"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Quote:

One former banker for Chase — James Theckston — told the New York Times’ Nick Kristof that not only did his bank push minority borrowers into higher-priced loans, but senior executives then tried to cover up the racial disparity in their banks’ lending:
One memory particularly troubles Theckston. He says that some account executives earned a commission seven times higher from subprime loans, rather than prime mortgages. So they looked for less savvy borrowers — those with less education, without previous mortgage experience, or without fluent English — and nudged them toward subprime loans.

These less savvy borrowers were disproportionately blacks and Latinos, he said, and they ended up paying a higher rate so that they were more likely to lose their homes. Senior executives seemed aware of this racial mismatch, he recalled, and frantically tried to cover it up.

“The bigwigs of the corporations knew this, but they figured we’re going to make billions out of it, so who cares? The government is going to bail us out. And the problem loans will be out of here, maybe even overseas,” Theckston explained.

In other words, the bankers are saying "As long as I get mine, then fuck the taxpayers!"

Only this isn't fifteen kids - it's trillions of dollars. It's the country's economy, and most of the world's as well.

But some here say those bailouts were a good idea...

DREAMTROVE

So true. Of course, there's another side to this one, it's call "too big to fail." No one *had* to then go and hand the guy trillions of dollars, but the govt. did it anyway. And yeah, they knew what was going on, everyone knew what was going on. I knew subprime meant black back when they started it, and they didn't hide it, they marketed it at black people, happy blacks with their new home GWChimp with his "More americans own homes than ever before!" boast. Yeah, whatever.

Just out of curiosity, how did they think they were going to "cover it up"?

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

Y'know, I'm not sure they ever really intended to "cover up" that they were pushing minorities into subprimes regardless of whether that was an appropriate loan for them or not - they just figured that if the industry average is, say (for example only, not real figures), 35% subprimes and 65% primes, then they would make sure to hew close to that average. In other words, if 99% of people applying happened to qualify for prime loans, you could still shift 34% of them into subprimes and nobody would really bat an eye, because you were right at the average.

Does that make sense? It's an oversimplification, of course, but just goes to show how easy it is to fudge the stats - any time your numbers don't line up with statistical norms, just massage them until they do, and nobody the wiser.

And of course, once it all went tits-up, who cares? These loans were then going to be the property of some foreign entity or government, or they were going to be Freddie & Fannie's problems - and as a bonus, the GOP would then get to blame them for the whole mess in its entirety!
