Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Okay, so I can't resist; I'm sure it doesn't belong here, but after so few decent sequels, I was exited to read this (the whole thing can be found at http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/25/showbiz/movies/men-in-black-3-review-ew/
index.html?hpt=hp_bn9

But most of all, "MIB3" is one giant leap for mankind because Josh Brolin shows up to play the younger Agent K. And he just nails the feat, triumphantly creating a riff on/homage to the Tommy Lee Jones-ness of K that goes much deeper (and funnier) than a simple imitation of drawl and speech patterns. Brolin conjures up a man in full, just as taciturn but not nearly as closed as the craggy puss he is when Jones does the squinting.

It's a great performance, one for the thespian yearbook. And, as happens in the best of cases, Brolin raises his costar's game. For an African-American Hollywood superstar like Smith, marching his character backwards to 1969 presents unique opportunities for social commentary on changing perceptions of American black men. Smith makes big statements with the most casual and charming of reactions and line readings.

Sonnenfeld and Cohen move their baby along with an integrity and gait that ought to serve as a blueprint for other filmmakers faced with the particular challenges of reviving big-ticket and time-dated hunks of pop culture. Amid the mayhem, the movie is sophisticated enough to note the family resemblance between Rick Baker-stitched aliens and the human creatures who populated Andy Warhol's Factory in the downtown Manhattan of 1969.

And even while Brolin's K is embroiled in a high-tension climactic showdown with Boris -- at Cape Canaveral, on the day the Apollo 11 crew blasted off for the moon -- there's air and space enough in the movie to evoke the real awe of that day, that time. The film isn't afraid of emotional truth. Which is why, in the end, "Men in Black 3" would be nothing without the participation of the alien called Griffin.

Played with melting sweetness by the wonderful Michael Stuhlbarg, Griffin has the gift -- and curse -- of seeing the future, or, more specifically, seeing multiple, equally possible futures, some swell and some less so. Griffin's eyes are a misty blue, and he wears a little wool hat and a perpetual worried smile. He's gentle and patient and he wishes the best for humankind, but he can't guarantee it. Likewise, there was no guarantee that after so long an absence, there would be anything fresh to say about "Men in Black." Yet behold, it is good. A-

Damn. Now I'll have to wait forever for it to come around on Xfinity or Netflix. I don't much like Brolin, but hey, if he did a good job, kudos! Soooo tempting to actually pop for a ticket to see it in theaters...how much does a bargain matinee run these days, I wonder?

Hello,

I thought Brolin did a good job in True Grit. You could see the gears turning (slowly) in his character's head. It was a good performance.

Of course, that movie had nothing but good performances.

Austin Chronicle savaged MIB3, giving it 1.5 out of 5 stars. They rated it the same as Battleship, which they called "crass and hugely dumb".

Since I wasn't impressed with the first two, I can see no reason to invest my time in this outing.

WHOZIT

It's going to make around $75 million this weekend, if it's as awfull as the critics say then there should be a huge drop off next weekend. Even tho it's #1 this weekend it'll only make a 1/3 what "Avengers" made it's 1st week out. I was looking forward to this flick but if it's as bad as they say I'll wait for it to come to TV, atleast I've got "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Killer" with Alan Tyduk in it coming soon.

I saw it last night, and reviewed it on the main page. Wait for the Dvd.
Josh was Ok, as good as anyone could do Tommy Lee, and Griff was interesting, but the storyline was just soooo contrived.

Well, that's depressing. I was really looking forward to a decent movie for a change. I only saw that one review; guess I should look for others. Pfffft...sick to death of "If it works once, do it over, and over and OVER again!"

True Grit, 2010 version

I was raised on western movies, which, when they began to take themselves more
seriously, portrayed men of action but few words. (Speechifyin', necessary to
inform me the audience, was given to non-action characters.)

At the same time, if I read books written in the 19th century, many folks were
given long, flowery speeches. A custom of the day, I believe. No TV, books were
scarce and precious on the frontier ... people entertained themselves and others
by talking.

I admired the authenticity of the flowery speech. Yet I did not enjoy it.

I lasted half an hour or so trying to get into it, failed. Crabby. I didn't like
any of the characters, turned it off.

It probably was a good movie. But it missed me.

MIB3: I mean to enjoy it, no matter what. But before that, The Avengers!!

Not a True Grit fan...saw the original, that was enough for me. (I'm a Austinophile, so the flowery speeches are fine by me!). I'm not a Brolin fan, so wouldn't choose a movie 'cuz he's in it.

I checked yesterday, and there are reviews on both sides, but more positive ones than negative, so we'll see. A lot of them said it was better than MIB2, which I enjoyed (yeah, so I'm easy...). My expectations aren't THAT high anyway, it's just a Summer escapist movie. But I'm a big Tommy Lee Jones fan (tho' I gather he won't be in it much) and Will Smith as well. Pretty close to end of the month; I'm pretty broke, so probably won't pop for it and will wait, like I do with everything else. Only one I've regretted in the recent past was Avatar; once I saw it, I wished I'd seen it in the theaters. Last movie I saw in the theater was 2010, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It really wasn't bad, but I don't see it ever being on my favorites list. It was better then MIB2, but I didn't care for MIB2 much(there were alot of annoying parts)-so that's not saying a whole lot...

I gave it a B+, and how I rate that is A-LOVE to watch it again, B-might watch it again C-if it ends up on TV I'll watch it if there is nothing else on D-only if I'm forced and F- forgeddabout it!
