There's Mitt Romney, in a great snapshot captured by AP reporter Steve Peoples, with Donald Trump's plane over his shoulder.

It is, perhaps, symbolic of Trump's place in the Romney campaign for at least the near future.

On Monday, Mitt Romney refused to denounce the support of Donald Trump, with whom he is hosting a fundraiser in Las Vegas tonight. This, despite Trump's status as "birther-in-chief," a term coined for his lead on the front of conspiracy theories about President Barack Obama's birthplace.

Today, rewarding Romney's support, Trump went birther tirades on CNBC and on his own personal Twitter account.

“I never really changed — nothing’s changed my mind,” Trump said on CNBC of his commitment to questioning Barack Obama's birthplace. “And by the way, you know, you have a huge group of people. I walk down the street and people are screaming, ‘Please don’t give that up.’"

How much longer can Romney go without distancing himself from this charade? Either way, he has backed himself into a losing corner. On one hand, the Trump mess detracts from the "real issues" that both sides have been pledging to talk about more. On the other, if Romney disavows Trump's support now, it's a loss in money, and another media-led charade for a few days. http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-mitt-romney-fundraiser-bir

This is someone you guys want for President; a guy so cowardly he won't call out the wackiest supporter he's got who goes on delusional rants? He knows, of course, that it's a dog whistle to the crazier elements of his base, and what does THAT say about a potential President, too? Why would any serious candidate align himself with this deluded fanatic?

The man is a patent idiot, riding whatever wave of attention he can garner; why doesn't Romney say ANYTHING to him? It's not as if The Donald has or can contribute to his campign. It's pure political shikanery, and we all know it.

Saw a political commentary or comic strip yesterday: Candidate is saying, in 2012, " I'll run against Obama on the basis of his birth certificate, my heroism in the Air Force, and my status as an ex-POW." Cheap shot at McCain, maybe, but it worked so well in 2008, didn't it? Let's keep on doin' it. Good luck, fellers. Carry on, waste your time and money on something that didn't even work last time.

Pardon me, I got it close but not exactly right.
from Lalo Alcaraz' comic strip, La Cucaracha, May 29, 2012:

"He can beat Obama if he associates him with Reverend Wright, and touts his service in Vietnam plus his record as Arizona's senator."

Same point, slightly different words.

Why won't Romney show his birth certificate?!

Yes, that's a joke. I realize he released a "birth certificate" already, but that hasn't stopped anyone from using the same line on Obama...

Romney's an "anchor baby", by the way.

Trump sickens me. What sickens me more is someone who wants to be President using this "bloviated" asshole to spread a dog whistle to the worst members of his party.

Heard Trump saying, with regards to the newspaper notice of Obama's birth, that "lots of people do that". More bullshit, as the birth announcements come directly from the hospital and health services.

The former Director of the Hawaii Department of Health has a very mellow attitude about all this crap which I like. Asked about whether it bothers her or not, she says she finds it amusing that it keeps coming up. She says it "Tells us that the whole conspiracy notion out there, that if there's an issue that needs to have a following, it will find one". She's cute.

That about sums it up, but it's the WAY it's being used that angers me most. Coming next, Reverend Wright--of course Romney will say he can't stop his supporters from believing what they will, which will allow THAT to be a safe dog whistle for him, too.

Trump isn't just a "supporter", he's an integral part of the Romney machine now, so allowing him to do this crap is, to me, shameful to an amazing degree.

Can you show me one Romney voter who has jumped off the Romney bandwagon because of Trump? How is Trump worse than Jon Corzine?

Corzine, who the MSM in typical "suck Obama's dick" mode, have been studiously ignoring, is one of Obama's biggest campaign bundlers. Obama gave back Corzine's money, but kept the money his fundraising donated. Now Corzine has cost 3,200 people their jobs, but Trump keeps doing business and putting people to work. Maybe it's Corzine, not Trump whose tag line should be "You're Fired!"

And Trump has yet to produce a single verifiable instance of that ever happening, even though "lots of people do that."

Trump still won't show his birth certificate OR his tax returns, Romney's shown one year of tax returns and refuses to release any more, he also won't release his college transcripts, and he's only released an easily-faked copy of a short-form birth certificate, and refuses to release the long form.

What we do know about Romney is that his father wasn't American, he follows a weird cult religion, he was an "anchor baby", and Trump has no problem with any of that. Oh, and Romney just happens to be whiter than white, which probably has nothing to do with Trump's acceptance of him...
