Hello,

The HBO series 'Luck' has been cancelled, and HBO has cited horse deaths as the reason for the cancellation.

In actuality, I think the series was getting much softer viewership and enthusiasm than they'd have liked. For my own part, I've been watching the show but have also been wishing for much more action. The series has a slow pace and it feels slow.

Contrast this to other HBO shows like Deadwood, Rome, or Game of Thrones, and you'll see that these other shows seem to make a point of usually having at least one moment of action per episode in order to balance the drama and intrigue.

Luck is a show featuring multiple crime bosses vying for power and revenge, centering around the activity of a race track and (future) casino. Somehow, they manage to have this highly charged potential focus while very little actually happens. The message may be, "Even crime bosses have dull lives punctuated with brief instants of aggression" but that doesn't make for an interesting show.

Between 'John from Cincinatti' and 'Luck,' I hope HBO has finally realized what makes good television. I want more Deadwood, Rome, and Thrones and less... this.

What do you think of Luck, and the reason for its cancellation? Do you think it was really the horses, or something else?

Never forget what this man is. You keep forgiving him his trespasses and speak to him as though he is a reasonable human being. You keep forgetting the things he's advocated. If you respond to this man again, you are being foolish.

Haven't seen it, but I saw some publicity on it-- Sounded like a very interesting, character driven piece, with a LOT of very talented actors in it. I mean, c'mon, Dustin Hoffman? On TV? Even cable? But it did sound short on action.

How has it been doing, ratings-wise?

And I saw the story yesterday morning-- this was the 3rd horse that's died on the show. That's too many to be just freak accidents, there must have been something going on. It's good that they cancelled it-- how long would it have been before they had the AHA and PETA all over themselves? The publicity NOW will be bad enough-- if those folks got involved, it would be a hurricane, tsunami, earthquake, and 9-alarm fire all at once.

Definitely a smoke screen. Addressing the loss of viewers or not having this kind of out would be dangerously close to saying, "Hoffman and Nolte and our producers failed across the board." You don't suppose... they actually offed some horses to have a back door? I'm kidding... mostly... tv movie of the week stuff.

It was real bad imho, we dropped it after the opening show, when it came up again in the play list we both just said, "pass."
There were lots of problems. One of the biggest was I simply could not understand the dialogue in too many places. Some of that was just bad writing (lines did not follow logically), some of it was not knowing the relationships, some of it was simply bad audio. I thought I was losing my hearing at times - we'd back up the dvr and play dialogue several times... "yeah, pretty sure he said, 'the usual, but not for Jim.' I think."
Also, too many instances of being dropped into the middle of a subplot and expected to just wait for clarity in a future episode.
And I didn't buy Hoffman and Farina. Just didn't work for me. So yeah, lots of issues for me.

Game of Thrones on the other hand... can't wait...

Don't know anything about the show or their reasons for cancellation. But on the point of Hoffman, I've personally been kind of sad to see a whole SLEW of good movie/stage actors show up in series on TV. Maybe it's just about a paycheck, or there not being enough good movies being made or something, but I'm sad to see it nonetheless.

I don't know why horses would die as a result of filming a TV series, and I admit that puzzles me.
