LADY LIBERTY

I wonder what she thought
As she stood there, strong and tall.
She couldn't turn away,
She was forced to watch it all.

Did she long to offer comfort
As her country bled?
With her arm forever frozen
High above her head.

She could not shield her eyes
She could not hide her face
She just stared across the water
Keeping Freedom's place.

The smell of smoke and terror
Somehow reduced her size
So small within the harbor
But still we recognized...

How dignified and beautiful
On a day so many died
I wonder what she thought,
And I know she must have cried.

i DO aim to misbehave

Just a few thoughts.

I remember a sparkling bright September day in Minneapolis. The kind that made you think everything was all right with the world.

After watching screaming headlines coming over the NASDAQ web site from the research editors, we were evacuated from the Piper Jaffray tower by ten that morning. I remember staring up at the IDS building--which vaguely resembles the Twin Towers--irrationally thinking, "Is it tall enough for someone to notice?"

I ran a few errands on the way home, and saw my own shock reflected in the stunned faces of the sales people. It was still a sparkling bright day, but now eerily quiet.

The one image that stands out, the one I can't forget, is a video clip of a crowd of men in NYFD gear running toward the towers when everyone else was trying to run out.

On the Sunday before the attack, my niece commented that there wasn't an event significant enough that she could say, "I remember where I was when." Her grandparents had Pearl Harbor, and her parents had JFK. I remembered the Challenger explosion. Now she and I can talk together about the Twin Towers.

That seem right to you?

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

I wonder what the Lady thought
As the time rolled on.
Strength and grace had blown away,
Fear and hate were strong.

Freedom, such a fragile thing,
Covered by the dust,
Covered by the lies and laws of
Rulers asking for our trust.

Did she cry on silent nights
For those gone in vain?
Or for those who were left behind
With leaders preying on their pain?

Can it heal, this country?
Can we then grow strong?
Questions to still be answered,
As the Lady watches on.

Rue

Thank you Rue, for turning a thread that was intended as a tribute and memorial for those who died, into just another pathetic political thread! It's a shame that instead of remembering our fallen heroes, some choose to use this time to preach who they believe are the villians.

While Bush and Kerry continue to divide this country, the terrorists are laughing. Reminds me of an old Twlight Zone episode, "We don't have to destroy them, they are doing it to themselves!"

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

Strangely enough, the fact that Rue can freely express her political opinions in public forums, without having to worry about being dragged off by the secret police one night, never to be seen again, is a memorial to those who died, and to those who authored and protect our freedoms.

THEGREYJEDI

I remember wishing that I could go to class and learn that day. But they cancelled classes. I remember going to see my girlfriend for lunch at her school (She was 17, I was 19) and everyone was terrified.

I remember being annoyed at the stupidity of the public. People living in rural North Carolina, at least an hour from any major financial or urban area going home from school or work in fear.

I remember being outraged at our own citizens lashing out at innocent muslims who had nothing to do with the attacks. I remember wishing death on the flag burning muslims laughing at our tragedy.

I remember feeling nothing as the second plane hit the towers. I remember sitting there watching the towers fall with the same boredom and disinterest as I do when watching the news any other day. This wasn't shock, this was a lack of feeling. Death has never bothered me, nor tragedy.

I remember, but what I remember, no one else seems to recall.

I don't think Rue's post was inappropriate, but anything I would want to add to this thread would not be welcome.

I just thought we could avoid the political rants for one day, and remember those that were lost. For just one day, I thought that was the appropriate thing to do. Remember!

I appreciate the motive, which is why I didn't add my usual $0.02. My thoughts are with the families- this is a sad time for them.
