So, here's what I wonder. Is Mitt doing what most reasonable people would do in this situation, which is hunching up with a hand over their face muttering: "I'm such a fucking moron. I really screwed this up. Gotta do better next time..." Or is he continuing to prance about with a smug smile of self-satisfaction, completely unaware as he brags: "I rock! I'm the best! What British news headlines? What America headlines? I'm a bazillionaire! I'm the Romnster! I can do no wrong!"

From what I've seen of this man in the past year, I'm guessing the latter. I think Mitt manages to isolate himself (with plenty of help from his yes-men and clingers-on) from anything negative or even self-judgmental. Which would explain how he does stupid shit like this in the first place.

I mean really. He wants to be a politician, and he's this clueless? Yikes!

You know what I find strangest about all of this? The SPIN! Romney said "You know, it's hard to know just how well it will turn out," he said. "There are a few things that were disconcerting, the stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials. That obviously is not something which is encouraging." There's nothing false in that, those things HAVE happened and have been in the news. It's maybe not as diplomatic as one might hope, but there's nothing false--nor particularly negative--about concerns like that. Hell, the Brits have probably been chewing their fingernails to the quick about it themselves.

So the British people get pissed off, snark back, it makes news everywhere over here, and it's a whole big deal. He didn't apologize, that's true, but he went on to say all kinds of good things every chance he got, including:
Quote:

"When the games themselves begin and the athletes take over, all of the mistakes that the organizing committee -- and I made a few -- all of those are overwhelmed by the many things that the athletes carry out that capture the spirit of the games," Romney told reporters.

"What I've seen shows imagination and forethought and a lot of organization and expect the games to be highly successful," he added.

Okay, he's still Romney, he still looks and sounds self-satisfied and smug, but that's just Romney...he ALWAYS looks like that!

the whole thing, in my opinion, should have been shuffed off by the PM, saying something like "Yes, we've had our problems--putting together an Olympics always does--but we'll be fine once it gets going". I don't think the PM making a big deal out of it was particularly "diplomatic" either.

Sometimes the media really pisses me off!

I read somewhere that some newspaper wrote "Do we have another Dubya?" Jeezus, one remark and suddenly he's like the guy who invaded a country on lies, roped them into going along, etc., etc. because of one remark!

The guy can't catch a break...in this instance, I think it's totally unfounded and unfair.

As far as I can see, his every move on the compaign has been to galvanize him with a base that is inherently hostile to him (the Mormon thing is a really big deal with the fundies), a base that seems at this point to be so filled with rage that pissing off everyone whom the liberals think one should treat with respect is in Romney's best interest. NAACP? the whole of Britain? Same difference. It's all straight out of the Bush Doctrine.

There is that; that his base was more comfortable with Bush's bullying of other countries, "American exceptionalism", "Freedom Fries" and all that crap. You may be right; offending the Brits might well play with them. Might make them even more defensive of him, being mistreated by "those foreigners". I just don't see him having done it deliberatel, just unthinkingly.

No, he didn't say anything false, but he's supposed to be a POLITICIAN, and show his DIPLOMATIC side. That was the whole point of this trip!

Say someone's throwing a big party and they're a bit nervous about carrying it off, and a good friend gets there a a few minutes early, when it's too late to change anything. All the friend can do is lend moral support. The friend should NOT walk in and say: "This decor looks pretty shabby. Is that all the food you have? And you're serving THOSE drinks? Boy, I'm worried about how this is going to go. I set up my own party MUCH better than this."

No no no! In this situation a good friend talks up the positive, greets people at the door and puts the best face on things. This is basic common sense on how to be sociable. Romney, obviously, has no fucking clue.

Mitt has shown that he is a big FAIL at yet another aspect of the office of POTUS. Really, it's not that I love Obama, because I don't. But Romney is just appalling. I didn't think it could be possible, but he's beginning to lower himself to the level of W. I really see nothing positive about him, which was not true of McCain. I actually didn't mind McCain until the Palin debacle showed him to be somewhat clueless.

Which kind of suggests that maybe one or two brain cells in there knows that he screwed up. He's trying to fix it.

HK, I can see your point that maybe Mitt he doesn't care so much about offending certain people because it is pretty much the GOP way to offend those groups. You know, the not "real Americans." But I really really doubt he wants to do stupid things like this. The demographics of the voting public is too well known. You know Romney has been trying to do the full etch-a-sketch, to make himself look somewhat appealing to the general public. There is no way he set out on this trip with hopes of pissing off all of England. Even if the small racist anglo-phobic heart of the GOP is loving it, that subgroup is not enough to win him the election. He has to be aware of that.

No, I think this man just has diarrhea of the mouth, and he got it by living most of his life in a little bubble where he wasn't held ever accountable for being an asshole.

Which is why I wonder if he *feels* accountable for it now. Is this man capable of realizing what a fool he's making of himself?

Because he didn't kneel down and kiss them in their happy place, he's being painted as a villain?

Beyond ridiculous. Londoners need to grow a pair and go run their games.

No.

He is, much like Shrub, a classic RWA surrounded by yes-men and sycophantic ass-kissers also of the RWA bent in who's eyes he can do no wrong, you and HKC have prettymuch nailed it dead square - remember this is also much of the same cabal who thought sending Bolton to the UN was a good idea, an act which set our relations with EVERY OTHER COUNTRY ON THE PLANET (save one, which I no longer recognize the legitimacy of) back about a century.

And people wonder why I wanna go all Robespierre on the quislings and collaborators who enable these scumbags and loft them into positions of power....

Okay, I see the argument against his having done it deliberately, and I agree. He's trying to look like a "statesman", so yeah, I doubt he had any intention of looking like a fool instead...he's already got his base and there are better ways to cowtow to them (like remarks about England when he gets home); all this did was make him look worse on foreign affairs, which I'm sure he DOESN'T want. It was just Mitt being Mitt--talking off the top of his head in a way HE thinks is reasonable and right, without realizing how people would take his remarks.

Yes, it's been remarked many times that he doesn't do so well when he goes "off script". The problem is, when he thinks for himself I believe he thinks he IS "on message" a lot of the time, he just doesn't have a SCRIPT all the time. It's that his perspective is SO badly skewed...like saying the cookies didn't look hand made, and how that offended the bakery they'd come from!

I don't think you can "smooth out" someone like Romney. He sees no problem in saying the things he does, because they ARE perfectly reasonable within his "class" and he knows no better. That, and ego gets in the way. He's a pretty bad candidate for national office; he could get away with this stuff if running for a lower office, especially some kind of state office, but the scrutiny on a national candidate makes everything trickier.

It seems to me that his team hasn't been doing really well either, so if he's not getting advice from a savvy team, they're not helping the situation.

Teleprompter wouldn't have helped at the NAACP. I think he said exactly what they planned for him to say. Showing that African-Americans don't like him was, I believe, the purpose. Not so much what he said in England.

Oh, this is certainly a story. And has far wider consequences than you can imagine. Like it or not, GB still has some influence in the world, and being slated by a supposed presidential hopeful will not go down too well AT ALL!!!
My own opinion.....who the HELL is Mitt Romney, and why is he here. And if you are going to elect a leader called MITT or NEWT, do not expect to be taken seriously by ANYBODY, let alone the British.
By the way, the games are going just fine thank you. Not bad for such an incompetent little nation that is so obviously beholden to you, don't you think?

HEY PK! Have I missed you being around, or have you not been around? I've missed your voice mightily--not just 'cuz I like you despite some of our disagreements, but because I treasure ALL voices from outside the State, for reasons I mentioned to Magons.

Interstingly, we had a vacationing Brit show up at our Saturday rally yesterday. He was staying with some Marinites and had their young son with him. Both picked up signs and demostrated with us, and we had some great conversations about the similarities and differences in American/British politics. Was fun. He's as pissed about their government as we are about ours. We apologized for Romney, by the way, which brought a good guffaw.

We got into an interesting discussion; he apologized for joining us in all our damned wars, and that led to the interesting concept of how in the past, Britain roped their commonwealths of Australia, Canada, etc., including India and others, into their wars of empire, while we use MONEY to rope countries into joining ours. Was interesting, and instructive. He chose, by the way, a sign protesting the recent move to let Shell drill in the arctic.

As to Mitt, shit, what can I say? Bear in mind, we elected Bush...TWICE! And just out of curiosity; does anyone take us seriously anyway??

As I said to our Brit friend yesterday; please accept our apologies for Mitt...and not just for his idiotic comments the other day, but for his mere existence. I wouldn't expect ANYONE to take us seriously if we're so stupid as to elect him!

And hey, you got him back pretty good with the one about holding an Olympics "in the middle of nowhere"! I'm glad the games are going well, personally I never had any question.

Keeping order in every verse

Hi Niki. I've been lurking but not contributing much. You should know that a lot of my comments, although they have mostly serious input, are slightly tounge in cheek. I don't associate all Americans as having the same mental capacity as Mr Romney, but a presidential candidate REALLY should have more common sense. Let's face it, The Olympic Games are possibly the biggest logistical and organisational task that any city can take on, sporting or otherwise, and I defy anybody to get through it without some hitch along the way. We were let down by our biggest private security company G4S, but we have a contingency plan in place, and security is fine and tight. I think the British Army can handle security checking with consummate ease???
And i seem to have a problem with paragraphing. No matter how hard I try, it all seems to come out in one long scroll.don't know what I'm doing wrong. Nice to hear from you, anyway, Niki.x

Correction, Niki: Teleprompter DIDN'T help at the NAACP. He was using one when he made that speech!

And PK might be able to help me out here...

How much snickering have y'all had at his comments about looking out the "backside" of 10 Downing Street?

Including Mitt Romney, it seems - or at least his head, since he talked about "looking out the backside" of Downing Street.

It was just another gaffe in a long line of them.

But buck up - now he's off to Poland. I'm sure he'll show some "solidarity" with the Polish people by offering some Polack jokes.

On the bright side, though, the people of Poland finally have a chance to joke about us for a change.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

PK, darling, it IS your "tongue in cheek" that I particularly love--and miss when it's not around. You're one of only two or three people (Anthony included) who do it so well...in Anthony's case I think he does it "better" in that sometimes you can't tell if he IS being serious or not, whereas with your cracks, I can easily discern the satire (tho' from what I've seen, some others can't!), and it just has me grinning from ear to ear every time.

So I dunno who's better; is it "better" to be carefully obscure so people can't tell if you're being snide, or "better" to be more obviously snide in a humorous manner? I can't say, I just love 'em both...there's so much of people taking themselves SO seriously here, it's always refreshing!

Uh, Mike, that was my point...I'm guessing the teleprompter told him exactly what to say to achieve his end, which he did. In essence, the point being "Black people don't like me; one more reason to vote for me!"

"Mitt happens",

Given that they soaked up the incompetent remnants of both Wackenhut and the fekkin Pinkertons, I ain't exactly surprised.
Mind you, they were told they were drinkin poison kool-aid at the time, but didn't wanna hear it.

Group4 is pretty much a sad little joke these days, good at security theatre and not much else.

Oh... Wackenhut was an american security company, originally noteable for its large size and near complete incompetence, they didn't really vet or train their personnel, and handled most jobs just by throwing warm bodies at them, see ?

They figured they'd make profit on scale, by holding more contracts than they lost simply because at the time private security had a long rep for not being very competent and most of those who could compete did not have sufficient staffing levels to try - Wackenhut went after large contracts as a rule.

Then they got into the private prisons industry, and this led to scandal after scandal, topped off by them pulling some industrial espionage/sabotage on the sites/companies they were supposed to be protecting - they underbid us and swiped the Nabisco contract out from under us when I was workin for Eagle/A-1 Services, and almost immediately pulled something of that nature to the point where Nabisco sued the shit out of them over it.

The big one though, was some time prior to 9-11 most airport security was done by Wackenhut, and their reputation for incompetence and corruption became SO bad that they were finally dumped, leading to a chain-reaction financial failure, and their name was already ruined by scandals, private prison abuses, and playing footsie with the dark side of the alphabet agencies.

So in 2002 they went begging, hat in hand to G4 Falck, which absorbed them, finally merging into G4S some time in 2004.

Most of my beef with them is professional, but I retain a certain level of personal beef with them over them also being for a while the strongarm of the rightwing cabal operating out of Holland, MI - which includes such noteables as Dick DeVos and Erik Prince (guy who runs Blackwater), something exposed when some of em decided to rape and murder Janet Chandler back in 1979.

They are scum, always have been, and it seems they always will be - and anyone fool enough to hire them deserves what they get.

I won't even get into the sordid history of the Pinkertons, but they were later absorbed by both Securitas AB and G4S, with Securitas taking most of the infrastructure, but refusing to employ the scum they had on staff, which mostly signed on with G4S.

This is kind of a touchy point with me, cause Security has nearly always been my official business of record and source of income.
