This is the dumbest thing I've read in a while...In what world does spanking a six year old have anything to do with them participating in a riot as a teenager?? In my experience spanking a kid makes them internally more defiant then anything.

You could try sitting your kid down and asking them why they are committing bad behaviors and what they feel, but I guess treating kids with a little decency requires tooo much in the way of parenting skills...

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I suspect spanking effects different children differently. I have wondered if it depends on how and why the spanking is administered.

I have noticed some people become more sadistic as the result of spankings and others become less. Some more compliant, some less. Some carry on the tradition of spanking, others abhor it.

It's almost as though human beings are complex creatures with manifold motivations, and singular factors are only one tumbler in the locks of our souls.

America loves a winner!

Hey, it's not just spanking. Little ones learn from us at an early age, and it carries over into their adult life...

FREMDFIRMA

It's beyond stupid and straight into evil.

The black-pedagogy force-resistance-more-force model is entirely and predictably destructive - something folks have been well aware of since the mid 1700's at least as far as the literature I have on the matter.

It produces, inevitably, Authoritarian Psychopaths, which go on to create more while spewing hate, intolerance and destruction everywhere they go.

If you wanna really put an end to evil, strike at the root, don't hack the branches, and when you teach children violence instead of reason, hate instead of love, that might makes right...
Look at the horrors all around you, where do you think they come from ?
Quote:

Child Mistreatment, Child Abuse
What is it?

Humiliations, spankings and beatings, slaps in the face, betrayal, sexual exploitation, derision, neglect, etc. are all forms of mistreatment, because they injure the integrity and dignity of a child, even if their consequences are not visible right away. However, as adults, most abused children will suffer, and let others suffer, from these injuries. This dynamic of violence can deform some victims into hangmen who take revenge even on whole nations and become willing executors to dictators as unutterably appalling as Hitler and other cruel leaders. Beaten children very early on assimilate the violence they endured, which they may glorify and apply later as parents, in believing that they deserved the punishment and were beaten out of love. They don't know that the only reason for the punishments they have ( or in retrospect, had) to endure is the fact that their parents themselves endured and learned violence without being able to question it. Later, the adults, once abused children, beat their own children and often feel grateful to their parents who mistreated them when they were small and defenseless.

This is why society's ignorance remains so immovable and parents continue to produce severe pain and destructivity - in all "good will", in every generation. Most people tolerate this blindly because the origins of human violence in childhood have been and are still being ignored worldwide. Almost all small children are smacked during the first three years of life when they begin to walk and to touch objects which may not be touched. This happens at exactly the time when the human brain builds up its structure and should thus learn kindness, truthfulness, and love but never, never cruelty and lies. Fortunately, there are many mistreated children who find "helping witnesses" and can feel loved by them.

MAGONSDAUGHTER

Sorry Wish, I struggle with anything published in the Daily Mail. Bit of a stupid rag for stupid people, no offence meant to you of course.

Spanking - which is a polite way of saying hitting - does not equate to having boundaries with your children. In fact, parents who hit are more likely to have lost control and may be struggling to manage their kids behaviour without resorting to threats and violence.

I'm not wanting to judge parents who have smacked or smack their children. Parenting is a tough gig and we often do it in isolation and in a society which kind of advocates consequence free lifestyle choices. I just don't think you should plan to do it or defend a parents 'right' to do it. Find another way.

Heh. Rappy got it. I LOVE that commercial...

I have noticed there are some kids who don't seem to feel a spanking and wouldn't take it personal anyway, but I still think there's got to be a better way. Punishments should be personalized, but I think spanking should be a last resort- not the first response...

And yeah, I know Daily Mail is sensationalistic and overinflated, and to be taken with not just a grain of salt but the whole block, but there is usually a small piece of information under it if you know where to look. I don't know WHAT they were thinking with this bit.

Where do you look, Mags? Got a better place for info? I like to read the stories about people too, btw, it gives a perspective, and I am always fascinated by perspective...
