplied a randomly compiled list of objects and asked you to tell up how any two were different or alike."

The winning response:

"The difference between a toilet brush and a tattoo of Joe Biden: One's a bristly Number Two tool: the other's merely a depiction of one."
