A123 Systems Inc., a Waltham-based maker of lithium-ion batteries, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in federal court in Delaware Tuesday morning, saying in court filings that it has agreed to sell such automotive business assets as its facilities in Michigan.

In a recent regulatory filing, the company said that a default on some of its debt is likely, and it warned that it might be heading for bankruptcy protection.

A123 declined comment beyond a press release that said it had entered an asset purchase agreement with Johnson Controls Inc. In a transaction valued at $125 million, Johnson Controls plans to acquire A123’s automotive business assets, including its facilities in Livonia and Romulus, Mich.

A123 bet heavily that its batteries would be ideal for helping to power electric and hybrid vehicles, but the company has struggled in the last year, with layoffs and a recall of some of its batteries.

Recently, A123 looked as if it might be rescued by an investment of up to $450 million by Chinese auto-parts maker Wanxiang Group. Wanxiang could not immediately be reached.

In a press release Tuesday, A123 chief executive David Vieau said: “We determined not to move forward with the previously announced Wanxiang agreement as a result of unanticipated and significant challenges to its completion. Since disclosing the Wanxiang agreement, we have simultaneously been evaluating contingencies, and we are pleased that Johnson Controls recognizes the inherent value of our automotive technology and automotive business assets.”

In 2009, A123 held an initial public stock offering, raising about $380 million with its initial stock offering.

Also in 2009, A123 received a $249.1 million grant from the US Department of Energy to build battery manufacturing operations in Michigan.

Oooo, goodie goodie for Rap. He's found something to put up that no doubt makes him just DROOL with self-righteousness. Enjoy, Rap.

Nobody tell him that every administration screws up, even (gasp!) REPUBLICAN ones. That would take all the fun out of it.

Just another in the long line of indications , Niki, that this President and this admin have absolutely no clue of what they're doing.

Some of us are paying attention. You ? Clearly aren't among that group.

Nah, I'm as aware as anyone else. I just see the whole picture, through history, I'm not obsessive about how "bad" this administration has been.

Rather than talk about one failed business, how about how the Bush administration failed the whole COUNTRY?
Quote:

Bush tax giveaways:

•didn’t create jobs (Job losses: 7,796,000 for GOP v. 41,000 for Obama)

•didn’t create growth

•put us into debt to give the wealthiest Americans a break at the expense of the middle class

BUSH POLICIES: NO GROWTH, NO JOBS, NO GAINS FOR MIDDLE CLASS

BUSH TAX GIVEAWAYS FOR THE RICH DID NOT CREATE ECONOMIC GROWTH; FROM 2001 TO 2007 ECONOMIC GROWTH AVERAGED 2.3 PERCENT ANNUALLY.

BUSH TAX CUTS DID NOT CREATE JOBS: FROM 2001-JUNE 2007 JOBS GREW AT 4.8 PERCENT COMPARED TO 16.2 PERCENT UNDER THE SAME TIME PERIOD UNDER CLINTON.

BUSH TAX CUTS DID NOT PRODUCE INCREASE IN REAL INCOME (1.6 PERCENT) COMPARED TO CLINTON POLICIES (14.7 PERCENT).

2001 AND 2003 BUSH TAX CUTS THE ‘SINGLE LARGEST CAUSE OF AMERICA’S STRUCTURAL DEFICIT.’

CONTINUING BUSH POLICIES, INCLUDING THE BUSH TAX CUTS, WOULD LEAD TO A NATIONAL DEBT 90 PERCENT OF GDP BY 2020.

2009-2019: BUSH POLICIES OF TAX CUTS AND WARS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN WILL ACCOUNT FOR ALMOST $7 TRILLION IN DEFICITS. Details at http://www.responsibletaxes.org/resources/killer-facts-on-failure-of-b
ush-economic-policies/
]
The material, by the way, was just copied and pasted; I'm not responsible for the all caps.

Or how about Clinton: There's the biggie,
Quote:

Clinton's proposal for massive reform of the health care system ended up a massive failure, reinforcing the Clinton administration's tendency to stick to the political middle ground.

A few of his other failures:
Quote:

--Fell flat on his face with handling terror attacks on America

--Failed to contain Saddam Hussein or stop his WMD production

--Bombed the Chinese embassy by mistake in Kosovo

--At least 86 major American corporate scandals grew on his watch unchecked

--Intelligence reform: failed to remove the wall of communication between agencies

--Law enforcement and immigration
--Waico TX blew up in his face
--Manhandled a Cuban child at gunpoint
--allowed millions of immigrants into the country unchecked
--2000 CIA study noted uptick in 11 major international criminal enterprises on his watch http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110510144104AAYBmlg

I'm sure others could list other failures.

All administrations fail at things. It's just your obsession on hating anything to do with the left that makes you myopic and totally incapable of perspective, that's all.

Was there ever a company that got funds, loans, or bailouts from the Bush or Reagan admins that later went belly-up?

A savings and loan, perhaps? A Kevin Costner movie shared the name, possibly?

Ring any bells?

Funny thing is this same company got a grant from the Bush administration to help with construction of a plant.

Rappy does not understand that the government gives out grant like this all the time. Most of the time you don't hear about it because the buisness does not fail.

Construction of a plant? Which plant ? And how is that relevant to this issue ?

Romney is dead on right here. Obama has tried to pick winners and losers in the Green energy industry, throwing good money after bad, for purely political reasons. And not just 'minor' favors, like we see done so often in politics, but $ which far exceeds the amount BIG OIL gets.

So, yet another Obama backed green energy company goes tits up. Hell, the Left will probably congratulate him for his failure. The fact that he CARES so much, is all that matters to his myrmidons. Screw about how wise it was, or that he's an incompetent dork, who doesn't understand how the real world works.

Or, if Bush does something, and it doesn't work, then it's perfectly fine for Barry to come in after, make a bad mistake much worse, and then he's covered, because someone else did it first ?

You've offered no cites. If you can't reply in an adult manner to a simple, basic question, then I'm done /w you.

Companies often have more than just 1 plant, and are involved with the making of more than just 1 product. And even IF Bush gave them money, so the frell what ? Obama still gave them 250 million, and they FAILED ! Bush has been out of office for 4 years not. STOP BLAMING HIM FOR OBAMA'S FUCK UP!

And you're a known liar as well, so what of your sig ?

The Bush administration gave the company grants, even touted it as part of the future of manufacturing. Members of the GOP agreed and supported the grant application.

List Of Failed Green Energy Jobs & Companies – By Obama

**Update: 7/19/12: The Amonix Solar: FAIL! – manufacturing plant in North Las Vegas, subsidized by more than $20 million in federal tax credits and grants given by Obama Administration, has closed its 214,000 square foot facility a year after it opened.
Solar Trust of America: FAIL! - Filed Bankruptcy in Oakland, CA, April 3, 2012

Bright Source: FAIL! - Bright Source warned Obama’s Energy Department officials in March 2011 that delays in approving a $1.6 billion U.S. loan guarantee would embarrass the White House and force the solar-energy company to close. Bright Source lost billions of dollars but is getting more money to keep trying. Can you say, “This isn’t working Mr. President?”

Solyndra: FAIL! - Obama gave $500,000,000 (that’s a HALF BILLION!) in taxpayer money to Solyndra who shut its doors and laid off 1100 workers in August 2011 after billions in losses due to failure to make a solar product that works! Barack Obama was not vetted before being elected President and neither was Solyndra before Mr. Obama threw that taxpayer money down the drain of unproven technology.

LSP Energy: FAIL! - LSPEnergy LP filed bankruptcy protection and a sale of its assets in Feb 2012

Energy Conversion Devices: FAIL! – On February 14, 2012 Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. and its subsidiaries filed for bankruptcy

Abound Solar: FAIL! - Abound Solar received a $400 million loan guarantee from Barack Obama then announced in June, 2012 that it would file for bankruptcy. Many of these failed corporations, such as Abound, donated MILLIONS and continue to donate to Barack Obama’s campaign. Can you say, “Democrat Slush Fund”? Yes this is illegal. But Democrats are being protected from being prosecuted, for now.

SunPower: FAIL! - SunPower stopped producing solar cells in 2011 at near bankruptcy then restructured with the help of, get this, oil giant TOTAL, Inc. who owns 60% stake in SunPower. Irony? The company is still struggling.

Beacon Power: FAIL! – Beacon Power Corp filed for bankruptcy protection in October, 2011 just a year after Obama approved a $43 million Government loan guarantee. They remain barely in business, still struggling to make energy that makes sense or that works at all.

Ecotality: FAIL! - ECOtality, a San Francisco green-tech company that never earned any money and remains on the verge of bankruptcy after receiving roughly $115 million in two loan guarantees from President Obama, who wants to do some more of this kind of Democrat Slush Fund Guarantees after he is elected to a 2nd term.

A123 Solar: FAIL! - A123 Solar received $279 million from taxpayers thanks to President Obama’s Department of Energy loan guarantees even after the Solyndra bankruptcy and is getting another $500M from Obama after a loss of $400M.

UniSolar: FAIL! - Uni-Solar filed for Ch 11 bankruptcy in June 20, 2012 after laying off hundreds of workers. UniSolar received even more Obama money after showing now progress, no profits and is still failing… yet they still remain in business with Obama’s help.

Azure Dynamics: FAIL! - Azure Dynamics filed for bankruptcy in June , 2012 wasting millions in Obama “Stimulus” money and received abatement on taxes owed and and several tax credits. Azure Dynamics LLC filed for bankruptcy protection in Canada and the US. Azure laid off 120 of its 160 employees in Oak Park; Boston; Vancouver, British Columbia; and the UK.

Evergreen Solar: FAIL! - Evergreen Solar received $527 Million in Taxpayer money from Obama and filed bankruptcy in late 2011. Evergreen, which closed its taxpayer-supported Devens factory in March, 2011 cut more than 1800 jobs. Evergreen’s $450 million factory, turned out to be a colossal “waste” of taxpayer money.

Ener1: FAIL! Ener1 Inc. received a $118 million U.S. Energy Department grant from President Obama to make electric-car batteries but filed for bankruptcy protection January 2012 after defaulting on bond debt.

** And note, this list doesn't include the most recent failings !

You're so fucking sad. Instead od addressing any points made you decide to copy and paste a list.

Before I get into specifics one major point is that these companys are failing during the worst economic recession since the great depression, brought on by a decade of conservative economic policies.

Solar Trust of America: FAIL! - Filed Bankruptcy in Oakland, CA, April 3, 2012

Amonix did not fail, it closed one plant. The company is still in operation in Califorina.

Yup, Bright Source is in such a dire situation that it stopped it's IPO because right now it does not need the money.

Yes, it failed. Not because it did not make a working product, but because it had bet on using CIGS based panels instead of conventional silicon based ones. It failed when the price of silicon dropped, meaning it's panels were more expencive.

LSP Energy filed after having massive problems with the combustion turbine at it's power plant. It should also be noted this is a conventional natural gas plant, not a more risky green energy plant.

The company is still in operation, like the majority of corporate bankruptcy they are using it as a tool to reduce their debte. Here the problem. The company applied, BUT DID NOT GET loans from the Energy department.

But Democrats are being protected from being prosecuted, for now.

Failed much the same way Solindra did. I want to see a citation on the "Democrat Slush Fund".

Struggling, but still on it's feet. So struggling is now failure?

So again still in business.

I don't think what ever hack wrote this list understands what fail means. I also don't think they understand that employees of a company donating to political parties is very different than the company donating.

As shown also awarded loans by the Bush administration and supported by members of the GOP.

Do you understand that the purpose of federal grants is to help support companies as they get started. Perhaps we should give grants only to companies that don't need them. You know that make sense...maybe for you.

Wasted? If it was able to pay it's employees and keep them working for some time, plus continue to operate through the backruptcy, which it has, it is not a waste.

Again not a waste, and the company as a whole is still in operation.

Overall this list is just like you, full of a lot of shit.

You also have the fact that many of these companys are struggling because China is pouring billions into supporting their own green energy companies which means their products are cheaper.

The only way to compete against that is for the government to put money into our companies. Even Reagan understood this. That is why he poured trillions into defence and basicly outspent and banckrupted the USSR.

I do not fear God, I fear the ignorance of man.
A warning to everyone, AURaptor is a known liar.

So you support the business model of reducing staff, getting rid of unprofitable parts of the business, and reducing costs in troubled companies?

No he didn't. He contradicted and contextualised an overreaching criticism of a company's 'failure'. He never said that the company closing plants was a good thing, or evidence of success, or anything like that.

So did AIG, but you won't ever hear Rappy whining about that, either...

But I was thinking of a li'l bank called "Silverado", if anyone wanted to look up its history and the idea of a Prez "picking winners and losers".

Somehow the VP's son managed to write over $100,000,000 in bad loans, and all he got for punishment was a $50,000 fine, which was paid for by political donors to his daddy's election campaign.

I'd say that was someone trying to "pick winners" in the S&L business, wouldn't you?

I think you missed the obvious point, which is really not unusual for you...

Point being, when Bush and his cronies were doing exactly this kind of thing - picking "winners and losers" in the financial markets and on Wall Street - you had absolutely zero problem with it, and didn't utter a peep. You said, in fact, "The economy's ON FIRE!" and pretended all was well.

So what happened between then and now?

Oh... we elected a Democrat, that's what.

I'd really love to know. If you have that piece of legislation handy, I think I can use it, because it is also apparently a magical time machine.

Get glasses, or a brain, or both. There are two dates - the date of initial FDIC declaration, and the date of final FDIC resolution.

Most recent bank failure on the list:

First Federal Bank of California, F.S.B. Santa Monica CA 28536 OneWest Bank, FSB
December 18, 2009 date of initial FDIC declaration
August 23, 2012 date of final FDIC resolution

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

The Presidency of Barack Obama began at noon EST on January 20, 2009.

First Federal Bank of California, F.S.B. Santa Monica CA 28536 OneWest Bank, FSB
December 18, 2009 date of initial FDIC declaration
August 23, 2012 date of final FDIC resolution

By January 20, 2009 the housing bubble had already imploded taking banks, insurance companies, mortgage lenders and other institutions down like collapsing dominoes, as the value of 'assets' dissolved like cotton candy.

WIKI

The United States housing bubble is an economic bubble affecting many parts of the United States housing market in over half of American states. Housing prices peaked in early 2006, started to decline in 2006 and 2007, and reached new lows in 2012.[1] On December 30, 2008 the Case-Shiller home price index reported its largest price drop in its history.[2]

Increased foreclosure rates in 2006–2007 among U.S. homeowners led to a crisis in August 2008 for the subprime, Alt-A, collateralized debt obligation (CDO), mortgage, credit, hedge fund, and foreign bank markets.[3] In October 2007, the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury called the bursting housing bubble "the most significant risk to our economy."[4]

END WIKI

Like a tsunami, the collapse created by sugar-daddy georgie continued on after he left office. But just in his time in office he took a government surplus and turned it into a deficit. Took a thriving economy and tuned it into a recession - then a depression. Took a 4.6% unemployment rate and turned it around - to 7.8% Doubled the national debt.

So, when you compare a very few 'failed' companies under Obama (and many didn't actually fail despite little rappy having them on a list) against sugar-daddy georgie's wrecking the US economy and the Federal budget - I'd have to give the prize to sugar-daddy georgie for a really big job well done.

So the Obama administration drove First Federal Bank of California to failure in just eleven months?

See how we play?

Your argument would be more compelling if you listed banks that had filed initial declarations only, as well as final declarations - since by including ONLY banks that have filed both you end up listing ONLY banks that filed the initial declaration more than three years ago. This cleverly leaves out most banks that would have started the process during the Obama administration.

But, wait. I can do that for you.

So you're on "the Left" now?

"I supported Bush in 2000 and 2004 and intellegence [sic] had very little to do with that decision." - Hero

No. Then again, neither did Kiki.

I'm noting that after two years of the Obama administration trying to fix the economy, banks are still failing at a pretty good clip.

Also noting that pretty much everyone but rabid Liberals knows that there were many causes of the sub-prime mortgage crisis, so trying to blame Bush alone is...well...pretty much a rerun of what Liberals have been doing for the past 3 years or more.
