STANTON, Mich. (The Daily News of Greenville)- The United States is fighting terrorism - one snow cone at a time.

Montcalm County recently received a $900 Arctic Blast Sno-Cone machine.

The West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission (WMSRDC) is a federal- and state-designated agency responsible for managing and administrating the homeland security program in Montcalm County and 12 other counties.

The WMSRDC recently purchased and transferred homeland security equipment to these counties - including 13 snow cone machines at a total cost of $11,700.

It's an excellent use of the money. Considering that it's war on terror money that would be otherwise used to oppress the rights of decent hardworking americans, and also of some ignorant lazy futhermuckers, I'm glad the money is being derailed to a useful place: Sno-cones.

I'd rather not spend the money at all, but if they're gonna shovel pork barrel into this crap, much better they blow it on stuff like this...

Of course, "west michigan" also includes that loonytunes ultra-rightwing cult out in Holland which Dick Devos, Erik Prince, and a lot of other freakin weirdos are part of, and the notion of THEM having wartoys at their disposal, as if Prince didn't have enough already...

Believe me, I'll TAKE the goddamn sno-cones.

They say it is to attract people to educate them about homeland security. AND the ice is useful in emergencies.

Frem, is there a shortage of ice in Michigan right about this time of year? ;)

" They say... "

Of course " they " are going to come up w/ some lame as hell excuse to justify 'ice shaving machines' as a legitimate expense.

I wonder if he did this interview over the phone , or in person. Harder to hide the eye rolls and smirks when you're face to face.

And yes, I'd rather the cops have snow cone machines than more milspec equipment.

Either they double down by playing the "doesn't apply to us" card; and get hammered for social classism, or they fold and stop pickin on the kids.

So it's win-win either way.

According to Arlo Guthrie, there's a third option that you might not have counted upon - you could be arrested. The catch-all "disorderly conduct" charge would probably be sufficient for them to get you out of the area for the day, and charges would be dropped before the court date arrived, I'm sure. (Yes, I've been to this particular rodea a time or seven. )

I think they are way beyond caring about being seen as classist.

But good article and website.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Thank you Raptor...first giggle of the day award goes to you. The article is even funnier:
Quote:

The Michigan Homeland Security Grant Program’s Allowable Cost Justification document, dated May 9, 2011, says the snow cone machines can make ice to prevent heat-related illnesses during emergencies, treat injuries and provide snow cones as an outreach at promotional events.

WMSRDC Executive Director Sandeep Dey said one county requested a popcorn machine, but that request was denied.
.....
“I don’t like the term snow cone machine, because it sounds horrible,” Feldpausch said. “When you look at it as an ice shaving machine and its purpose, it makes a little more sense. I assume it will get used in Montcalm County a lot more in the summertime by the Fire Corps.”

Amazing how they'll try to justify their idiocy, isn't it??

At the same time, if you look at the full story, on the same web page are three others:
Quote:

The Montcalm County Board of Commissioners is reconsidering operating Animal Control with only two officers. Former Animal Control Director Patricia Lentz’s position was eliminated Sept. 26 as part of $1.3 million in county budget cuts.
Quote:

The Montcalm County Board of Commissioners had a change of heart Monday, giving Yvonne Niswonger her job back in the Equalization Department – at least temporarily. Niswonger was laid off Sept. 26 as part of $1.3 million in Montcalm County budget cuts.
and the third entitled
Quote:

Financial fallout hits Montcalm County departments
I just found the juxtaposition with "Montcalm County is now in possession of a $900 Arctic Blast Sno-Cone machine, thanks to a grant from the Michigan Homeland Security Program" interesting... sno-cone machine while layoffs abound... ain't it great?

Feh, we've had this conversation last time I was down at the courthouse(1), me and them - they're of the notion that I pretty much AM "disorderly conduct" personified and they could prettymuch hit me with that one any time I'm off duty, at which point I asked who'd draw the short straw since I have a really evil lawyer, and firmly believe in the right to "resist" a bogus arrest...

They looked at each other for this long moment, and one of em offered "hey, fuck you" along with ye olde digitus impudicus.
See, the guys at the courthouse are the ones the local PD took OFF the beat since they couldn't be trusted not to beat people half to death for not being WASPs - real professionals, yanno ?

Honestly I doubt they'd be stupid enough to try it given the inevitable fallout which'd immediately result, as we've resorted to hacking at their budget everytime they screw up - they might not have any real loyalty to anyone but themselves, but when their paycheck and employment is on the line they toe the line pretty quick.

(1) Speakin of, the local court sent me a check oddly enough, with "gas money" pencilled in the memo section - guess they got sick of me bitchin about being dragged down there to turn in invalid jury duty notices...

Y'know, in some jurisdictions, that can be an arrestable offense, categorized under "assault". At least, that's what the cops say when you do it to THEM. Just another of the long list of rules they say don't apply to them, I s'pose...

BTW, if I haven't said it lately, I'll say it now: THANK YOU, FREM - for giving 'em hell, for putting the hellcamps on the endangered species list, heading for extinction, and just for doing all you do in the name of REAL freedom!

PS: *TRY* to refrain from using that "gas money" to make a bunch of Molotov cocktails to send back to the courthouse!

Oh you know me too well, Mikey...
But I wouldn't do that, it's a perfectly good building paid for with our money, why waste it - besides which, there's at least one relatively honest judge in there, much to my stunned disbelief, and other than the courthouse trolls the rest of the local department has really turned it around in regards to professional standards aside from being a mite too greedy over traffic fines.

I *did* get a ticket for flipping a cop the bird back in Baltimore, but it wasn't flippin the bird which did it, it was poppin a wheelie and taking one hand off the handlebars to do it, which netted me "improper operation of a motor vehicle" - not blatantly unfair that, as it was a somewhat dangerous trick.
