At the big debate tonight, Perry got going about there being 3 Federal agencies he would cut-- the first 2 were Commerce and Education. But then he couldn't remember the 3rd one!!!

Ron Paul jumped in and suggested the EPA, to which Perry agreed. Then later, after he got a hint from his handlers, he corrected himself to the Dept of Energy.

Guy's so dumb-- How dumb was he, Johnny?-- he couldn't even remember 3 points. Lessee, whatta I gotta do tomorrow? Get up, eat breakfast, declare war on who? ANd damn, I fergot to put on my pants...

Vote for him, he won't even remember who he promised what while on the campaign trail. If he backed YOUR issue, or your program, how can you be even a tiny bit sure he'll EVEN REMEMBER. His handlers will be running the country one day after the Inauguration.

Maybe he needs a good VP- Cheney is available, and experienced.

"But then he couldn't remember the 3rd one!!!"

OOOOOPS!

Kind of a while ago I predicted Perry was going to be the R nominee. On paper he has all the right credentials. But I didn't give much credit to what I heard, which was that people who know him IRL say he's pretty dumb (that was the word they used to describe him, and I quote - 'dumb').

So, after seeing some RL Perry, now I'm left wondering, how the HELL did he ever wind up governor of Texas? For so long? And Texas voters - what are they thinkin'?

There are precious few articulate, intelligent politicians on either side of the political divide. But it seems to me, and maybe I'm prejudiced, that there are even fewer on the right side.

Who cares about presidential candidates anyway? Haven't we seen from the past few elections that there is no change in the system, no matter who is President?

Perry's over. His performance last night handed the Obama campaign the ultimate "It's 3am..." commercial.

Let's see... It's 3am. The phone rings; Perry answers it. "Ummmmm... Uhhhhhh... It's... ummmmm... I... can't... uhhhh... oops."

Meanwhile, Obama answers the phone and gives clear instructions: "Take out those pirates. Kill Bin Laden. Oust Khaddafi."

And really - Perry forgot that he wants to do away with THE ENERGY DEPARTMENT?! He's the governor of Texas, goes on and on about our oil and natural gas, but forgot that he hates the Department of Energy?

That's something beyond dumb.

I know how Perry got to be Governor (he took over for Dubya), but I've never understood how anyone could vote for him.

I'm no Perry fan, but he's been a fine Governor. I never supported his running for President.

This was not a "look at how stupid he is" moment. This is a "feel sorry because he just screwed up so big he can't recover moment".

Its like watching an champion caliber ice-skater fall during the Olympics or a top Quarterback throw five interceptions in the Super Bowl. I don't care what party someone is...I just hate to see someone go out like that. Ok, Perry was never champion caliber. so maybe its more like watching someone blow their one big chance on American Idol by forgetting the words to the song.

What happened to Perry is not uncommon, its happened to everyone at some point (except Barrack Obama...teleprompters).

The fact that you equate running for president with performing on American Idol... is very insightful.

Perry is dumb because he didn't write those 3 things down on his hand! - didn't Palin teach the Reps anything??

I kind of agree, it was embarrassing to watch, and I find it hard to believe he's THAT dumb...I can't help wondering about imbibing things. But then, watching it he didn't look drunk, he looked totally lost. I can't help feeling sorry for the guy--I haven't taken him seriously for quite a while anyway, so it didn't really mean anything to me, just sad to watch.

I think more important to me was Cain's statement about his current "problems"--tho' I don't take him seriously either anymore, the crowd reaction made my stomach turn. These people really ARE that stupid, aren't they?

They're saying "watch out for Newt" now...why can't these people make up their MINDS?!? Yeah, so Romney's the Great White Nope, but it sure seems stupid for them to keep swinging back and forth again and again rather than accept him. Doesn't show a particular overabundance of brains.

And this year at least, yes, I DO think the Repubs have put up a slate of pretty dumb candidates. Actually, going back the same is true last time around--not with McCain (who I think is fairly smart, IF a sell-out), but, I mean, PALIN? The only valid excuse for her was to put an unknown and a woman on the ticket. Which is also pretty stupid...

One of my favorite political theories is that Vice Presidents are nebbishes. They are chosen to
balance the ticket or to bring in One more state on Election Day. I wish I could attribute THAT Idea-- it's not mine, belongs to some prof or writer who influenced me. Historically it's self-evident.

Over 200 plus years, a handful have done more than be chairman pro tem of the Senate: a few have had to perform their function as a spare tire. Most of those, who have has greatness handed to them, have managed to step up and perform well. Not all.But most VP's have been forgettable.

And what does this have to do with Rick Perry?

Well, Bush 41 was a VP before. and so was a forgettable President. Haven't heard any Repubs mention his name in a long time.

The son of a nebbish is gonna be a nebbish too. That explains Bush 43-- everybody says Jeb is the smart one.

So Perry was the vice governor of a son of a nebbish. So he started out pretty far down the food chain.

There must not have been a lot of competition for a low-esteem job like that, so he got it handed to him.

At least he can make fun of himself:
Quote:

After his infamous "brain freeze" that drew laughter and ridicule from his detractors, Texas Gov. Rick Perry poked fun at himself Thursday night while delivering the "Top Ten" list on CBS' "The Late Show with David Letterman."

Perry sauntered on stage smiling, clapped his hands and saluted the crowd before rattling off the "Top Ten Rick Perry Excuses." Among them:

No. 6: "You try concentrating with Mitt Romney smiling at you. That is one handsome dude!"

No. 5: "Uh, El Nino?"

No. 4: "I had a 5-hour Energy drink six hours before the debate."

No. 2: "I wanted to help take the heat off my buddy Herman Cain."

No. 1: "I just learned Justin Bieber is my father."

The morning after the debacle, Perry said his "brain freeze" showed he is not "the slickest politician" among the field of Republican presidential hopefuls.

His campaign, meanwhile, sought to raise funds off the gaffe, encouraging supporters to send $5 for every government agency they "would like to forget."

Operatives from the left and the right slammed the moment as a potential sign of Perry's campaign imploding. The New York Times quoted Mark McKinnon, an aide to former President George W. Bush, as calling the moment the "human equivalent of shuttle Challenger."

Speaking to CNN's Christine Romans on Thursday, Perry said, "we need substance more than we need style" and tried to turn the incident into an attack on President Barack Obama.

When Romans said that the president has to be "debater in chief," Perry responded, "We've got a debater in chief right now. And you've got to ask yourself: How's that working out for America?"

His campaign sent out a note to supporters saying, "We've all had human moments."

The note from "Team Perry" points out that Obama, at a campaign stop during the 2008 election, referred to having visited "57 states."

"Ronald Reagan got lost somewhere on the Pacific Highway in an answer to a debate question," the note adds. "Gerald Ford ate a tamale without removing the husk. And tonight Rick Perry forgot the third agency he wants to eliminate. Just goes to show there are too damn many federal agencies." http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/11/politics/perry-gaffe/index.html?hpt=hp_b

While I can fully understand and empathize with that sentiment, there's no way I could do that to my country.

No need to get him out of Texas; he's done here, too. Even his supporters are embarrassed to be seen with him at this point.

Ooops...I posted this in response to Kiki's post, the other two came along as I was typing. So Kiki:

Was there really? Yes, there was less OVERT change from Clinton to Bush, but how much REAL difference was there? Bush II definitely overreached...but his overreaching where power is concerned hasn't gone away, has it? Things have been put in place which have made the government's power stronger--they're still there. The wealth gap has been growing for a very long time--it just took a bigger leap under Bush. Taxes on corporations and the uber-wealthy have been going down for how many decades now? (ETA Thank you Sig...those were specifics making the point I was trying to.)

The way I'm seeing it now, what we're suffering from these days has taken a long, long time to happen, and there hasn't been a President or Congress which has stopped it in my memory--slowed it sometimes, but not stopped or reversed the trends. Look at all the things that have gone wrong with this country...when did they start, can you pin-point a specific President under which they began? Yeah, Reagan is one place to KIND OF start, but like Bush II, to me he was just an over-achiever, someone who came along who was charismatic enough to make big steps rather than small ones. Then pendulum has been swinging right, then more right, then less right, and again more right, for a very long time, and the "more right" seems to have been growing exponentially since Bush II.

I dunno, I don't think I'm convinced there's all that much difference...maybe more like a stone rolling down a hill and gaining momentum as it rolls.

And yes, Mike; it was a tweeted funny, nothing more, you know that. I'll be happy to see Perry lose power in Texas if that's so, but given your history down there, I can't help fearing for who's NEXT!

Oh, Perry should have done what Bush did... put a receiver-transmitter between his shoulder blades and a wire in his ear, and have people feed him the answers!

I will never forget Bush II during one of his debates snarling (to no one in sight) Let me finish! Just talking to the voices in his head, eh?

Nonetheless, there is prolly about 15% of the population who identifies with Perry's performance and finds it humanizing... maybe even endearing. This nation has never been big on intellectualism.

Obama has definitely delivered less than promised. But even though McCain is only a theoretical future, I think he would have been worse. He would have been the vindication of the people who ran Bush II - imagine the Bush II administration on a 'roid rage.

"Taxes on corporations and the uber-wealthy have been going down for how many decades now?"

They went up under Clinton. It was Bush II who brought them down.

This isn't to say that BIG MONEY (in caps and bold) hasn't got a significant hold on our government. But when you make too broad generalizations you lose important distinctions. Gabrielle Giffords is not Michele Bachmann. Bernie Sanders is not Joe Lieberman.

So the idea is to vote and keep on voting in the direction you want to go.

Otherwise, sometimes you get small differences, sometimes you get large leaps. I'll take whatever is available, as long as I keep going the way I want.
