Yeah, I've put up entirely partisan political posts to this point...I'm pissed about the debate. A debate is supposed to be an honest exploration of two divergent viewpoints, not a lie-fest. But I'll stop now, and offer this as my parting shot. Sorry it's not cute or positive, I'm feeling neither right now. At least you can enjoy the pretty pictures.

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven natural wonders of the world, home to an incredible diversity of sea life. It's the largest coral reef in the world, covering more than 345,000 square kilometers.

But lately, the reef is losing more and more of its living outer layer. That's according to recent research in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Looking back to 1985, scientists found that the number of living polyps has declined from more than 25 percent of the reef's surface to just under 14 percent. Most of that loss has come in the last decade or so in areas where humans live closest to the reef.

The problem is the number of challenges facing the reef. There's coral bleaching due to the hot temperatures induced by human-caused climate change. There's our sewage and agricultural run-off flowing into the sea. There are even outbreaks of coral-chomping starfish, aided and abetted by human activity.

Not all is lost. The relatively pristine northern end of the reef shows that coral could recover, given the chance. For that to happen, we all will have to do more to combat climate change. http://www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/episode.cfm?id=how-the-great

Why is this important? Here's why:

"In the oceans, new species and genera tend to originate in the tropics and in the shallows near shore," says paleobiologist Carl Simpson of Humboldt University in Berlin, one of the researchers on the new paper. By using a massive collection of data on fossils from mollusks to South American mammals, which records where a fossil was found, how often it is found and what accompanied it, Simpson and his colleagues find "that a majority of genera first evolve in reefs and then later expand to other habitats."

In fact, of the 6,615 seabed invertebrates surveyed in the so-called Paleobiology Database, 1,426 evolved in a reef ecosystem. And the result is not just an artifact of reef and shallow-water fossils being relatively more studied. "Reefs are actually rare compared to other habitats," Simpson notes. "If anything, there is a bias against finding that reefs are cradles."

The phemonenon of reefs acting as cradles of biodiversity seems to have peaked in the Paleozoic—from 542 million to 251 million years ago—for reasons that are unclear. One possibility is that by seeding other environments with new species, reefs undercut their own preeminence as cradles. "The consequence would be that reefs become one of many important cradles, rather than the most common cradle," Simpson says.

And reefs do not seem to have helped the oceans rebound from mass extinction events, like the one at the end of the Paleozoic era that wiped out as much as 90 percent of marine life. That's likely because "reef-building as a process had to recover from mass extinction events, because the ecosystem engineers that built reefs were severely affected," says marine scientist Richard Aronson of the Florida Institute of Technology, who was not involved with the study. "Reefs in general were not available to enhance biodiversity rebound because they first had to be reconstituted as viable ecosystems."

But coral reefs do offer a variety of ecological niches and "bumpiness," as Aronson puts it, or a "great variety of physical spaces, [water] flow regimes and other ecological opportunities." That has made them cradles not just for sponges and the like but also snails, shrimps, urchins, fishes and even extinct animals like trilobites.

Plus, vicious competition for space and food on a reef leads to a lot of "turnover," Simpson notes, or extinctions that allow for new species to develop as new habitats form or ecological niches open. "If turnover is high, then the brief window of opportunity for new species is a common occurrence."

According to some mathematical estimates, 99.9 percent of all species that have ever existed are now extinct. As it stands, estimates of the number of species on Earth at present range from five million to as many as 100 million, with science having identified only two million members of the biodiversity extant today. That means literally billions of species have come and gone in the 4.5 billion years Earth has existed.

New research will be needed to determine exactly why reefs are such efficient cradles for new life-forms. But the threats faced by coral today—from rising ocean acidity to agricultural runoff and rampant disease—do not bode well for marine biodiversity in the near future. After all, it is possible that during mass extinction events the destruction of reefs might have played a role in the decline of diversity in other marine environments, as well. Yeah, it really is tragic. I visited there for the first time in July this year, because I know it won't be around for long. So many tourists, I know that they try and restrict the damage from tourism, but it still must impact.

Still its a beautiful part of the world.I can't show you any really good photos, as the weather was overcast, the sea a bit choppy and the colours not as vivid as I would have liked. Also I do not know how to post photos from my computer onto this site.

coral, phylum cnidaria is a tiny betentacled organism that grows in colonies and cements itself to a surface then develops a hard shell for protection. But the colonies involve more than just coral; the coral rely on tiny symbiotic bacteria to survive. But under stress, such as high temperatures or pollution, the coral expel the bacteria and often die.

For a moment I thought the article was suggesting that the calcium carbonate coral skeletons were being dissolved. That would be similar to an event at the P-T boundary where many calcium-carbonate dependent species went extinct.

So ... to protect the reef, people would have to clean up the ocean at the
reef and for 100's of miles out to sea?

And we can't. Making dirty is easy. Cleaning up is hard?
There would have to be an automatic, continuous cleaning system going on.

That's about it Oonj, as with so many things. If we wanted to clean up our act, we'd have to fix things that happen a long ways away from what they're destroying, which of course is incomprehensible to humans, with their short sightedness and NIMBY attitudes.

Yeah, like THAT's going to happen!

Breaks my heart that we're losing the reef, and it's one thing that's pretty much pre-destined to be lost. Too fragile an ecosystem. I'm glad I'm no younger than I am; we've already lost so much, and so much more will disappear just during my lifetime, I don't want to see more.
