White House calls Libya assault "terrorist attack"

(CBS News) The White House called last week's deadly assault on a U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, "a terrorist attack" Thursday, but didn't clarify whether the Obama administration thought the attack was planned in advance.

"It is, I think, self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Air Force One Thursday. "Our embassy was attacked violently and the result was four deaths of American officials. So, again, that's self evident."

The White House's latest comments on the attack come as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton formed an "accountability review board" to investigate the brutal assault that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens. Clinton named former U.S. Ambassador Thomas Pickering to chair the panel, the Reuters news agency reports.

The new investigation comes amid calls from Capitol Hill for more information on the attack, and complaints that the Obama administration has not been forthright.

Carney didn't clarify whether the Obama administration thought the attack was planned in advance, Reuters reports. A top U.S. counterterrorism official reportedly told lawmakers on Capitol Hill Wednesday that the assault was "opportunistic" but also a "terrorist attack."

Looks like it was the administration who shot first, and aimed second.

And just like clockwork, here's Kwickie, taking the knee jerk opposing view, no matter what I say.

Yes, they literally said it never was an attack.

Dumbass.

It was just a mob reaction to video, remember ? That's ALL it was. Sudden, spontaneous. Even after the Libyan President said otherwise, that it was a preplanned coordinated attack, Jay, Hillary and the gang were still touting, in lock step fashion, the admin's story.

Rut roh...

CBS reports this morning that witnesses are saying “that there was never an anti-American protest outside of the consulate [in Benghazi, Libya]. Instead, they say, it came under planned attack. That is in direct contradiction to the administration’s account of the incident.”
“What’s clear,” the CBS reporter concludes, “is that the public won’t get a detailed account of what happened until after the election.”

Well, they did say a few days ago that "Our current best assessment, based on the information that we have at present, is that, in fact, what this began as, it was a spontaneous."

So, of course, in Rappyland, this is them saying it "absolutely was, no argument, spontaneous, now shut up while we appologize to the terrists" or something.

Of course, mention non-existant WMD, and his story about current info gets all different. Then, what Bush believed real deep-like is all that matters, and all other facts are irrelevant.

Its his way.

So did the administration ever directly claim that this was not a terrorist attack?

Sure, they thought it started as a demonstration, a protest, but that changed as facts came in, right?

Are you just mad that they didn't come out the second it happened and scream "TERRORIST ATTACK! TERRORIST ATTACK!"?

This White House is blatantly lied, time and time again. It's lied about the video being the cause of the riots, murders in Libya, when it knew DAMN WELL those attacks were planned, coordinated and anything but spontaneous.

Quote:

Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued a statement Friday that laid out how officials came to understand the assault that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. At the same time, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations issued a statement explaining her early descriptions of the attack.

In the days immediately after the attack, the administration said it believed it was a spontaneous reaction to an anti-Islamic video that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad and ignited mob protests on U.S. embassies around the Middle East and in North Africa.

Now, the administration has begun to call it a terrorist attack carried out by al-Qaida-linked militants and explain that it was a planned attack distinct from the mob protests in the region.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/us-officials-explain-libya-attack-i
ntelligence-17351601#.UGYr2ZjR6So

If the govt wasn't sure, then why in the HELL did it push this 100% phony story of the attacks being 'spontaneous' and having to do with a video no one had even seen before ???

Obama even referenced the damn thing 6 times in his UN speech, giving it almost 5 full minutes of attention, while only talking for less than 2 minutes on Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Lie after lie after lie.... and on the most crucial of issues too, national defense and the security of sovereign US property.

This wasn't about someone's " private, personal sex life ", but ended up costing 4 Americans their lives.

WHY??

U.S. Officials Knew Libya Attacks Were Work of Al Qaeda Affiliates

by Eli Lake Sep 26, 2012 4:45 AM EDT

Sources say intelligence agencies knew within a day that al Qaeda affiliates were behind the attacks in Benghazi, Libya—they even knew where one of the attackers lived. Eli Lake reports.

Within 24 hours of the 9-11 anniversary attack on the United States consulate in Benghazi, U.S. intelligence agencies had strong indications al Qaeda–affiliated operatives were behind the attack, and had even pinpointed the location of one of those attackers. Three separate U.S. intelligence officials who spoke to The Daily Beast said the early information was enough to show that the attack was planned and the work of al Qaeda affiliates operating in Eastern Libya.

Incompetence.

Obama didn't want a Muslim attack on US interest and dead Americans on 9/11 to negatively affect his re-election.

An attack they were specifically warned about. On 9/11. In the middle East, and in a country that was coming out of a violent revolution. Ambassador Stevens was left w/ barely any security, and then his " safe house " was nothing more than a unguarded residence , which might as well had a bull's eye painted on the front door.

Kwickie, you're just childishly making shit up, simply to counter anything I say, and because you literally don't have anything but your blind love for this administration.

Libyan officials said from the start they knew it wasn't 'spontaneous', and was the result of a planned attack.

The Obama administration first said this was JUST about a video, nothing else, and that everyone loves us , all over the middle East.

NOW, when there's no way to spin it any more, they've had to come out and change their tune.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I was confused by this thread, since i heard almost immediately after it happened that people were thinking it might have been a military strike--in fact, I think I POSTED just that. I never recalled the administration saying it WASN'T, so...

Oh, wait a minute, Rap only gets his "facts" from FauxNews and talk radio, THAT must be why he never heard about it. Okay, now I get it.

Funny, isn't it? Romney releases a premature claim that Obama "apologized", which was totally false (tho' I think he's still claiming it was accurate, isn't he?), while the administration waits responsibly to find out the facts before declaring it was a military operation, and Rap and his friends think they "told us otherwise". I guess that's what happens when you get all your "news" from the right.

Oh, gee; turns out it was the Intelligence office:
Quote:

Extremists from groups linked to al Qaida struck the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in a “deliberate and organized terrorist attack,” the top U.S. intelligence agency said Friday.

The statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence appeared to have the goal of updating the public on the latest findings of the investigation into the assault. “In the immediate aftermath (of the assault), there was information that led us to assess that the attack began spontaneously following protests earlier that day at our embassy in Cairo,” spokesman Sean Turner said in the statement. “We provided that initial assessment to executive branch officials and members of Congress."

In his statement, Turner said that U.S. intelligence agencies’ understanding of what happened in Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city, has evolved as they’ve collected and analyzed information on the incident. “As we learned more about the attack, we revised our initial assessment to reflect new information indicating that it was a deliberate and organized terrorist attack carried out by extremists,” he said.

The statement did not quiet the political backlash.

Shortly after it was issued, Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., called for the resignation of Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, who was the first to detail the initial account that the attack was spontaneous during appearances on Sunday morning television talk shows.

Rice’s spokeswoman, Erin Pelton, responded by noting that Rice’s comments “were prefaced at every turn with a clear statement that an FBI investigation was underway” and that she was providing “the best information . . . that the administration had at the time . . . provided by the U.S. intelligence community.”

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, came to Rice's defense, saying that he was "deeply disturbed by efforts to find the politics instead of finding the facts in this debate. Everyone who cares about the four fallen Americans in Benghazi would do well to take a deep breath about what happened." http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2012/09/28/170078/intelligence-office-says-
it-got.html

Nah, where's the fun in that? Republicans would far rather blame Obama for...anything! And Rap LOVES to spin, so let him have his fun.

On the other hand, I agree with Chris: "I'm honestly so sick of your stupid ignorant bullshit". Rap will insist until the day he died that Bush never got any warnings, despite ALL the facts and coverage to the opposite, so we'll just have to let him have his fantasy. It, like all his other fantasies, makes him feel all warm and snugly and safe...and self-righteous.

Besides, they've got to grasp onto SOMETHING to avoid thinking about how Romney's probably gonna be trounced!

Niki - the administration waited almost 2 weeks until it finally admitted this was a predetermined, choreographed, planned attacked. I don't know what the FUCK you're talking about, with this complete and total bullshit about the administration selling his as being anything else other than " just about a video " .

Obama is at fault for a whole list of things here. From not giving ambassador Stevens enough security, to not admitting his own total incompetence in preparing the embassy / consulate for attacks on the anniversary of 9/11, to flat out lying to the American public, and the world, when he yammered on for 5 minutes about that god damn video instead of dealing w/ the gorram facts.

It's not spin. This President SUCKS, flat out, for all his incompetence. And Americans died for it.

US Intelligence Takes Blame for Obama Administration's 'Contentious Remarks' on Libya Consulate attack
30/09/2012 13:52:00

A top intelligence official in the United States appeared to take the blame for the Obama administration's changed narrative on the US Consulate attack in Libya, saying that the administration officials who initially claimed the attack was spontaneous, did so on the guidance of intelligence officials.

The statement by Shawn Turner, spokesman for Director of National Intelligence James Clapper was released after the Obama administration experienced a tumultuous week post the attack in the Libyan city of Benghazi.

Fox News quoted Turner, as saying: "In the immediate aftermath, there was information that led us to assess that the attack began spontaneously following protests earlier that day at our embassy in Cairo.

"We provided that initial assessment to Executive Branch officials and members of Congress, who used that information to discuss the attack publicly and provide updates as they became available. Throughout our investigation we continued to emphasize that information gathered was preliminary and evolving," he added.

Earlier, following the attack, the White House had to steadily backpedal over its initial claims that the attack was inspired by protests in Cairo over an anti-Islam film and was not pre-planned.

"As we learned more about the attack, we revised our initial assessment to reflect new information indicating that it was a deliberate and organised terrorist attack carried out by extremists," Turner said.

You're actually comparing a storm, an act of nature, to a terrorist attack and murder of a US ambassador ? Really?

You think that Bush could have turned back Katrina, like Fidel allegedly did , by raising up his hand and demanding the hurricane not hit land ?

Your delusion is... beyond all description.

Soooo... After several more posts and responses here from Rappy, still no cites, no links, no evidence for his claims.

I'll ask again:

Please show me the President claiming that this was JUST about a video, and nothing else, and that everyone else loves us, all over the middle east.

Also, some evidence from Libyan officials stating that they KNEW from the start that this wasn't spontaneous.

"It remains unclear if any group or person exercised overall command and control of the attack, and if extremist group leaders directed their members to participate. However, we do assess that some of those involved were linked to groups affiliated with or sympathetic to Al Qaeda," he added.

Huh? In order to believe that "Obama is this guy's sock puppet", we'd have to have some evidence of Obama saying the things you claim he said. Or saying the things that this guy said. You still have yet to provide those quotes, links, or cites.

Are you trying to say that Bush was George Tenet's sockpuppet? You've made the claim before that Bush didn't "lie" because he only reported what Tenet and the U.S. intel apparatus provided him. Are you saying now that he was indeed a sockpuppet, incompetent, and a liar?

Or do you only hold Democratic presidents to that standard?

Okay, they won't answer or provide any quotes, so I guess it's up to me to do so...

"No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done." - President Barack Obama, September 12, 2012

That was the day after the attack.

So after weeks of telling us that Obama never said this was an act of terror, here he is, doing so, the very day after the attack.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Yup; Obama did not state UNEQUIVOCALLY AND WITHOUT QUESTION that it was a planned and executed military action at that time, his administration waited until all the facts were in to make that statement, but the above is precisely what he said, and should put an end to the argument.

As to what the NEWS was saying, that's not Obama, that's not his administration, that's the media deciding what to report and where to put the weight on the issue. It has no relevance to what the administration said.

Nonetheless, there was confusion and leaps to conclusions, by the administration (NOT Obama; what he said was, as far as I know, ALL he said at the time), the media and individuals. Just as at first 9/11 was reported as a single aircraft flying into a building, not a terrorist attack.

As to Katrina, etc., the title and the discussion have been about RESPONSES to events, nobody has (I believe) said a thing about "hand of God" events being prevented...tho' it's been PROVEN and facts have shown that Bush ignored the threat of 9/11 in ways that might have prevented it, and the Obama administration didn't shore up its embassies/consulates/etc. against something of which there were warnings.

Ergo, going on the title of the thread, Obama DID speak of a terrorist incident right off the bat, there WAS initial confusion in the media and the message, and that's the end of that. All the rest is fluff and bluster.

And on a less humorous note...

Quote:

House committee: security requests denied in Libya

Despite two explosions and dozens of other security threats, U.S. officials in Washington turned down repeated pleas from American diplomats in Libya to increase security at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi where the U.S. ambassador was killed, leaders of a House committee asserted Tuesday.

In a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Chairman Darrell Issa and Rep. Jason Chaffetz of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee said their information came from "individuals with direct knowledge of events in Libya."

Issa, R-Calif. and Chaffetz, R-Utah said the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans was the latest in a long line of attacks on Western diplomats and officials in Libya in the months before Sept. 11.

The letter listed 13 incidents, but Chaffetz said in an interview there were more than 50. Two of them involved explosive devices: a June 6 blast that blew a hole in the security perimeter. The explosion was described to the committee as "big enough for forty men to go through"; and an April 6 incident where two Libyans who were fired by a security contactor threw a small explosive device over the consulate fence.

"A number of people felt helpless in pushing back" against the decision not to increase security and "were pleading with them to reconsider," Chaffetz said. He added that frustrated whistleblowers were so upset with the decision that they were anxious to speak with the committee.

America loves a winner!

In the days leading up to the attack, ambassador Stevens notified the State Department that he feared there was a growing al Queda presence in Libya and even feared for his life. He believed that they were making him a target. Yet he was moved from the heavily-secure embassy in Tripoli to the unsecured compound in Benghazi, where he was a sitting duck for militants. To this day, the FBI has not been to the compound to investigate the assassination of Ambassador Stevens, Smith, Doherty, and Woods. We have been told that it's too dangerous for them to go there. The FBI has yet to set foot in Benghazi. We have been told that it is too dangerous for them to go there. But we know that's a bold-face lie. In just 3 days after the attack, CNN reporters had no problem sorting thru the rubble that is now the US consulate. In fact, they found a hard cover journal containing 7 pages of hand-written notes by Ambassador Stevens (documenting his anxiety and suspicions). The journal revealed that he was aware of, and worried about, "the never-ending security threats" that he was facing in Benghazi, and specifically about "the rise in Islamic extremism" and "growing Al Qaeda presence in Libya," and "being on an Al Qaeda hit list."

One has to wonder why the State Department didn't do more to protect Ambassador Stevens and other U.S. personnel. ( Perhaps it was a good thing that CNN found that journal before the government got its hands on it; otherwise, we would never have learned that Stevens feared for his safety and his life and the State Department had been aware of that.)

I guess there really is no lengths that you'll not go to in order to defend this admin's utter and complete incompetency. Even after the murder of a US ambassador, and 3 Americans, on 9/11, after there were specific threats to the safety and well being of said ambassador.

I fail to see the point of even trying to have a conversation w/ you.
