The only way they'll get my phaser is by lifting it through the molecules of my cold, disintegrated hand...

I keep my phaser ready for home defense. I have just the one powerpack. But that alien that just wreaked havoc on the new dilithium distribution facility had 25 powerpacks! The Federation officers stunned the building in time to keep it from getting grim, but why doesn't someone buying additional powerpacks (like, enough to take out a CITY-!!) cause any central computer attention? Now folks are saying no one should have a phaser! Okay, an assault phaser is way more than you need for home defense, but a regular old Type-2?
I'm a member of the Neutrino Rifle Association, and I VOTE!! You wanna take my phaser? Go ahead, make my millennium.

Hmmmm, no angry, rabid pro-phaser, anti-phaser arguments have ensued... curious.

I think you need to ask Dr. Daystrom to return some of your missing brain engrams. M-5.5 can wait.

LOL, it's just that some of the most vicious arguments here have involved gun control- I wanted to see if peeps could be more civilized (or not) if I removed it one step from reality.
Eh, just an experiment...

That's what has made you an interesting poster all these years; that and your occasional ability to put honesty and humor ahead of boring and predictably nasty political rhetoric. The Metrons might say you have potential.

Then again, you generally get a price break when you buy powerpacks in volume. Must also consider that if you recharge your own powerpacks, it's usually more efficient to have lots on hand and do large numbers at a time. Not to mention that if you're involved in phaser competition, you need to be ready to fire several hundred full power charges in a weekend, often with no on-site recharging available.

Besides, when anyone with basic hyperphysics knowledge can make a corbomite device with readily available resources, maybe a phaser is the lesser of two evils.

But one powerpack, fully charged, is good for more than one competition, even over a Saurian weekend. The only reason to have more is that you might be contemplating Klingon hunting...

News flash: corbomite is like Admiral AUraptor's idea of galactic peace through attrition- a fantasy.

That's nice of you, Commodore Jongstraw, but it doesn't make much sense to me either.

The second hundred amendment to the Federation Constitution was never meant for Stellar Converters, or Genesis Devices, you have to read it in the context of the times it was written in!!!!

A common misconception. It's well established that phaser accuracy and reliability decrease exponentially when the powerpack is more than 20% discharged. Note the numerous events of inaccurate fire and weapon failure in Star Fleet issue weapons.

Sorry. "Corbomite Device" is local system slang for any field expedient explosive, quadroammonite fertilizer and #3 Diesel, for example.

Ooops, that's an intergalactic rumour started by the planet that produces the Klingon disruptor. Seeing as you seem to believe it, that makes you either a Herbert or a Denebian Slime Devil, so which is it, Geeze?

There's an old Orthadox Klingon proverb that says that herring and gefilte fish are dishes best served cold. It is very cold in Donna Chang's South Brooklyn walk-up.

Not surprising as I recall she comes from an ice world.
Nice way to dodge the question, BTW! Errr, I mean NOT comment on the topic... whatever... Herbert!

Sorry Jong, that 'Herbert" was out of line... these phaser threads always bring out the worst in me, I'm afraid.

Nope. Just 40 years of both bullseye and practical phaser competition. And it's no rumor. Tests have shown the degradation in accuracy, as well as vids of various Starfleet officers and crewmen unable to hit the broad side of a docking bay - from the inside.

Also forgot to mention that under IFPPA (Intergalactic Federation of Practical Phaser Associations) rules, reloads of powerpacks are commonly required, usually after 20 blasts. Even in classic shooting stages, such as the Klingon Cataclysm, up to 200 blasts are fired by the best competitors. Cardassian Chaos Conflagration, introduced in last year's Vulcan Regionals, usually requires 20 powerpacks, a bat'leth, and two photon torpedos - also a very large range.

Wow, I stand corrected, sir!
So what is your stance on assault phaser ownership by Federation citizens then?

Very few citizens actually own assault phasers, and those sapients have been through thorough background checks and have posted bond.

Semi-automatic phasers, regardless of appearance, are all functionally the same, firing one blast per trigger pull, and anyone who passes a background check should be able to own one.

First of all...the Genesis Device is NOT a weapon. However, being funded and developed in a govt lab, it does violate the seperation between church and state.

As for Stellar Converters...the First Law of the Varda is to use greater strength against itself. The Varda also says we can take life to save a life.
